Free Twitter Marketing: The Follow Ratios and Rules That Keep an Account Growing

This lesson is part of Unstoppable Dream
The full recording is free with an account. One email gets you in.

You’ve got a phone, a following, and zero ad budget. That combination scares off most people before they even open the app, because the internet has convinced everyone that traffic costs money. Mike and Regina built their entire lead flow on Twitter without spending a dollar on it, and in this session Mike walks through exactly how, account by account, tweet by tweet.

As someone trying to build an audience from a laptop instead of a corporate desk, you already know the frustration of posting into silence, or worse, getting your account flagged for trying too hard. Mike’s approach is the opposite of hustle-for-the-sake-of-hustle. It’s a set of specific numbers and habits that keep an account healthy while it quietly compounds.

Why does going all out on Twitter usually backfire?

Mike opens with the limits most people never bother to learn. You can technically follow up to a thousand accounts a day and send up to a thousand direct messages, but he doesn’t recommend anywhere near that. His working numbers are 150 to 200 new follows a day and no more than 250 direct messages, scaled down further if your follow-back rate is lower than that. Push past what your account can handle and Twitter will flag you as a spammer, sometimes locking the account for a day or two, what he calls Twitter jail.

The same restraint applies to hashtags and content. Twitter itself recommends only two hashtags per post, and Mike mostly uses one or none. He also caps how many accounts get an identical tweet, running it out to a maximum of four of his travel accounts rather than blasting the same line across every profile he owns, because, in his words, “Twitter loves retweets more than they love duplicate content from one user”. Five to ten tweets a day, he says, is plenty to keep an account looking active without looking desperate.

There’s a ratio worth remembering too. Once an account passes 2,000 people followed, Twitter caps how many more it can follow to roughly ten percent above its follower count. Mike keeps his own accounts one thousand to fifteen hundred followers ahead of who he’s following, specifically so none of them ever bump into that ceiling.

What actually makes a Twitter profile pull people in?

Before any of the posting mechanics matter, the profile itself has to be congruent, meaning the header, the photo, the bio, and the link all point at the same story. Mike’s header reads that he travels the world teaching people to live the laptop lifestyle. His photos are from the road. His link and his handle both use the same phrase, so nothing about the account feels bolted together or repurposed from some other niche.

That congruence is the whole game, because the profile is doing the selling before a single direct message goes out. Mike and Regina aren’t running ads at strangers. They’re running what he calls attraction marketing, meaning the profile explains who they are and what they do without ever asking for anything, and people who resonate come find them instead. As Mike puts it, describing how he built his own bio, “it’s all about following it’s all about being followed”, which sounds almost too simple until you notice how few accounts actually commit to it.

He even shows the trick of using the location field for a call to action instead of an actual location, since the standard bio field is capped at 160 characters. It’s a small move, but it’s the kind of detail that separates an account someone glances past from one they actually click into.

How do you turn a following into actual leads without spamming anyone?

This is where most accounts lose whatever trust they built. Mike’s rule on direct messages is blunt: one person at a time. You can reuse the same message across multiple people, but you send it individually, never blasted to a list. His reasoning is simple. A message that clearly went to forty people at once reads as spam and gets ignored, or worse, gets the sender blocked. A message that reads personal gets a reply.

so it’s just uh two months pretty much i’ve gone from seven followers all the way up to 5 645 organically from doing exactly what i’m showing you today uh so just um you know

That growth, on one of his own accounts, came from nothing more exotic than consistency: value posts, quotes credited to their original authors, retweets, and the occasional personal update, mixed so no single account ever feels like one long advertisement. He tracks all of it through Twitter’s own analytics, watching which posts get the best engagement and then doing more of what’s already working rather than guessing at what might.

The tools underneath all of this are free too. TweetDeck lets him run eight accounts from one screen, schedule a week of posts in advance, and send the same post to a handful of related accounts without logging in and out all day. Canva handles the graphics. None of it costs anything beyond the time it takes to sit down and do it consistently, which is really the whole point of the session: free marketing isn’t free of effort, it’s free of ad spend, and those are very different things.

The full recording goes much deeper into the mobile app, the analytics dashboard, and exactly how Mike finds new people to follow through hashtag search, and it’s worth watching in full if any part of your own Twitter account has been sitting quiet. If you’re building a business with more time than money right now, this is the kind of detail that actually moves the needle.

Hey guys, Mike van der Belden here, and I'm just, today I'm going to be covering Twitter, understanding Twitter, and the free way to market on Twitter. So what I will be covering in this training is important limits to understand within Twitter, how to create a high converting profile, tweet deck and how to use it effectively, mobile app and using multiple accounts, create, use of hashtags and DMs, which is direct messaging, understanding the analytics, and we're going to jump straight into it.

I'm going to have some important numbers that you, that you should know, just so you can know what the limitations are. You can follow up to a thousand people a day on Twitter, obviously. You know, you don't want to, you don't recommend that, because if you do, if you're following, it does, people a day, you're going to be seeing a spam. And Twitter will probably shut down your accounts. And realistic, trying to follow a thousand people a day on one account is hard enough, let alone trying to do it on multiple accounts.

So, you know, if you can do 150 to 200 people a day, then that, that is, you know, a really good way to get followers to follow you back. You know, out of that hundred, hundred and fifty. You might get 30, 40, 50 people even following you back, because you know, it's all about, it's all about following, it's all about being followed.

You can follow up to two thousand people at one time. But there are limits. Once you follow 2,000 users, you will be able to follow only 10% more users than your followers. So if you have 2,000 followers, you'll be able to follow only two hundred, two thousand two hundred users. So that's just a 10% ratio.

So what I do is I always make sure that I have, I have, you know, thousand to fifteen hundred more people following me then I am following. So if I've got five thousand, if I've got five thousand people that I'm following, then I'll make sure that I've got. You know, six to six and a half thousand people that are following me, so I'm still within that, you know, that one thousand ratio.

You can send up to one thousand direct messages a day, but I recommend you do no more than 250 max, depending on how many people follow you back. So you know, if you've got 30 people that have followed you back to the day, obviously you're only going to send out 30 direct messages to those people. If you've got. You know, if you have had 500 people follow you back for the day, still do not send more than 250 messages out for that day, because Twitter will see you as, you know, spamming, and they have limitations on that, and what you can and can't do. So just be careful with that on how you do your direct messages.

You can send 2,400 tweets a day. But obviously it's not necessary, and I've seen between, you know, five to ten tweets a day, and that's more than enough. I mean, that gets good interaction. Twitter likes to see you active on your account, they like to see, you know. You're putting out various posts, like, see you putting out regular posts, just like, you know, most social media networks, they like to see content, they like to see activity.

So, you know, just put out 5 to 10 tweets a day on each account. Only use two hashtags and your posts, and do not spam the same ones over and over again. So, you know. You don't want to be doing 20 posts a day and hashtagging the same one, you know, travel, because you're just going to be spamming too much, and chances are somebody will probably complain, complain about your account, and you may get shut down, or you may get put, you know, in the, in what I call the Twitter jail, where they lock up your account for a day or two. So just make sure that you know you don't go too crazy with your hashtags. Twitter actually recommends only doing two hashtags in your posts. I know people do a lot of, a lot more than that. I don't, I do, you know, one, two hashtags, and a lot of time I don't do any hashtags at all.

Now, do not spam too many of the same posts. So what I mean by that is, if I'm running four accounts, I've got four travel accounts. Then I will send out the same tweet to four accounts, but I won't do any more than that of duplicate content, because Twitter loves, Twitter loves retweets more than they love duplicate content from one user. So just be careful not to throw out, you know, 30 posts the same over 30 accounts, because you know, you will probably be getting to Twitter jail, like I was talking about. So yeah, just make sure that you don't, don't over spam, don't spam at all, to be honest.

Now I'm going to move into, just bring up my profile. This is the main profile that I use. Actually, I run eight accounts, 8 personal accounts, between myself and my wife. So, and we have our joint account, we have a personal account, so we have an account for our blog. You know, we have various different, different accounts on here. And we market them, you know, almost identically, depending on the niche market.

So you might use a niche market, might be travel, it might be, you know, stay at home moms, at month be, you know, wanting to build a business, anywhere from TOMORROW PAYIMA ALPINE, you know, wanting to build a business online. Um, just make sure that. You know, your account is actually, um, congruent with what your, your message is.

Um, what we do, you know, personally, is, is attraction marketing. So we're not throwing offer, and you know, offers in people's faces, we're just. You know, building a relationship and getting people, you know, to know us. Again, so we can actually get to know them, and we can move forward, and people get interested in what we're doing, they ask us questions. And that's kind of how we create, you know, our relationship with them.

So I'll start from the very top here, um, I'm going to go into the header. So I've just created a header, you can read it, says, I travel the world endlessly teaching others how to live the laptop lifestyle. So that's just me telling people what I do. There's a picture. You know, on the beach, obviously living the laptop lifestyle. Um, just hang out with people, and I'm going to go into the header, and I'm going to hang out. So that's just a bit of an introduction.

Uh, the profile itself, the profile picture over here, uh, I've got a picture of us when we're traveling through Prague. So. You know, this account's all about travel, and us enjoying what we're doing. So obviously, you know, the beach, and then I've also got us traveling, you know, through, through a country. And I've written a little bit of an inspirational quote on that, which is, if you want things in your life to change, you have to change things in your life.

So I'm just kind of putting through a little bit of a message to people that look like me, and I'm just kind of putting through a little bit of a message to people that look like me, and I'm just kind of putting through a little bit of a message to people that look at my profile. So they'll think, okay. You know, you know, you've really got something, you really, really get them thinking about, you know, what they're reading, so they actually start to. Uh, you know, build a relationship from the very beginning.

Um, I'll scroll down here now, for this account here, um, the profile is at free for travel, um, because obviously it's. It's all about traveling and being free, so I can travel. So it's congruent with my message, congruent with my photos, and want to move out to what I post, so the profile itself, like I say, it's all about, you know, being attractive, not being spammy, but you know, giving enough information so they understand what you do, and you know, understand the lifestyle that you live. And how you live it.

So for me, I travel the world full time with my wife, Regina. We help travelers who want to travel and live the laptop lifestyle. So I'm telling them, introducing myself, introducing my wife, um, telling them that we travel and we live the laptop lifestyle. So, like, again, it's not in the face, it's not trying to sell. It's just telling them exactly what we do and who we are.

Um, and then I put a call to action at the bottom here, which is, click below for more info. I'm just going to show you how I do that, because you're limited to 160 characters in your actual bio itself, and just separate it and make the, the quarter action look a bit more sexy.

If you go into your, sorry, go into your edit profile here, you can actually add it in the location, where you put your location, uh, information in. So instead of clicking on, or searching for your location. You can actually put in a call to action, which is a very, uh, handy way of making the profile look good and getting people to actually look, you know, to click on your link.

The link itself is the same as the free, you know, my free for travel, and then my link has free for travel also in it, which goes to. Um, either, you know, your landing page or your blog to offer, depending on where you want to send it. Um, and so what it does, it looks sexy for people that come through, okay. Okay, nice profile, nice looking, nice looking link, you got the call to action, they're going to click through and see where it goes. So just make sure it looks nice and sexy by doing that.

Now for the posts, what I do is, I do, I do value-based posts, I do. You know, blog posts, I do inspirational quotes, I do, I retweet other people's stuff, because I want to get interaction on my, on my page. And get people to come through and check out what I'm doing.

So, for, as you can see up here, I haven't done any posts for a few days, actually, because I've been traveling, we actually just got to Bali now, investment. So what I've done here is a post, investment, travel is an investment in yourself. So again, I'm just getting people. I'm just getting people to think about what I'm writing, and getting to think about, you know, what, that's, that's a really, really good point, it's a good quote. And you know, um, you sort of build a relationship with people, because you're not spamming them.

And I, I also put down, you know, who wrote the quote, who was the original author of the quote, who came up with the quote. Because I don't understand if it was content and throwing out other people's content without giving credit. So I had their name. So I'm not trying to, I'm giving credit to the person, you know, that deserves it, and that way I'm not going to be, you know, caught out for the, for stem people's posts. Um, or trying to say that they're my own personal posts. So, um, just be aware of that.

So I'm just going to go through and show you a couple of other posts of what I'm doing, what I've done. More inspirational quotes here, um, this is, uh, one of the blog posts that we're doing. We're the blog post series, uh, we had a 17 day Bali countdown. Um, and what was happening is, we just did, well, my wife Regina, she did a blog post. You know, a video blog post and a value-based blog post every day for the countdown. And then I've just promoted on my Twitter, and I just have a link going to the blog post, which is a really good way of getting traffic, you know, free traffic to your, to your website, or to your Empower Network website, or your WordPress website, or wherever you are sending your traffic to. So this is another, you know, just a personal post I've done here, after 30 hours of travel from Los Angeles to Tokyo to Singapore, we finally made it to Bali. Um, and I struck a picture of us in the pool with. Uh, Brian and Ronda from the Unstoppable Family.

And then, um, you know, it's just me living my personal life and just sharing it on the internet, which is, uh. You know, it's pretty much all I do, all we do, to actually get, get the, you know, the leads and sales coming through. Um, and then again, I just want to point out this link here, it says. You know, crazilyfree.com, and I'm going to show you how to get the leads and sales coming through.

Um, and then again, I just want to point out this link here, it says. You know, crazilyfree.com. Uh, if you scroll back up, I just want to show you the importance of being congruent. So this link here also has a crazilyfree.com in it, because I don't want to be, you know, putting a link up here and then do multiple spammy links in here, different links.

So as you notice, this one's also got crazily free. Um. This is goes to our YouTube, to our YouTube account. Um, this one is also, as you can see, crazy free, crazy free. So I don't want to be putting up, you know, different links a day on my account, because a nobody's not going to know if I'm actually real, or if I'm spamming, or if I'm trying to, you know. Um, they don't know what the offer is, they don't know what I'm doing, because they don't know what, like, to click, you know, click to link, link to click. Wow.

Um, so that's, that's pretty much what I'm doing on the post daily. So there's some personal posts, value based posts. Uh, I do free trainings, and I'll just kind of mix it up. I just want to, don't spac people some, just, you know, make it fun. I post my hangouts, we post hangouts on here, if we're going to go to a hangout, more blogs, some cool pictures. So just mix it up a little bit, you know, don't, don't spam people.

Um. That is, uh, the really, the, uh, the quick overview of your actual account. Um, so what I'm going to move on to now is the Twitter analytics. Everything I do here is, uh, free, free marketing. I don't pay for any, uh, any advertising on Twitter, everything I do is free. Uh. We get, you know, great, great leads and sales from it, um, just by sharing value-based content.

So I only have a quick run through of this, I'm not going to get too deep into it, but I want to give you an idea of where everything is, so you can. Um, utilize the, the, um, the tools that they give you to. So this is a 28-day summary, um, then 238 tweets, 555.1k impressions, 11.6k profile visits, which is, you know, really powerful over 28 days.

Um. You know, that's, that's a lot of people coming through and looking at my account on a daily basis, and you know, obviously that's where a lot of the leads are coming from, and putting out the content, they're coming to my site, they're looking at it, they like it, they click on my link, and they subscribe to my channel. And they subscribe to my channel, and they subscribe to my channel, and they subscribe to my channel, and they subscribe to my channel, and they subscribe to my list.

And then we send out the obviously automatic email autoresponders, um. You know, which are congruent with this niche, which is, um, you know, travel. Uh, 215 mentions, which is nice, and the total amount of followers, and the rise I've had. And I'm going to go over this very soon, of why I've got such a, um, you know, of the, of the profile itself, and why it is so high. Um, you can look in here at your top tweets, tweet highlights. And it'll give you the top tweet, it'll show you the activity of your tweets.

Now, you can do this on your main page, but I find doing in here is a lot easier, because everything's in one place, and you have to go scrolling for your top tweets. Uh. So, 1565 impressions, 20 favorites, 19 retweets, 15 photo video clicks, and I've had three link clicks, so, and three profile clicks. So I know that one tweet, you know, got me three people to make a video. And I'm going to show you how to do that, so I'm going to show you how to do that, so I'm going to show you how to do that, so I'm going to show you how to do that, to my site, three people to my profile.

Um, I've got a new follower from it, um. You know, so it's a good, it's a good post, it's good value based, um, a good, you know, post for people to see. And that's just an inspirational, inspirational post which people who will do, like, uh, let's go into the tweets now.

This is another place where you can find out all your tweets, um, how many you've done, um, organic impressions, as you can see, 3780 organic impressions, you did three tweets, two tweets, eight tweets. You know. I try and stay consistent, but sometimes I do drop off, uh, with the amount of tweets I do, but you know, just try and be consistent with what you, what you're doing.

Um, so I look at the overall tweets, I can look at the top tweets. And this will give me an idea of what, what tweets are working better. So, you know, for this one here, this is again an inspirational quote, um, and it's got good impressions, engagement. And engagement raised four point three percent.

So I'm going to show you how to do that, and I'm going to show you, you know, what you want to use, that, what you want to take away from this, is that if you have got a good post that is converting really well, it's got good engagements, good impressions, then do other posts like it. Because obviously people are liking it. So carry on doing what they, what the audience is actually appreciating, or actually liking, so the more, more good content you've got out there, the better.

So you can just look through them, find out which ones are working the best, and then do other quotes, you know, other posts similar to ones that you've already done. And also, you can use. You know, you can use Twitter to do, to do, um, if you're on periscopes, in the periscope, you can send them to your Instagram feeds, you know, you can. You can send them to your other social medias, your Facebook, your Facebook pages. So there's a lot you can do on, on Twitter.

Now, tweets and replies, um, same thing, so you just look through it, uh, see, you know. Uh, basically what's the impressions you've had, the engagements, and the engagement rates over, you know, very similar. It's good to look at your numbers, and just so you, just so you are aware, just so I can show you, as you can see, I have done no. Um, you know, promoted tweets on this account at all.

So, just going to followers now, this is one of my old accounts, which I didn't really use until this, just in May, I think May 22nd, I think I really started to use this account. Um, and now it's July 25th. So it's just, uh, two months, pretty much, I've gone from seven followers all the way up to 5,645 organically, from doing exactly what I'm showing you today. Uh, so just, um, you know, be aware that it is possible. You just got to be, you know, consistent, um, interact you know, talk to people, send out messages, retweet, you know, just, just the basic, you know, really the same thing that you sort of do on Facebook. Right, you're always contacting people, you're talking to people. You're liking stuff, you're, so just, just, you know, be active, and and it'll grow pretty fast, so you can get a good amount of followers. Uh, pretty quickly.

Like this one here, is, you know, over, over the next 4246, and then the next day I got up to 4,466, so that's over 200 followers in one day. Um, so, just. You know, it can be done, and it is, it can be done, it can be done, and it is possibly done. So. So let me get out of there now.

This is a quick overview of the analytics. Now I'm going to go into one of the tools that I use to do my posts, which is Tweet Deck. It's, this is a free, free download from Twitter, you can either use it on your browser, or you can download the app to your computer, both work fine, I use both, there's no. There's no difference between the two.

And here you can add your accounts, so like I said, I've got like eight or nine accounts sitting in here, so you can add multiple accounts in here. You can look at the messages in here as well, you can reply to the messages from here, this is messages for all accounts. So you can just go through them. You can look at the mentions over here as well, if people have mentioned you, so you can retweet, you know, you can tweet back to them, where you can mention them in here, you can send messages back. You can, you can, you know, do retweets in here if you want to.

So this is very handy. Um, and then obviously there is my accounts, my user accounts, and what I'm, you know, what I'm posting. So really. This is just, uh, I use this a lot, um, because it's a very easy way, and then that just saves you logging in and out of your accounts. If you're. You know, if you're on your lap, if you're on your laptop, and you're not, you're not out and about, and this is what I prefer to use over my phone, over the phone app.

So in here, you can do tweets as well. And the good thing about it is, you can do multiple tweets to, I need the same tweet to multiple accounts, like I said before, just do maximum four, no higher than four. Um, but if I want to do a post of these, you know, these four accounts, which are travel accounts. Then I can, you know, write something and tweet to, to them.

Which I'm, you know, I'm not going to do right now, because I haven't done any, uh, any blog post or anything that I want to sort of. Uh, put out, but you know, just for instance, you could, I could just, I'm just going to write something for an example, actually. So I'll just do something like that, oh, just got barley and we're loving it.

So what here I could do, is I can add an image from somewhere, from my desktop. I can add an image, which I'm not going to do. Um, I can Twitter to those four accounts, and it will send out. I can also write here, um, check out our blog, blog for the latest updates about our travels. All right, so I could write that. I can put in our blog, okay, and boom, I can send that out to those four accounts.

So I'm actually going to tweet that, because we have actually got a blog, um, running on the, on the barley. So I'm just going to tweet that out right now. So I'm going to send it to those four accounts, and it will just send out, and you come over here, and it will pop up straight away, boom, and it'll go straight to our website, straight to the website. Cool, so that's pretty much, um, your tweets within Tweet Deck. Now, you can also, you can do a maximum 140 characters, as you can see here. Um. You can also do scheduled tweet, which is really good if you are traveling, we do use this a lot.

So you can, I, I do up to a maximum of like a week at a time, and it's really fast to do on Twitter. You can, you can set them up really, really quickly. Um, and I'll just send out, you can see the day, at the time, you know, twice a day, whatever you want to do, morning, night, three times a day, five times a day, you just do multiple tweets, add them here, schedule them. And that will send out automatically.

Tweet Deck doesn't have to be open, your computer doesn't have to be open, uh, your computer can close and off, and they'll sort of send out the tweets for you. So it's a very, very handy tool. So that is, uh, a quick overview of Tweet Deck, and what I use.

And I'm going to go into the photos. Um, what I do for photos here, so I use canva.com, and none of these, nothing here I'm putting up as affiliate links, so don't worry about, uh. You know, clicking on, or you know, searching for any, like, canva.com stuff like that.

Um, I use the Twitter post here, because I want to do Twitter post images, so I've already got one sitting here ready, just to, you know, make this pretty quick. Because our internet's a little bit slow here. Um, I've uploaded an image already, and it's just sitting here in the, uh, the Canva app.

So what you want to do is, uh, if you want to, you know, protect your, your personal photos. And protect what your, you know, your imagery, uh, especially if it's something really good, or if you're releasing a product and you've done like a really nice banner or something, you know, then you kind of want to make sure that nobody else steals your, steal your stuff, right?

So you can add a text to it. So for this I'm just going to add a website. You can change the font color, you can change fonts, I'm not going to get too deep into this, but it's, it's pretty self-explanatory. So you can add that if you've got your own logo, your own branded logo that you use, like we do, then I can also add that. You know, to my image, and I can save it, and just, you know, set it somewhere nice, save it.

So I've got a nice image, it's branded. It's got a website link on it, so if people are less likely to steal, you know, we'll take our, our photos and use them for their own, uh, their own marketing, because nobody likes it when people. You know, takes other people's, you know, designs, and starts running around the internet.

Um, so that's, that is Canva covered. So what I'll do is just download that to my desktop. And then when I go and do my tweet, and Tweet Deck, upload the image, and send it out, so nice and easy.

Now, what I'm going to do is, I'm going to move on to the application on your phone itself, uh, which is really, really good. Let me just find it here. Okay, and this going on, cool, okay. So this is my, uh, my app on Twitter, I'm sorry, on my phone, I'm just going to go quickly into this now.

So this is that main account I've shown you. Um. It's pretty much identical, and you can see, on the phone app itself, it actually looks, you know, quite sexy, and, uh, engaging. So people won't want to actually, you know, read through my profile, or maybe click on the link with the call down from the bottom. Um, so you know, it's already pretty well self-explanatory here. Now, what I want to do, I want to show you in here, is that for when you're trying to follow people, you can just follow, you can find people from hashtag, which is a really good way, Twitter also will give you suggestions on who to follow. So I'll give you some suggestions on who to follow, so I'll give you some kind of an originally, um, reply.

Uh. I'll go through the, uh, through what they suggest, I'll look at the, look at the profile, see if it suits me, see if it's someone that I want to, you know, to follow, so they can follow me back, and you know. This is right up my alley. So I go, yes, I follow them, and the chances are, you know, they may not follow me back, but that's what I'll just go through. So it's really, really fast.

I'll also go into the search bar up here, and I'll just type in a hashtag, so I'm just going to put, for instance, travel, and it'll come up, top tweets, and also tweets. So I can just look through and see who else is, you know, use the, the hashtag travel by this one here, and I can jump on her profile.

Love to travel and see the world, she's a blogger, perfect, right my alley, I'll follow her, and then it will give me also give me more suggestions. And who you can follow, once you've done that through, through Twitter. So you can go to our tweets, all tweets, that's a really good way of doing it.

The other way to do it, the other way that I do it is, but slowly there with me, you search for people, so it'll be either tailored or popular. So this is. You know, again, Twitter game giving, giving me the people that I may want to follow, so you know, they're suggesting that you may want to follow these people.

So I'll go through, and I'll look at some of these accounts, and I'll go, okay. You know what, do I really want for this person, tell me your dream, for lifestyle luxury trailer, yeah, you know, why not, I'll follow that. So I can go through, and I can just choose the ones that I, that I want to. You know, follow.

Also, in here I can just go to travel, they give you a whole lot of people that we know, a whole lot of accounts that are, you know, main accounts, verified accounts, that you can look at. So the travel magazine, you know, I could follow them. Because you know, obviously it's, it's right up my market, right my alley, and you can also look at who they're following, and their followers, as people that you actually want to follow.

So, like. I'm not going to get too deep into this, but you can just scroll through, and you've got a general idea of how I find people to follow. There's multiple ways of doing it, and you can just, you know, search through other people's profiles, look at their followers, and see if it's. You know, a traveler that you actually want to engage with.

Cool, so that is really the, the way that I, I find my, uh, my people to follow, um, my accounts. Let's go back to here. Right, so the next thing you can do on here is, you can actually go through your, your accounts from your phone.

So you can, uh, let me go to my other, one of my other travel blogs, so again, this is another one of mine. Um. You know, we are Mike and Regina, we travel, we're full-time travel bloggers, we teach fellow travelers how to start and monetize a blog, see our blog here.

So this is missing into our directly to our blog, so this is one of my blogging. You know, again, a nice looking profile, pictures of us, everything's congruent, travel blogger in my link, travel blogger in my name, and I introduce ourselves on the profile. So exactly the same, and if you look at the, the following to followers, again, I'm just going to cover that. You know, I'm, you know, over a thousand following a thousand less than I am, um, have a followers, which means that I can still follow up to a thousand people a day if I wanted to on this account. And you'll notice, it's, it'll be the same for all my accounts, because that's the way that I like to keep my numbers. Like this one here. So it's over a thousand people, so that way I don't get limited to the, uh, the ten percent rule.

Um, that is pretty much that. There's one more thing, actually, I always want to cover, is the DMs. Now let me just go into here, so DMs. Um, um, you know, send them from your phone, so I'll just, I'll just send a DM out to someone, um. That has sent me a DM. I've already checked them today, so that's why everything's mapped off.

Um, but like this one here, they sent me a, they've sent me a, it's me actually send them mission back, you can tell. Oh, this one here, she just sent me a. You know, a thumbs up. I've seen her, I've seen her a DM. Um, and this is, you know, thanks for being awesome, connect with us on our blog because we have a free gift for you.

So that's the end to my blog, to get my ebook in a direct message, she's put a thumbs up, she may want to check it out, you know. I may message you later on and just, you know, interact with her. Um, and there's others here, like this one again, thank you, uh, follow our troubles here, and that's a link to our Facebook page.

Um, so it's. You know, it's not spamming, it's not saying, hey, buy something, it's just a nice message with a link, go into a blog, you know, an ebook. Um, you know, a blog post, you know, to our Facebook fan page, to our personal Facebook page, um, stuff like that. So, like I say, I'm not, not just throwing stuff in their face.

Like this one here, it's going to give you another example, thank you, really appreciate your follow, discover us on our website. And then website, all the best. So, you know, you get an idea of what I'm actually doing, and that, that's is how I'm getting. Um, you know, our leads and sales from Twitter, um, all organically, just by doing exactly what I'm showing you.

Um, the other thing you have to also do, is just get out of there. Now, is you can send, um, when you do your DM, send it to one person only, don't go sending it to, you know, 40 people, because people want to get. Um, that personal connection, all right? So they want to get, if you're under a DM, send it to one person, and then, you know, if you want to copy and paste that DM, and then send it to the next person, send to the next person.

But don't send it to like 40 people, can't stand it, I won't even read it. And I'll just, I'll just block that user, usually, because to me it's, there's no personal connection, it's just spamming, and um. It isn't just no value in it at all. So make sure you do a DM to people, you know, individually, as a person, so you can connect with them.

Um, and that, that I think is, uh, my training on Twitter for the day. So I hope you enjoyed it. And, uh, we'll talk to you soon. Enjoy

Hey guys, Mike van der Belden here. And I'm just, today I'm going to be covering Twitter, understanding Twitter and the free way to market on Twitter. So what I will be covering in this training is important limits to understand within Twitter, how to create a high converting profile, tweet deck and how to use it effectively, mobile app and using multiple accounts, create use of hashtags and DMs which is direct messaging, understanding the analytics. And we're going to jump straight into it.

I'm going to have some important numbers that you should know, just so you can know what the limitations are. You can follow up to a thousand people a day on Twitter. Obviously, you know, you don't recommend that, because if you're following that many people a day, you're going to be seen as spam and Twitter will probably shut down your account. And realistically, trying to follow a thousand people a day on one account is hard enough, let alone trying to do it on multiple accounts. So if you can do 150 to 200 people a day, then that is a really good way to get followers to follow you back. Out of that hundred and fifty, you might get 30, 40, 50 people even following you back, because it's all about following, it's all about being followed.

You can follow up to two thousand people at one time, but there are limits. Once you follow 2,000 users, you will be able to follow only 10% more users than your followers. So if you have 2,000 followers, you'll be able to follow only two thousand two hundred users. So that's just a 10% ratio. So what I do is I always make sure that I have a thousand to fifteen hundred more people following me than I am following. So if I've got five thousand people that I'm following, then I'll make sure that I've got six to six and a half thousand people that are following me, so I'm still within that one thousand ratio.

You can send up to one thousand direct messages a day, but I recommend you do no more than 250 max, depending on how many people follow you back. So if you've got 30 people that have followed you back for the day, obviously you're only going to send out 30 direct messages to those people. If you've had 500 people follow you back for the day, still do not send more than 250 messages out for that day, because Twitter will see you as, you know, spamming, and they have limitations on that and what you can and can't do. So just be careful with that on how you do your direct messages.

You can send 2,400 tweets a day, but obviously it's not necessary, and I've seen between, you know, five to ten tweets a day and that's more than enough. I mean, that gets good interaction. Twitter likes to see you active on your account, they like to see you know you're putting out various posts, like see you putting out regular posts, just like you know most social media networks, they like to see content, they like to see activity. So just put out 5 to 10 tweets a day on each account.

Only use two hashtags in your posts and do not spam the same ones over and over again. So you know you don't want to be doing 20 posts a day and hashtagging the same one, you know, travel, because you're just going to be spamming too much, and chances are somebody will probably complain about your account and you may get shut down, or you may get put in what I call the Twitter jail, where they lock up your account for a day or two. So just make sure that you don't go too crazy with your hashtags. Twitter actually recommends only doing two hashtags in your posts. I know people do a lot more than that. I do one or two hashtags, and a lot of the time I don't do any hashtags at all.

Now, do not spam too many of the same posts. So what I mean by that is if I'm running four accounts, I've got four travel accounts, then I will send out the same tweet to four accounts, but I won't do any more than that of duplicate content, because Twitter loves, Twitter loves retweets more than they love duplicate content from one user. So just be careful not to throw out 30 posts the same over 30 accounts, because you will probably be getting to Twitter jail, like I was talking about. So just make sure that you don't over spam, don't spam at all, to be honest.

Now I'm going to move into just bring up my profile. This is the main profile that I use. Actually I run eight accounts, 8 personal accounts between myself and my wife, so and we have our joint account, we have a personal account, so we have an account for our blog, you know we have various different accounts on here and we market them, you know, almost identically depending on the niche market. So you might use a niche market might be travel, it might be stay at home moms, it might be wanting to build a business online, anywhere from Tomorrow Payima, Alpine, wanting to build a business online. Just make sure that your account is actually congruent with what your message is.

What we do personally is attraction marketing, so we're not throwing offers in people's faces, we're just building a relationship and getting people, you know, to know us again so we can actually get to know them, and we can move forward, and people get interested in what we're doing, they ask us questions, and that's kind of how we create our relationship with them.

So I'll start from the very top here. I'm going to go into the header, so I've just created a header. You can read it, says, "I travel the world endlessly teaching others how to live the laptop lifestyle." So that's just me telling people what I do. There's a picture on the beach, obviously living the laptop lifestyle, just hanging out with people. So that's just a bit of an introduction. The profile itself, the profile picture over here, I've got a picture of us when we're traveling through Prague. So this account's all about travel and us enjoying what we're doing, so obviously the beach, and then I've also got us traveling through a country, and I've written a little bit of an inspirational quote on that, which is, "If you want things in your life to change, you have to change things in your life." So I'm just kind of putting through a little bit of a message to people that look at my profile, so they'll think, "Okay, you've really got something," you really get them thinking about what they're reading, so they actually start to build a relationship from the very beginning.

I'll scroll down here now. For this account here, the profile is at freefortravel, because obviously it's all about traveling and being free so I can travel. So it's congruent with my message, congruent with my photos, and what I post. So the profile itself, like I say, it's all about being attractive, not being spammy, but giving enough information so they understand what you do and understand the lifestyle that you live and how you live it. So for me: "I travel the world full time with my wife Regina. We help travelers who want to travel and live the laptop lifestyle." So I'm introducing myself, introducing my wife, telling them that we travel and we live the laptop lifestyle. Again, it's not in the face, it's not trying to sell, it's just telling them exactly what we do and who we are. And then I put a call to action at the bottom here, which is "click below for more info." I'm just going to show you how I do that, because you're limited to 160 characters in your actual bio itself, and just separate it and make the call to action look a bit more sexy.

If you go into your edit profile here, you can actually add it in the location where you put your location information in, so instead of clicking on or searching for your location, you can actually put in a call to action, which is a very handy way of making the profile look good and getting people to actually click on your link. The link itself is the same as freefortravel, and then my link has freefortravel also in it, which goes to either your landing page or your blog or offer, depending on where you want to send it. And so what it does, it looks sexy for people that come through. Okay, nice profile, nice looking link, you got the call to action, they're going to click through and see where it goes. So just make sure it looks nice and sexy by doing that.

Now for the posts, what I do is I do value-based posts, I do blog posts, I do inspirational quotes, I retweet other people's stuff because I want to get interaction on my page and get people to come through and check out what I'm doing. So as you can see up here, I haven't done any posts for a few days actually because I've been traveling, we actually just got to Bali now. So what I've done here is a post: "Investment. Travel is an investment in yourself." So again, I'm just getting people to think about what I'm writing, and getting to think about, you know, that's a really good point, it's a good quote, and you sort of build a relationship with people because you're not spamming them. And I also put down who wrote the quote, who was the original author of the quote, who came up with the quote, because I don't want to be, you know, if it was content, throwing out other people's content without giving credit. So I had their name, so I'm giving credit to the person that deserves it, and that way I'm not going to be caught out for stealing people's posts or trying to say that they're my own personal posts. So just be aware of that.

So I'm just going to go through and show you a couple of other posts of what I'm doing, what I've done, more inspirational quotes here. This is one of the blog posts that we're doing, we're the blog post series, we had a 17 day Bali countdown, and what was happening is we just did, well, my wife Regina, she did a blog post, you know, a video blog post and a value-based blog post every day for the countdown, and then I've just promoted on my Twitter, and I just have a link going to the blog post, which is a really good way of getting traffic, you know, free traffic to your, to your website, or to your Empower Network website, or your WordPress website, or wherever you are sending your traffic to.

So this is another just a personal post I've done here: "After 30 hours of travel from Los Angeles to Tokyo to Singapore, we finally made it to Bali," and I struck a picture of us in the pool with Brian and Ronda from the Unstoppable Family, and then it's just me living my personal life and just sharing it on the internet, which is pretty much all I do, all we do, to actually get the leads and sales coming through. And then again I just want to point out this link here, it says crazilyfree.com. If you scroll back up, I just want to show you the importance of being congruent, because this link here also has crazilyfree.com in it, because I don't want to be putting a link up here and then do multiple spammy different links in here. As you notice, this one's also got crazilyfree, this one goes to our YouTube account, this one is also, as you can see, crazilyfree, crazilyfree. So I don't want to be putting up different links a day on my account, because nobody's not going to know if I'm actually real or if I'm spamming, or if they don't know what the offer is, they don't know what to click, which link to click. So that's pretty much what I'm doing on the posts daily. So there's some personal posts, value based posts, I do free trainings, and I'll just kind of mix it up. I don't want to spam people, just make it fun. I post my hangouts, we post hangouts on here if we're going to go to a hangout, more blogs, some cool pictures. So just mix it up a little bit, don't spam people. That is really the quick overview of your actual account.

So what I'm going to move on to now is the Twitter analytics. Everything I do here is free marketing, I don't pay for any advertising on Twitter, everything I do is free, we get great leads and sales from it just by sharing value-based content. So I'll only do a quick run through of this, I'm not going to get too deep into it, but I want to give you an idea of where everything is so you can utilize the tools that they give you. So this is a 28-day summary: 238 tweets, 555.1k impressions, 11.6k profile visits, which is, you know, really powerful over 28 days, you know that's that's a lot of people coming through and looking at my account on a daily basis, and you know obviously that's where a lot of the leads are coming from, and putting out the content, they're coming to my site, they're looking at it, they like it, they click on my link, and they subscribe to my channel, and they subscribe to my channel, and they subscribe to my list, and then we send out the automatic email autoresponders, which are congruent with this niche, which is travel. 215 mentions, which is nice, and the total amount of followers, and the rise I've had, and I'm going to go over this very soon of why the profile itself is so high.

You can look in here at your top tweets, tweet highlights, and it'll give you the top tweet, it'll show you the activity of your tweets. Now you can do this on your main page, but I find doing it in here is a lot easier because everything's in one place and you don't have to go scrolling for your top tweets. So 1565 impressions, 20 favorites, 19 retweets, 15 photo video clicks, and I've had three link clicks and three profile clicks. So I know that one tweet got me three people to my site, three people to my profile, I've got a new follower from it. So it's a good post, a good value based post for people to see, and that's just an inspirational post which people will like.

Let's go into the tweets now. This is another place where you can find out all your tweets, how many you've done, organic impressions, as you can see, 3780 organic impressions. You did three tweets, two tweets, eight tweets. I try and stay consistent, but sometimes I do drop off with the amount of tweets I do, but just try and be consistent with what you're doing. So I look at the overall tweets, I can look at the top tweets, and this will give me an idea of what tweets are working better. So for this one here, this is again an inspirational quote, and it's got good impressions, engagement, and engagement rate is four point three percent. What you want to take away from this is that if you have got a good post that is converting really well, it's got good engagement, good impressions, then do other posts like it, because obviously people are liking it. So carry on doing what the audience is actually appreciating or actually liking, so the more good content you've got out there the better. So you can just look through them, find out which ones are working the best, and then do other posts similar to the ones that you've already done. And also you can use Twitter, if you're on Periscope, you can send them to your Instagram feeds, you can send them to your other social medias, your Facebook, your Facebook pages. So there's a lot you can do on Twitter.

Now, tweets and replies, same thing, so you just look through it, see the impressions you've had, the engagements and the engagement rates, very similar. It's good to look at your numbers just so you are aware, just so I can show you, as you can see I have done no promoted tweets on this account at all.

So just going to followers now. This is one of my old accounts which I didn't really use until this just in May, I think May 22nd, I think I really started to use this account, and now it's July 25th, so it's just two months. Pretty much I've gone from seven followers all the way up to 5,645 organically from doing exactly what I'm showing you today. So just you know be aware that it is possible, you just got to be, you know, consistent, interact, you know, talk to people, send out messages, retweet, you know, just the basic, you know, really the same thing that you sort of do on Facebook, right? You're always contacting people, you're talking to people, you're liking stuff, you're so just you know be active and it'll grow pretty fast. So you can get a good amount of followers pretty quickly. Like this one here is, you know, over the next 4246, and then the next day I got up to 4,466, so that's over 200 followers in one day. So you know it can be done, and it is it can be done, it can be done and it is possibly done.

So let me get out of there. Now this is a quick overview of the analytics. Now I'm going to go into one of the tools that I use to do my posts, which is Tweet Deck. This is a free download from Twitter, you can either use it on your browser or you can download the app to your computer, both work fine, I use both, there's no difference between the two. And here you can add your accounts, so like I said, I've got like eight or nine accounts sitting in here, so you can add multiple accounts in here. You can look at the messages in here as well, you can reply to the messages from here, this is messages for all accounts, so you can just go through them, you can look at the mentions over here as well, if people have mentioned you, so you can retweet, you know, you can tweet back to them where you can mention them in here, you can send messages back, you can, you know, do retweets in here if you want to. So this is very handy. And then obviously there is my accounts, my user accounts, and what I'm posting. So really this is just I use this a lot because it's a very easy way, and then that just saves you logging in and out of your accounts if you're, you know, if you're on your laptop and you're not out and about, and this is what I prefer to use over my phone, over the phone app.

So in here you can do tweets as well, and the good thing about it is you can do multiple tweets to I need the same tweet to multiple accounts, like I said before, just do maximum four, no higher than four, but if I want to do a post of these, you know, these four accounts which are travel accounts, then I can, you know, write something and tweet to them, which I'm you know not going to do right now because I haven't done any blog post or anything that I want to sort of put out, but you know just for instance you could, I could just, I'm just going to write something for an example, actually. So I'll just do something like that, "Oh just got to Bali and we're loving it." So here I could do is I can add an image from somewhere from my desktop, which I'm not going to do, I can tweet to those four accounts and it will send out. I can also write here, "Check out our blog for the latest updates about our travels," and I can put in our blog link, and boom, I can send that out to those four accounts.

So I'm actually going to tweet that because we have actually got a blog running on the Bali trip, so I'm just going to tweet that out right now, so I'm going to send it to those four accounts and it will just send out, and you come over here and it will pop up straight away, boom, and it'll go straight to our website. Cool. So that's pretty much your tweets within Tweet Deck. Now you can also do a maximum 140 characters, as you can see here. You can also do scheduled tweets, which is really good if you are traveling, we do use this a lot, so I do up to a maximum of like a week at a time, and it's really fast to do on Twitter, you can set them up really quickly, and you can see the day, the time, twice a day, whatever you want to do, morning, night, three times a day, five times a day, you just do multiple tweets, add them here, schedule them, and that will send out automatically. Tweet Deck doesn't have to be open, your computer doesn't have to be open, your computer can close and off, and they'll sort of send out the tweets for you. So it's a very handy tool. So that is a quick overview of Tweet Deck and what I use.

And I'm going to go into the photos, what I do for photos here, so I use Canva.com, and none of these, nothing here I'm putting up is affiliate links, so don't worry about clicking on or searching for any Canva.com stuff like that. I use the Twitter post here because I want to do Twitter post images, so I've already got one sitting here, ready, just to make this pretty quick because our internet's a little bit slow here, I've uploaded an image already and it's just sitting here in the Canva app. So what you want to do is if you want to, you know, protect your personal photos and protect what your, you know, your imagery, especially if it's something really good, or if you're releasing a product and you've done, like, a really nice banner or something, you know, then you kind of want to make sure that nobody else steals your, steal your stuff, right? So you can add text to it. So for this I'm just going to add a website, you can change the font color, you can change fonts, I'm not going to get too deep into this, but it's pretty self-explanatory. So you can add that, if you've got your own logo, your own branded logo that you use, like we do, then I can also add that to my image and I can save it, set it somewhere nice, save it. So I've got a nice image, it's branded, it's got a website link on it, so people are less likely to steal our photos and use them for their own marketing, because nobody likes it when people take other people's designs and starts running around the internet. So that is Canva covered.

So what I'll do is just download that to my desktop, and then when I go and do my tweet in Tweet Deck, upload the image and send it out, so nice and easy. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to move on to the application on your phone itself, which is really good. Let me just find it here, okay. So this is my app on Twitter, on my phone, I'm just going to go quickly into this now. So this is that main account I've shown you, it's pretty much identical, and you can see on the phone app itself it actually looks quite sexy and engaging, so people won't want to actually read through my profile or maybe click on the link with the call to action from the bottom. So it's already pretty well self-explanatory here.

Now what I want to do, I want to show you in here, is that for when you're trying to follow people, you can just follow, you can find people from hashtag which is a really good way. Twitter also will give you suggestions on who to follow, I'll give you some suggestions on who to follow, I'll give you some kind of an originally reply, I'll go through the through what they suggest, I'll look at the profile, see if it suits me, see if it's someone that I want to follow so they can follow me back, and this is right up my alley, so I go yes, I follow them, and chances are they may not follow me back, but I'll just go through, it's really fast. I'll also go into the search bar up here and I'll just type in a hashtag, so I'm just going to put, for instance, travel, and it'll come up, top tweets and also tweets, so I can just look through and see who else is using the hashtag travel, and this one here, I can jump on her profile, "Love to travel and see the world," she's a blogger, perfect, right, my alley, I'll follow her. And then it will give me also give me more suggestions on who you can follow once you've done that through Twitter. So you can go through tweets, all tweets, that's a really good way of doing it.

The other way to do it, the other way that I do it is, but slowly there with me, you search for people, so it'll be either tailored or popular, so this is you know again Twitter, game, giving me the people that I may want to follow, so you know they're suggesting that you may want to follow these people, so I'll go through and I'll look at some of these accounts and I'll go, okay, you know what, do I really want, for this person, "Tell me your dream for lifestyle, luxury trailer"? Yeah, you know, why not, I'll follow that. So I can go through and I can just choose the ones that I that I want to, you know, follow. Also in here I can just go to travel, they give you a whole lot of people that we know, a whole lot of accounts that are, you know, main accounts, verified accounts that you can look at, so the travel magazine, you know, I could follow them because you know obviously it's it's right up my market, right my alley, and you can also look at who they're following and their followers as people that you actually want to follow. So I'm not going to get too deep into this, but you can just scroll through and you've got a general idea of how I find people to follow. There's multiple ways of doing it, and you can just search through other people's profiles, look at their followers and see if it's a traveler that you actually want to engage with. Cool. So that is really the way that I find my people to follow.

Let's go back to here. So the next thing you can do on here is you can actually go through your accounts from your phone, so let me go to one of my other travel blogs. So again, this is another one of mine, "We are Mike and Regina, we travel, we're full-time travel bloggers, we teach fellow travelers how to start and monetize a blog, see our blog here," so this is linking directly to our blog. So this is one of my blogging accounts, again a nice looking profile, pictures of us, everything's congruent, travel blogger in my link, travel blogger in my name, and I introduce ourselves on the profile, so exactly the same. And if you look at the following to followers, again I'm just going to cover that, I'm over a thousand less following than I have followers, which means that I can still follow up to a thousand people a day if I wanted to on this account. And you'll notice it'll be the same for all my accounts, because that's the way that I like to keep my numbers, like this one here, it's over a thousand people, so that way I don't get limited to the ten percent rule.

That is pretty much that. There's one more thing actually I always want to cover, which is the DMs. Now let me just go into here, DMs, you know, send them from your phone. So I'll just send a DM out to someone that has sent me a DM, I've already checked them today, so that's why everything's marked off, but like this one here, she just sent me a thumbs up, I've seen her DM, and this is, "Thanks for being awesome, connect with us on our blog because we have a free gift for you," so that sends them to my blog to get my ebook. In a direct message she's put a thumbs up, she may want to check it out, I may message her later on and just interact with her. And there's others here like this one again, "Thank you, follow our travels here," and that's a link to our Facebook page, so it's, you know, it's not spamming, it's not saying, "Hey, buy something," it's just a nice message with a link, go into a blog, you know, an ebook, you know, a blog post, you know, to our Facebook fan page, to our personal Facebook page, stuff like that. So like I say, I'm not just throwing stuff in their face, like this one here, it's going to give you another example, "Thank you, really appreciate your follow, discover us on our website," and then website, "all the best." So you get an idea of what I'm actually doing, and that's how I'm getting our leads and sales from Twitter, all organically, just by doing exactly what I'm showing you.

The other thing you have to also do is just get out of there now is you can send when you do your DM send it to one person only, don't go sending it to you know 40 people, because people want to get that personal connection, all right, so they want to get, if you're under a DM, send it to one person, and then, you know, if you want to copy and paste that DM and then send it to the next person, send to the next person, but don't send it to like 40 people, can't stand it, I won't even read it, and I'll just, I'll just block that user usually, because to me there's no personal connection, it's just spamming, and there's no value in it at all. So make sure you do a DM to people individually, as a person, so you can connect with them.

And that I think is my training on Twitter for the day, so I hope you enjoyed it and we'll talk to you soon. Enjoy.
