The Three Forces Working Against You Before You’ve Even Started

You booked the flight, packed the good shirt, and told the people closest to you that this weekend might change something. Some of them nodded politely. One of them probably asked, gently or not so gently, whether you’d actually thought this through. That quiet gap between what you believe is possible and what your own family is willing to believe for you is exactly where this opening session plants its flag, using an actor playing a nervous rookie named Mark, and his skeptical mother, to make an invisible problem impossible to ignore.

The skit is silly on purpose. VIP brownies, flip-flops, a mom who “supports” her son the way a girdle supports everything except what actually needs holding up. But underneath the jokes is a real framework, one worth carrying into every room you walk into for the rest of your career.

What are the three forces actually working against you before you’ve published anything?

The narration names them directly, and it’s worth sitting with each one instead of rushing past it, because most new marketers can name exactly one of the three and think they’ve covered the whole problem.

• The system: the nine-to-five script you were handed as the only acceptable path, the one that promises a couple of good weeks of retirement decades from now in exchange for everything before it.
• Well-intentioned friends and family: the people who love you and are still, without meaning to, the loudest voice telling you to sit back down.
• You, yourself: the internal doubt that shows up the moment the first two forces go quiet, because by then you’ve had plenty of practice believing them.

Here’s the part that gets missed. The third one is the only one you actually control, and it’s the one that does the most damage, because it doesn’t announce itself as an enemy. It sounds like your own voice, asking reasonable questions at exactly the wrong moment.

Why does a room full of strangers do something a video alone can’t?

Watch what happens once the skit ends and the actual welcome begins. A thousand people who’ve never met are asked to stand, to clap, to chant the same four words together, and the room does it without hesitation. That’s not just hype for hype’s sake. It’s the whole reason live events exist inside this kind of business. You can watch a training video alone in your kitchen and absorb the information. You cannot, alone in your kitchen, feel a thousand people decide something at the same moment you do. That shared decision is the actual product of the room, and it’s what carries people through the version of this event that happens after they go home, when the crowd isn’t there and the doubt is.

It’s not about him being in Empower. It’s about Empower being in you.

That line, delivered to Mark once he’s finally allowed to sit down and stop shaking, is the whole session compressed into one sentence. The company, the products, the stage, none of it does the work for you. What you’re actually here to collect is something internal, portable, the kind of thing that survives the drive home and the conversation with the people who still think this is a phase.

So what do you actually do with everything about to come at you?

This is the question every first-timer is quietly panicking about, and Mark asks it out loud for all of them: how much information is coming, can I retain it, when do I get a break, am I going to be able to use any of this once I leave. The answer given on stage isn’t a productivity system. It’s simpler and more useful than that.

Write about what actually makes you happy. Don’t force content about a topic you don’t care about just because it seems more “business.” Take pictures. Meet the leaders standing around you instead of scrolling past what everyone else is posting. Do the interviews. That’s the raw material. But there’s one condition attached, and it’s the difference between a hobby blog and an actual business:

“The key is to write about what makes you happy, but you got to have a call to action.” Passion without a next step for the reader is just a diary. A call to action turns the same honest writing into something that moves someone else to act, which is the entire mechanism this whole weekend is built around: content that’s genuinely yours, pointed at a real next step.

That’s the real assignment for the rest of the event, and honestly for the rest of your career doing this. Capture what’s actually happening to you, in your own words, and never forget to ask for something at the end of it. The forces working against you didn’t disappear when the skit ended. They’re still there. What changes is that now you know their names, and you know what to do instead of freeze.

Once upon a time, not too long ago, in a land not too far, far away, there was a mighty kingdom called Empowerland. Empowerland was inhabited by people of all ages and races who shared one solid dream, to have the freedom to live whatever life they wanted. Some wanted the freedom to travel the world. Some wanted big mansions.

Some wanted fancy cars. Some wanted money so they could take care of what matters most. But they all wanted to help others who weren't living the lives they'd always dreamed of. Empowerland was led by two strong, smart, brave, positive kings.

Those kings loved their people and would do anything to help them live the lives of freedom and opportunity. They believed everyone had the opportunity. They believed everyone had the ability to create whatever life they desired. And so they supported the people of their kingdom by creating new systems with new tools, giving them everything they needed to succeed.

There was so much joy in the land, but as we all know, in every tale, there's always bad that comes with good. Outside the gates of Empowerland lived huge communities of people who were mostly selfish. They were suffering through life. Their dreams, hopes, and desires felt so far away that they couldn't reach them.

But it wasn't all their fault. There were forces that would weigh down the dreams of these people. These forces of evil would permeate their thoughts until every last bit of hope had escaped. And sometimes these forces of evil would even find its way into the kingdom of Empowerland.

And so our story, begins to unfold. Wait for me. Wait for me. This is it.

Oh, it's kind of dark in here, Mom. Mom, really, seriously. Mom, sit down. Just sit down.

No, no, no. I can help you. No, I don't need help, Mom. I can do this.

I'm not in the basement anymore. Okay? Tell me what to do. I got this.

This is what I'm wearing, Mom. I already put it on. You saw me put it on in the room. Well, why didn't you put on that beautiful little outfit I laid out for you?

You don't have the training. You didn't finish school. Your degree was leather work, needlepoint, with a minor in Mayan pottery. You should have done something sensible, Mark.

Follow the system. Work hard, nine to five, for somebody else in a cubicle with a window that a gerbil couldn't squeeze through if he was greased. That is the system, Mark. And then one day, one day, just before you shuffle off this mortal coil, you will have a happy, happy couple of weeks of retirement.

For that, my friends, is the system, the perfect system of society, the way it always has been. You know what? The way it always will be. Am I right?

No. No. You bunch of slacker hipsters. Listen.

It doesn't have to be that way. You know what? I love my bracelets. My bracelets are positive.

Your bracelets will not make you anything, Mark. This idea you have of forming your own company, getting a blog, a website, a sales system, to sell things you make yourself, it's nonsense, my friend. It's nonsense. Go back to playing hacky sack and riding a one-gear bike.

No. That's why I'm here. I'm going to learn about it. I'm going to get support.

I'm going to see if I can actually do it. Really? Oh, come on! Do it!

Really? That's the whole point of this? You don't want to work 11 hours a week. You'd rather do something for yourself and then…

I do want to work. I want to work on my passion. That's what I want to work on. It's not about passion.

Systems, he was spot on. He said to me, he said something that really rang true. Those little bracelets you made, they're really, they're spiffy. Yeah, thanks, Mom.

I'm going to go all the way with them because they say have a nice day. They really encourage people. People like them. I just need to get bigger.

Yeah, about that. I'm thinking that you really should think and take Uncle Alfred and your dad's advice and work at the Fuller Brush Store. I mean, really, think of it. You could have a nine-to-five.

You could have two weeks vacation, and that way you could have a car, and you could have a nice Winnebago. Mom, but that's not what I want. Oh, it's not about you. No, dear, no.

You've got to take care of everything. Mom, listen, listen. If I want to take care of you, I mean, what if this kicks off? What if I learn so much here that I can take it to the next level?

Mom, I want to be able to take care of you. You've taken care of me. Well, I know, but you know what? I support you.

I support you like my girdle, and I want you to know. I want you to know in front of everyone here, I stand by you, and when you fail, you can come back and live in the basement, okay? Thanks, Mom. You're welcome.

12 hours of labor. I mean, really, look at him. He's like a cow. It saddens me to say that Mark's mom has been infected by foe number one, the system.

She bought into everything he had to say, and by believing in the system, she herself turned into a foe. Foe number two, well-intended friends and family. Mark was not perfect. He was not prepared for the lack of confidence and support by his mom, so he allows self-doubt to creep in, turning him into foe number three, you, yourself, your internal being.

I think I can do this. Yeah? What are you going to do, huh? How are you going to figure all this stuff out?

I can do it. I can figure this stuff out. Oh, you're going to be the next millionaire. Oh, I got bracelets.

They got little positive sayings on them. Have a nice day. Be happy. Don't worry.

Be happy. I'm not trying to be a millionaire. I just want to work on my passion. Passion smashing.

What are you going to do? Listen, you're bit off too much. More than you can chew, man. Calm down.

No, I think I can do this. Stop it. No, you can't. You can't.

In fact, what kind of blog are you going to make? I'm you and you're boring. All right. Get a life.

In fact, we're really close to the Magic Kingdom. Go right into small world. No, I'm going to stay and I'm going to try. Look at you.

You know, I, I, I was thinking about your name and it's my dad's name, you know. And when I was when I was like twenty seven or twenty eight, I remember is at my parents house actually working on the Internet, failing. And I just got out of living in a van because I've been homeless. And then I moved into my parents house.

That's where I live now. Yeah, yeah, I feel you. I feel you. It's fun.

I remember my mom was like she came up to me and my mom actually does believe in me. But, you know, she said, you know, Dave, we help you go to college if you want. And I was this close to just like quitting and going and working at Starbucks or something, just saying, screw this truth. And I remember one night I was I was about broken and almost quit.

This is like right before September 2009. I'd made fifteen dollars in a whole month. And it was like for twelve hour days for like a month. Anybody here know what that's like?

You know, and then what I did was something different. I I found just a little bit of belief in myself. I reached down inside, Mark, and I started to believe. And I'm glad I did, because what happened was next month I made three grand next month, one night I made twelve grand.

I made that month about thirty grand third month. And I just needed to just hang in there. A little bit longer. So here's what's actually going to happen.

I've been screaming so much, I almost lost my voice already. This is cool. So, we're gonna get right into this. But first off, I mean, I don't know about you, but I was falling out of my chair watching that skit backstage.

It was the coolest thing ever. So, I want to give a quick shout out to Bonnie, who was coordinating that with the whole team and the Empower Network internal team to put that whole thing together for you so that we can have the most awesome welcoming ever. Any leader and any producer knows that they have to fight them and they don't just fight them once. You learn how to fight them and you keep fighting them. And what keeps leaders fighting for the hearts and souls of entrepreneurs over and over again? Because they know it lights people up and when they can light that flame inside of your hearts, that's when the magic begins.

So, what we have for you, we have not waited. We usually talk about saving the best for last. We do have one of the best for last, too, but we decided to give you one of the best first. Y'all all right with that?

So, who I'm about to bring up is somebody that I see as a leader that has conquered those foes over and over again and understands what it takes to keep fighting. So, I want to give a shout out to Bonnie. Thank you. She is fighting and fights for you.

She is an amazing mother that also has an amazing ability to teach and train and produce all at the same time. She deserves to be on this stage and be welcomed in the greatest way possible. Please give, get on your feet and give it up for Ms. Tracey Walker.

Empower Network Royalty. Is everyone hyped? One thing that I totally love about Empower Network is the spontaneity of this group and the creativity. And I believe that our founder, David Wood, as well as the entire leadership, as well as the staff, they do their best to help each of us bring out our own creativity to create or to have created a platform that allows us to speak our own voices, our own truths, our own minds.

And to share that with the world. Oh, come on. What do you mean creativity, your own voices, doing it yourself? You work for a corporation, for people that know what they're doing, that have done it for years, the way it always has been.

I was part of the system in real life. I was part of the system. I have a master's degree. I went to business.

I went to school. Yes. Right? And I still get loans from you.

Are you going to pay those loans? Yes. Probably not. So I acquired all this debt to work in an industry where I couldn't even get a job.

Then when I got the job, I get laid off. You know why I get laid off? Because I had a master's degree, and the more degrees you have, the more money you require or you request, right? So when it's time for companies to downsize, get them.

When it's time to downsize, guess who the first group of people are to go? All you people with all those good degrees. So the degree does you nothing, and I am not saying that if you have a degree that it's useless. What I'm saying is that if you are not working in an area where your degree is required and you're actually gaining the fulfillment in your life with that degree, it's a piece of paper.

It's a piece of paper that can disconnect you from everything, and I found myself being laid off with nowhere else to turn. So you know how I feel about the system? Yeah. I don't need to stay here and take that sort of abuse.

Beat it. There are plenty other places I can go. Kick rocks. So, before I was rudely interrupted by the man in the shiny shirt.

It's a nice shirt. So like I was saying. Excuse me. Our company.

Well, I like to gallivant during my time that I like to gallivant. See, I get to choose because I get to stay at home with my son. See, I don't have to gallivant in this little system with a little job with that man that you're talking about. I get to make my own rules, mom.

I get to work my own hours, mom. And guess what? My son gets to come to every event right with me. And guess what else?

I've got a nanny, I can pay for that. I can pay for the food. I can pay for the suite, the executive suite that I'm in. I can pay for us to rent cars and travel all around Disney World.

And I don't need a longer shirt. I like this one. Shut the front door. Now, some of you guys may experience people that you love and that you care about and they have the best intentions.

But unfortunately, they were trained by people who did not know your potential. And as a result, they teach you to be mediocre. They teach you to be mediocre. They teach you to be mediocre.

They teach you to live here when you deserve to live here. They teach you to follow rules that are rules that are made to do what? Make them happy. There are no rules.

The rules that you should live by are the rules that make you happy so long as they're legal, ethical, and moral. Shouldn't hurt anybody. And you shouldn't hurt yourself by pretending that you belong in a box. Many people say think out of the box.

I say get rid of the box. There is no box. There is no box. So, before I was interrupted, again, by these forces, as I was saying.

So, you've got Dave Wood. You've got Chris Jones. You've got all the wonderful people who had Empower Network. Tracy, I'm sorry.

I'm sorry. It's Mark again. I'm sorry. Dave told me to stay.

I wrote down, you know, get rid of the box, right? But I got my, I'm ready to fight the forces of evil. And there's a lot of pages in here. I'm worried about content.

My pen already ran out of ink, so I'm just wondering, like, how much content? Can I handle the content? Can I, when I leave, do I do the content on my own? Do I, do I have help?

I mean, what's going on? Is it too much? Will I overload? Do I need some more eggs and bacon?

Do I need more protein? When do I get a break? When is lunch? When am I going to do all that stuff?

How much, how much information will be coming at me that I can write down, remain, retain, and all that stuff? Can I tweet? I can't film anything. I know I can't film.

I cannot film. Because if you film, you have a compliance issue. Yeah. We love compliance, don't we?

So, so, yeah, you know, can I handle the content that will be coming to me? Come here, Mark. Let me help you. Okay, because right now I'm, I'm stressing out.

I'm going to have to go back to my mom's basement. I'm shaking a little bit. You know, sometimes she'll bake the brownies for me. I, they get two brownies at VIP.

I only got one brownie. So I, should I crawl up here? I don't know if I can. Yeah, yeah, just go ahead.

Come on. I'm just a little nervous right now. Just crawl on up, Mark. It's all good.

Just kind of roll up here. Okay. Your shirt is short. It's, there are a lot of things happening right now.

It's not about him being in Empower. It's about Empower being in you. In me. Yes.

Okay. If you want to talk about the experience that you had today with your forces of evil, write about that. If you want to write about your bracelets, write about that. The key is to write about what makes you happy, but you got to have a call to action.

Don't get so caught in the passion that you don't have no call to action, because then you don't have to make no money. And then you sitting up and hit the next event like Mark. So write about what you want to write about. Take it slow.

Meet the leaders. Take pictures. Do interviews. That's content.

When you do those videos and you post them on your blog, other people get to see what you're experiencing, even your little, you know, flipped-haired, knucklehead mom. She's kind of crazy. Yeah, she's special. I'm sorry about that.

That's okay. But what I want you to know is that everybody in this room has experienced some of the similar things that you've experienced, and you're no different than any of us. Some of us have just been at this a little bit longer, so we've just learned how to handle it. And our goal is to help you handle it, because we want you at every event.

We want you on the stage. We want you with one of these rings on, don't we? And so, Mark, I believe in you. Thank you.

Pretend we had a Jay-Z, Beyonce concert. Put your phones in the air, wave them like you just don't care, okay? And I want you to use them. Stop looking out, stop getting on Facebook looking at what other people are posting.

Get on Facebook because you're posting content. You're posting something. Last night, there were people that made posts. Some videos at Ronda Swann's costume party that got sign-ups last night because of the videos they posted last night.

So what I'm saying to you is that you are here to capture your own unique experience, but you're also here to capture the things that's taking place around you that help others to see what it's like to be on this side of the fence. There's hard work, but we have fun too. All right? So with that being said.
