Break Away From the System: Tracey Walker on Self-Enforced Discipline
You’ve never once been late clocking in when you knew a missed shift meant a missed paycheck. Coffee hot, computer on, sitting at your desk right on time, every time. Then you sit down to work your own business for the first time that week, and somehow it’s fine to push it to tomorrow. If that sounds uncomfortably familiar, you’re not lazy. You’ve just been trained, very effectively, to respect one system a lot more than you respect yourself.
Tracey Walker spends this session inside the Unstoppable Mastermind pulling that exact habit apart, and she doesn’t let anyone off easy, including herself. As someone who’s tried to build something on the side of a job, or after leaving one, you already know the tug of war she’s describing.
Why Do You Show Up for a Job That You’d Never Show Up for Yourself?
A job has a built-in consequence. Skip it, and two weeks later the check is short. That consequence is enforced by someone else, and Tracey’s point is that most people obey it instantly while treating their own business, the one thing that could actually make them free, as optional.
Now, the thing is that works in this business too, except for the fact it’s a secondary person that’s withholding the money from you, and that person you respect more than you respect yourself. That’s the problem we got.
Read that twice. The mechanism paying you in your own business is you. There’s no manager standing over your shoulder to dock your pay if you skip your two hours today, which means the only enforcement left is the one you supply yourself. If you’ve been waiting for your business to feel as urgent as a job, it never will, because nobody built in a consequence for you. You have to install it, and that’s an internal decision, not a scheduling trick.
What Is School Really Training You to Do Instead of Produce?
Tracey isn’t anti-education. She’s clear she has no issue with anyone who went to college. Her issue is with what the credential quietly teaches you to expect: that you get paid for demonstrating knowledge before you’ve produced a single result. A job offer works the same way, extended based on how you interviewed and how your resume read, not on results you’d already delivered.
As Tracey Walker puts it, “This is what school teaches us, to learn, not to do.” That single sentence explains why so many capable, credentialed people freeze the moment nobody is grading them anymore. The business you’re building here runs on the opposite rule. Nobody cares what you know until you’ve turned it into a result, and once you accept that, the whole question changes from whether you’re qualified enough yet to what you actually produced this week.
Why Does Making More Money Sometimes Feel Dangerous?
Tracey brings up a member of her team, Terrence, as a specific example of a block that has nothing to do with skill or strategy. As Tracey Walker describes it, “Terrence stops himself from making money because Terrence is living in the past in his mind” running the quiet story that if he ever had money before and lost it, having money again just repeats the pattern. So some part of him would rather not have it than risk that story replaying.
That’s the real challenge underneath a lot of stalled businesses, and it rarely announces itself. Nobody says out loud, I’m avoiding success because success previously ended badly for me. It shows up instead as a missed two hours here, a call not returned there, a launch that quietly never launches. The fix isn’t a better funnel. It’s noticing the pattern in yourself before it costs you another month.
- The paycheck consequence that keeps you disciplined at a job doesn’t exist automatically in your own business. You have to build it yourself.
- Getting paid for what you produce, not for what you know, is a different game than the one school prepared you to play.
- Self-sabotage often runs on an old story about what having money meant last time, not on anything wrong with your current strategy.
Tracey goes further in the full session, working through exactly how to install that self-enforced discipline day to day and what she watches for in her own team when someone’s results quietly stall. Now, here's another thing about the system. The system usually has some type of consequence or some type of, I don't want to say punishment, but it kind of is a punishment, right? So, for example, let's say that you don't go to work because you don't feel like it, right? Two weeks later, what's your punishment?
You don't get no money, okay? Now, the thing is that works in this business too, except for the fact it's a secondary person that's withholding the money from you, and that person you respect more than you respect yourself. That's the problem we got. This person tells you if you don't come to work, we're not going to pay you.
You're Johnny on the spot. You're right there. You're swiping in exactly 7 o'clock. You're sitting at your desk, computer on, coffee hot.
You're ready to go. But you tell yourself if you don't come to work, you ain't making no money, you say, oh, that's okay. I'll do it tomorrow. So you're giving your power away to somebody who don't even matter.
Why? Because you respect somebody else more than you respect yourself. That is what the system is doing. Do you understand what I'm saying?
That's what I don't like. I'm okay if people want to cause it what they want to do. I went to college. It's fine.
I don't have a problem with that. I just have a problem with people coming out, then giving their power all to this big brother, big sister over here, but then you start your own business, and you say, but I don't understand how I can't make any money. Easy. Work.
Do something. You can't. Watch videos and make money. I don't care how many videos we put out.
I want you to watch them, but if you don't go do what they say in them, you are a professional learner. This is what school teaches us, to learn, not to do. Bob Proctor says, unfortunately, we give degrees to people for what they know, not what they do. This is the mismatch that we're really fighting in this industry.
It's not because it's not possible. It's that the mindset needs, to shift from learning to doing. You get a job with a salary before you've done anything, don't you? You go to the interview, and they pay you based on what?
How you look on paper, and how that person felt about you in that interview. And they'll give you an acceptance letter, or whatever, right? Hey, we'll be willing to give you $50,000 a year based on what you know. You're used to knowing and not doing.
You get paid for not doing nothing. And we're saying, we don't have to pay you for that. I don't care if you know a lot or not. If you know one marketing strategy, you can make a million dollars and know one marketing strategy.
You don't gotta know as much as she know. It don't matter how much she know. It matters how much you do with what you do know. See, and that's what we gotta get people.
Okay, so now that you know what to do with the money, it should be easier for you to make it because like my boy Terrence, he has self-sabotage. Terrence stops himself from making money because Terrence is living in the past in his mind saying that, hey, I'm that same person that I was 20 years ago and if I make money, I'm gonna do the same things that that person 20 years ago did where I'm not gonna have any money so I'll do better not making any money. That is the logical process his brain is going through. So, now let's talk about a couple of little things.
