Blog Headline Formulas That Actually Drive Traffic (Part 3)

David Wood tells the Empower Network room that Neil Patel is about to run them through a live blogging workout, not a lecture, and within minutes the entire audience is broken into clusters of ten, writing headlines on scraps of paper while Patel walks the floor correcting them one at a time. The premise he gives them is blunt: a thousand visitors a day is not a hard number to hit, and the way to get there starts with a formula for headlines that most people get wrong on the very first attempt.

Small numbers signal ease, big numbers signal value

Patel opens by asking the room to recall the seven headline rules from the day before: negative words, six words, 65 characters, odd numbers, matching content to headline, multiple meanings, interesting adjectives. Then he corrects a pattern he is seeing across almost every group: people defaulting to three, five, or seven when the topic calls for something bigger.

Make sure your numbers are at least as small as seven, and it can go all the way up to like 101. Anything more than 101 is too many.

His reasoning is that a small number like three only works when the promise is effortlessness, not thoroughness. He points to a woman’s headline about losing ten pounds and tells her three simple steps to losing 10 pounds in one month works because three signals easy. But when the subject is tips, techniques, or ways to gain value, a small number reads as thin. “There’s not really three ways,” he says of one attendee’s draft, “there’s a lot of ways.” He walks a man through fixing “3 Best Kept Secrets to Monetize Your Passions” by swapping three for seven, then rebuilding the whole headline around the real problem, which is that most people don’t know what they’re passionate about in the first place.

He also reminds the room they don’t need to hit all seven rules on every post. “If I got slapped every time one of my headlines didn’t meet one of those seven points, I probably wouldn’t have any more skin on my face.”

Vague headlines get skipped, specific ones get clicked

Case after case, Patel pushes attendees away from broad claims toward something concrete and personal. A man writing about baby boomers’ fears of online marketing gets told his headline works precisely because it’s specific. A woman writing “17 Strategic Ways to Score Higher Than 25 on the ACT” gets praised once she reveals she personally scored in the 95th percentile and won seven full scholarships, a detail Patel says must be in the post.

Other headlines get rebuilt from scratch. A dog trainer’s “11 Extremely Positive Dog Training Techniques to Get Ahead This Year” becomes, in Patel’s version, “You Won’t Be Able to Train Your Dog Unless You Do This First,” once she explains that foundational behavior training has to come before any trick. A toddler potty-training post gets reframed around money instead of speed once Patel learns diapers cost parents real money over time: “If you think you can get a child trained earlier… how to save $1,500 on diapers.” He is upfront that he’s guessing at the number and has no children himself, but the exercise, he says, is about angle, not precision.

A blogger’s “27 Reasons Why Your Blog Isn’t Making Money” gets flipped to lead with the problem instead of the number: “Your blog’s not going to make money, and here are 27 ways to fix that.” Another attendee’s “11 Reasons Why You Won’t Succeed Online” gets rebuilt around a statistic, Patel suggesting he find data on the real failure rate of online businesses and open with something like 99 percent of online businesses fail, here’s how to be in the one percentile.

Not every fix is subtle. When a woman pitches a headline about hiring women CEOs, Patel suggests flipping it into deliberately controversial territory, “Here’s why you shouldn’t hire a woman,” while noting he doesn’t personally believe it. “You’ll probably get a shitload of traffic,” he tells her.

The introduction needs a question, a story, and a transition

Once headlines are drafted, Patel moves the room into introductions with a fixed structure: open with a question, write no fewer than two paragraphs and no more than three, keep paragraphs as short as one or two sentences or as long as six lines, use the words “you” and “I” repeatedly, and end with a transition line into the body of the post. He models it using the women-CEO headline, opening with a question about multitasking, citing a hypothetical Harvard Business Review statistic, then transitioning straight into “here are seven reasons why you should hire a women’s CEO.”

He tells the room the two mistakes he’s seeing most as he circles the tables. First, people are writing one dense paragraph instead of breaking it up. Second, and more important, people are stating advice without any personal story behind it. “Without that personal story, no one’s going to connect with you,” he says, arguing that loyal readers form around the writer as a person, not around the tips themselves.

The examples that follow show what changes when a story gets added. A man whose son missed a school cutoff by one week and ended up two grades ahead through virtual school gets told to drop the collective “we” for “I” and lead with his own experience rather than a general claim about public education. A woman writing about affiliate marketing failure gets her opening line sharpened from “How’s your affiliate marketing business going?” to something that names the pain directly: “Are you tired of generating no income from your affiliate business?” A woman describing her husband’s oil field job gets steered away from the phrase “death row,” since it implies wrongdoing, toward a guessing-game opening: “My husband has one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. Can you guess what it is?”

The clearest example of what he’s after comes from a woman named Nancy, writing about teenage safety, who reveals in her intro that she was sexually assaulted as a teenager and has spent thirty years teaching girls self-defense. Patel has the room stand and applaud her, then makes the point explicit.

She was very transparent within her introduction. When someone’s transparent like that, what does it make you actually want to do? Read it.

He tells her that even though he has no teenage daughter and no children at all, he would read the whole post. The lesson he draws is that shyness about past events, good or bad, works against the writer. Being open about it is what builds the connection that turns a one-time visitor into a returning reader.

Let's make sure we are ready to get focused and bring a level of intensity to blogging because Neil told me last night that the energy in this room and the audience in this room is the best audience he has ever spoken in front of. Neil is excited to be here and to share this with you to impact your businesses. Empower Network family, help me welcome Mr.

Neil Patel. Alright, they are all yours. Thank you. Are you guys ready? Thank you guys. So today, we are actually going to be doing something that is a bit different.

I want you guys to actually learn not only how to blog but to generate visitors to your site. So I remember some people here were saying you guys want 10,000 visitors a month, was that right? A thousand visitors a day. Those numbers actually are not hard to achieve and I'm actually going to show you how to achieve that. So the first half is going to be how to actually write content. The second half is going to be how to market the content.

So what I want you to do is everyone get into groups of 10. I know this is going to be, the room is going to change quite a bit, just get into little clusters of 10. And what I'm going to be doing, I'm going to first give you guys some overviews, then you're going to end up, I'm going to teach you guys how to write headlines, how to write blog content, and then after that the next whole half is going to be how to promote it. So everyone within your sections, get into small groups of 10s. If some people have odd numbers, it's okay. Go!

You can move chairs if you want. Everyone getting into the groups? Feel free to move around the chairs if you have to. If you have to do 11, that's fine as well. Don't worry if the numbers are a bit off. Just small groups, around 10 people, it could be plus or minus a few.

Alright, everyone in the group? Yes? Alright, now what I want is one person from every group to raise their hand. Just one person from each group. Alright, so we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Shit, I can't even count at this one.

Okay, there's enough of us. So the first exercise, okay, so is anyone not in a group? Raise your hand if you're not in a group. Perfect. Everyone's in a group. If you don't have 10 people in your group, it's okay.

You can have short or more, it doesn't matter. As long as there's like more than 6 or 7 in a group, you're fine. If you have, you don't need 2, you're good. If you have more than 6 or 7, you're fine. Alright, that's fine. Alright, so the first exercise, everyone listening?

Alright, so the first exercise I'm going to go over is how to craft a headline. Do you guys remember the main points that I discussed yesterday? There were 7 of them. Alright, what was the first one? Numbers are negative words, alright. Negative words and have numbers.

6 words in the headline. 65 characters is number 2. 6 words, odd numbers are better. Match the content is another one. Odd numbers is another one, we said that. Multiple meanings, there you go.

Interesting adjectives, there you go, so we got them. Okay, now whatever you guys blog on within your groups, I want you to come up with 3 headlines for your next blog post. Everyone should write that down. You can write it down on a piece of paper, you can type it on your computer, whatever you want. Write down 3 headlines, okay? Once you do that, share that with your group and everyone's going to get feedback.

On top of that, I'm going to be coming around from group to group and just giving you guys feedback as well. And we're going to go through this whole process. I'm going to actually even have you guys start writing that blog post too on that piece of paper. So we're going to go over a bit of everything today. It's going to be quite a bit of work, but trust me, once you're done with this and then once we get into the promotion side, you'll actually start seeing a lot more traffic per blog post. Question, can I put the what?

Do you guys have my PowerPoint from yesterday anyway? You can put the headline slide, there's 7 points. Sounds good, they're going to do it. Any other questions? Everyone does their own subject and as a group, you guys got to be giving each other feedback. The whole purpose of this is to create a buddy system.

There's 10 of you. You guys should know each other's names, each other's email address, each other's contact information. Why, you may ask? Because no matter how good you are at writing, you yourself are not going to have all the ideas in the world. Even me to this day, do you know every time I write a blog post, I brainstorm headlines with a few of my colleagues and they brainstorm their headlines with me? We all share concepts, ideas, headlines, et cetera.

This is what helps us become better writers. See this group that you have after this event doesn't stop. You need to continue with this group and you guys are going to help each other, not just with the headlines, but looking over each other's blog posts, giving each other feedbacks. You're going to be taking the stuff you're learning today and help each other. If you do that, all of you guys will have a much more popular blog. All right, let's get started.

Everyone start brainstorming headlines. I'm going to start coming around from group to group. All right, everyone working on headlines, raise your hand if you in your group have not created a headline. Raise your hand if you have not created a headline. You didn't create a headline? Okay, you did.

Anyone not create a headline? You did? What was that? Can everyone quiet down a bit, please? It could be the first one, so here's what we're going to do. There's a lot of you, so I'm going to start going over in front of everyone right now so that way we can all learn from this versus only individuals within your group.

One thing, when you guys are using numbers, I see a lot of you using like three, five, and numbers like that within your headline. Does that sound about right? Those numbers are too small. How would you want to write about three things or five things? Make sure your numbers are at least as small as seven, and it can go all the way up to like 101. Anything more than 101 is too many, okay?

Because if you go too small, everyone's going to be like only three, right? Remember we talked about yesterday you want to create a 2,000 word blog post? You can't create a 2,000 word blog post from three things. We need like seven, 10, 20. Yes, if you only have three and you can make it really thorough, then you could end up using the headline with the number three. But the purpose of three in small amounts like that, you don't want to use it as like three ways to become financially free because everyone's like there's not really three ways.

There's a lot of ways or three steps because you'd be like three ways because it's like bullshit, there's many more ways, right? When you want to use small numbers like three is more like, so like let's say you're trying to lose 10 pounds in one week. Three simple steps to losing 10 pounds in one month, right? So you want to use a small number to show that it's effortless. When you're talking about tips and techniques and how people can gain value, you don't want to use a small number. You don't want to use a larger number because it shows that there's more value.

Does that make sense? Perfect. You also do not have to achieve every one of those seven points. If I got slapped every time one of my headlines didn't meet one of those seven points, I probably wouldn't have any more skin on my face. All right? So don't try to achieve all of them.

Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to go around and just pick on random people and you're going to end up reading your headline and I'm going to critique it. And I'm hoping this helps you guys as a group learn from this. Sounds good? All right. You're raising your hand. Speak up.

Read your headline and I'll repeat. Eleven fabulous mobile blogging tips for beginners. That's good. It's kind of lengthy. Eleven fabulous tips, mobile blogging tips for beginners. So what do you mean by mobile blogging?

Okay. Okay. So what he's saying is he writes blog posts from his phone, uses the voice recognition. Now when you're doing this, how long does it take you to write a blog post? And we're from five to ten minutes. Okay.

So that's actually kind of amazing. So what I would actually do… Because I talk really fast, you know, and I can generate like 2,000 words in ten minutes. Shit. You should be up here instead of me. I never thought about that.

I will be. Next event. I never thought about that. And I've been blogging for like, I think over ten years. I'm like, damn it. That's what happens when you stick with old phones and you're on 3G.

You never think about that stuff. So what I would do is modify the headline. How you can write a 2,000 word blog post in ten minutes. Right? Because it's like, wait, how? And then you can break down how you can use your mobile phone…

How you can use your mobile phone to actually create that blog post. Sound good? Yeah. Yeah. Love it. All right.

Thank you. Next person. Right there behind you. My name is Terrence. And my headline is, 13 paralyzing fears baby boomers have about online marketing. That's a good headline.

I'm wondering what those fears are. Okay? I think that headline will work. And four, why it will work is he was really specific. When headlines are pretty broad, they tend not to work as well. 11 extremely positive training techniques to get ahead this year.

Dog training techniques to get ahead this year. Excuse me. Okay. So 11… Extremely positive dog training techniques to get ahead this year. Okay.

What do you mean by dog training techniques to get ahead this year? Well, dogs learn by behavior and association. Dogs learn by habit and association only. And a lot of people don't understand that. And so there's very important foundation that you have to kind of understand before you can even begin to teach them anything. Training is 24 hours a day.

And so with 11… So you're talking about before you actually even train your dog, they need to be doing so… I'm sorry. So I would actually modify the headline. It may be a bit lengthy and you can figure out how to shorten it, but it's something like you won't be able to train your dog unless you do this first. And then you can break down what it is and you can break down all the steps and you can talk about…

You can't just train a dog to give you a handshake. You have to create the foundation, et cetera, and go into… I don't know. I don't have an animal or a dog. But you get what I mean. Yes, completely.

Yes, thank you. Okay. I'll let you as a mic runner just keep running around and grab someone and you go to different groups. Five fastest ways to potty train your toddler. Okay. And the whole purpose of that is your potty…

Your toddler stops wasting diapers, et cetera. So when do most people get potty trained? What's the average age? I think 18 months, starting at 18 months. Okay. And through your methods, when do you think you can get someone potty trained?

It takes about three months in my experience to potty train, fully potty train. By what age do you think you can get them trained? By two and a half. Two and a half? Yeah. Damn.

You got to change diapers till two and a half. That sucks. That's the best form of birth control that I know. Four or five times a day, you shitting me? After a day of this shit. I'm definitely not cut out for kids.

All right. So that post on… Shit, how much do diapers cost? Like a dollar a diaper? A lot of money. What was that?

A lot of money. A lot of money. So what I would do is figure out how much diapers cost. And let's say diapers cost a total of like 500 bucks throughout a child's infancy, right? Yeah, right. Okay, like 4,000.

I don't know. I'm making a number. Kids are expensive. Yeah. Yeah, that's true. But that makes me happy.

Dirty divers don't make me happy. Okay. So I would talk about… If you think you can get a child trained earlier, I would actually create my blog post icon. Let's say you think you can save a parent an extra $1,500. And I would actually talk about how to save $1,500 on diapers or something like that, right?

The headline's not perfect. It needs to be fine-tuned. But I would work the angle of saving money. And you're talking about the reason you're spending a lot of money is you're not potty training your kid early enough. And you're not doing the right techniques to get them potty trained fast enough. On average, it's taking most parents six months to potty train their kid.

I'm going to show you how you can get it done in three months and how you can potty train your kid six months earlier than the average parent, right? And then go into that kind of stuff. By the way, I do apologize from a bit off because I have no idea if my potty training knowledge is on. I'm just following the mic runner. Right here. Hi.

But I'm not at work anymore. No, no, no. But you can write the blog post as when you were at work and how you didn't know and then you quit and you started doing this as your career. Is there something like how I made $4,000 while I was stuck in my cubicle not even knowing? Something like that? Yeah.

How I made $4,000? How I made $4,000 in passive income while I was stuck in a shit hole? Yeah, shit hole. Yeah. That would probably work. Cubicle pretty much is it, right?

And then I would go find a picture of a cubicle that looks like a shit hole. Or just a shit hole. Yeah, that could work too. Okay, thanks. I'm waiting for the mic runner wherever he's passing it around. Okay.

My topic here is three best kept secrets to monetize your passions. Okay. So remember what we said about number three? What's wrong with that number? Yeah, it's too low. So down below I put seven.

There you go. What's the title again? Use the number seven instead. Seven best kept secrets to monetize your passions. Seven best secrets to make money from your passion. So the problem with that post is most people, at least I feel in this world, don't know what they're passionate about.

Would you agree with that? Yeah. So I would actually do a blog post that's like something simple like seven ways to figure out what you're passionate about and then I would put in parentheses after that. It's a bit long, Helen, but it'll work. Seven ways to find out, seven ways to find what you're passionate about and how to actually make money off of it. Right?

Thanks a lot. So I put 11 reasons why you won't succeed online. 11 reasons why you won't succeed online. Yeah. So I would actually use this stat. Let's say it's like, I would assume 99 plus percent of online businesses fail and there's probably a stat that backs it up.

I would go Google and find a stat that talks about how 98 or 95 or 90 percent whatever the number is. And I would actually start off my headline on 90, like 99 percent of online businesses fail. Here's how to, and then the next part would be, here's how to be in the one percentile. Right? You may need some jazzing up but you get the point. The whole purpose is to talk about how most people are going to fail and here's how to avoid that.

Seven traffic accidents to avoid online. What do you mean by traffic accidents? And you're talking about how most people don't generate traffic because they mess up. So seven traffic can you repeat the title one more time for me? Seven traffic accidents to avoid online. Seven traffic accidents.

See, traffic accidents is a play on the phrase traffic accidents. And avoiding traffic accidents. But it has double meanings. That's the problem. Right. That's where the content comes in.

The content has to match the headline. Right? That's correct. But if people are already confused on the headline and what it's about, they won't read the content. So like, instead of the traffic accidents I would just go in and talk about stuck at the hundred or not getting more than not getting more than a thousand visitors a month to your blog, here's how to solve it. Something like that.

It's a bit long, you can shorten it up. But most people have the problem when they start a blog, they don't even get a thousand visitors. They may get it when they first start because they email all their friends and their buddies, as many of you guys know. But what happens after that? It dies down, right? So if you can teach people how to get over the hump, that'll work.

Alright, this is going to be the last one and then we're going to get and then we're going to get and then we're going to get into writing. Okay, women leaders make business thrive. Okay, so all you men are probably going to hate me in the room for this. Hopefully all you men are married to a woman so that way you can't hate me. So you're talking about women leaders in business, right? Yes.

So I would actually do something on like looking for a CEO to help your business grow. Here's why you should hire a woman. And then you can flip it around for men as well if you want to end up doing that. It'll probably create controversy and then you'll probably get a ton of women commenting but you'll get a shitload of traffic. Right? Like you can actually do like wanting your business to thrive.

Here's why you shouldn't hire a woman. And I'm not saying I believe in that. But I bet you'll get like 30,000 visitors. Yes. Alright. So now the next step that we're going to get into is actually writing the introduction.

You guys all have your headlines. If it's not fine tuned, it's okay. You can always fine tune it before you publish the post. What I want you to do is you start off your introduction with a question. It hooks people in. Okay?

Then from there you want to write no more than three paragraphs. No less than two paragraphs. Your paragraphs could be as short as one or two sentences. And they could be as long as six lines. Okay? Okay, I'll repeat that.

Now you guys have to go and start writing the introduction. The introduction for the headline you chose, if the headline's not perfect, it's okay. You can always fix the headline before you publish. But what you need to do with the introduction is start it off with a question. Have it no less than two paragraphs. No more than three paragraphs.

Four if you're feeling, you know, a bit, you know, happy or whatever you want to call it. You have, you just want to write more. Your paragraphs can be as short as one to two sentences. They can be as long as six lines. Okay? Stick within that rubric.

You also want to use the words you and I a lot. And at the end of your paragraph or your introduction you want to transition. Okay? Now, a transition, I'll actually work from everything top to bottom before you guys even get started. But a transition is, let's use the example of the women's CEOs, right? Want to grow your business?

Want to grow your business? Then you ought to hire a women's CEO. Okay? That's the example of a headline. So, the intro, I could start off the first question with, um, is there a lot going on in your business? Of course there is.

All businesses have to work on solving multiple problems at the same time. But you know what's interesting? Men aren't as good as multitasking as women are. Did you know that women can do five things at the same time efficiently while men can only do two things at the same time? Don't believe me. Check out this review or check out the, you know, statistics or the data behind this by Harvard Business Review.

And then you would link to the article because you can probably find some sort of article that backs up how women can multitask better. Right? And then after that I'm like here are seven reasons why you should hire a women's CEO to run your business. And that would do the semicolon. And then I would go into actually writing the main body. But for this point, we're just going to do the introduction.

Does that example make sense? Does it help you write yours? Alright. So everyone What was that? Do you want me to repeat it? Okay, you're joking.

Alright. And you got the transitions, right? You can see how some would be different paragraphs because they pause more. So, yeah, everyone start writing their introduction. Spend no more than five minutes writing a quick introduction. It doesn't have to be perfect.

And then read it along to other people within your group and I'm going to be coming around. Sound good? Get started. A few things that I've been noticing when I'm walking around. One, you can't have a one paragraph introduction. It needs to be at least two to three paragraphs.

A paragraph could just be one sentence if you wanted as I mentioned earlier. But do not make your introduction just one paragraph. That is, it's too big. It's hard to read. It all jumbles together, right? Break it up.

It helps with the flow. The second thing that I'm noticing with some of you guys is you're writing these introductions and you're just getting into you're talking about doing something like stretching or whatever it may be and why people should stretch. But if you're not tying in the personal experience on why or how you learned this or what happened to you when you didn't stretch etc. And how it changed your life and how other people can learn from it. Like without that personal story, no one's going to connect with you. The way you end up creating loyal blog readers is they end up connecting with you as an individual.

Right? You want people to come back to your blog. You want them to continue to read. You want them to comment. If people feel you're cold, they're not going to leave a comment. They're not going to connect with you.

So make sure you're adding something within the introduction that helps you connect with the reader. And that something is typically a personal experience or a story or something that happened to you in the past. The third thing I'm noticing is you guys aren't using the words you or I within your introduction. Remember how we talked about that yesterday? If you're not using the word you or I, people won't be connecting. So I'm going to give you guys another like five, six minutes to do a bit more.

And then what I'm going to end up doing is calling a few of you guys. We're going to read your introduction. We're going to show you how to fine tune it. Alright? Did you guys write your introduction? Anyone not write an introduction?

Raise your hand. Okay. A few of you have not written an introduction. Did you write an introduction? You did. That's good.

Okay. You wrote one? Don't be shy. I can help you if you didn't write one. You didn't write one? You got one.

Raise your hand if you did not write one. Not if you have a question but if you did not write one. Okay. Did everyone write one? Where? Okay.

You did not write one. Why not? Just couldn't get my thoughts together to write it down. What's your headline? Fifty-one keys to retire your way. So fifty-one keys to retire your way.

Keys is a weird word. I would have gone to like fifty-one tips or fifty-one strategies that will help you retire the right way. Okay. It makes it simpler. And are you retired? No.

Okay. But you have these ways to get retired, right? Yes. And when do you plan on retiring? Me? ASAP.

He would have only been able to go the following year. So now he's ahead? Yeah, he's in ninth grade now. So I would have talked about your experience within that introduction. So read off the introduction again. Paragraph by paragraph.

And then I would go into your story. And then I would be like… We were faced with this question when our son missed the cutoff for school by one week.

Instead of we, I would just say I. I was actually faced with this when my son wasn't accepted into public school. But what I ended up learning from this or when my son wasn't allowed in public school because I missed the deadline by one week. And then I would say but what happened next actually changed my life and that now allowed my son to be three years ahead of any other student within his class. And then I would go into just breaking down the benefits of virtual school and what it is. And I would also change the headline to be less about the evil of public schools.

I was trying to do the negative. Yeah, negative works too. You could actually keep the evil of public schools but it would be more like something like public school may not be the best route for your child or something like here's an alternative option or whatever, right? The headline needs work. But you get what I mean. Something that's inferring that there's another solution than public school.

one is finding an online business so tip number one be like tip colon or tip hashtag number one colon right and then I would list out what the tip is and then go into paragraph tip number two maybe live around other expats so tip hash pound sign two colon and then I would be like live next to other expats and then be like living by yourself isn't a good thing to do when you're living next to other expats share with you on how they're generating income and they can help you out and then go into where you can find other expats how to live next to them etc so all of that will help did you heading two heading three go with whatever looks good with your blog user want to use a heading one two or three it doesn't matter for SEO it's not like heading one has more emphasis than heading two or heading three google looks at it as font size so if the heading is bigger than the paragraph text that's fine if you're using a heading one and a heading two and a heading three all in the same blog post they will put more emphasis on the heading one because it's bigger in size but in general if you're not using other headings you can just use a h1 or h2 or h3 pick whatever one looks the hopefully you're not just blogging once if you blog once just don't even blog at all blogging once doesn't work I found that the main inflection point is you need at least 50 posts to do well 50, 5, 0 now that doesn't mean you should crank out 50 tomorrow because it's not going to work the same and we'll get into promotion tactics etc later on but when you're writing these posts over time content will change in which old posts could be modified you can click the update or publish again and save all the new stuff when you modify a post what you don't want to do is take that post put it on a different domain name and then you have two roaming around the internet that creates duplicate content but you need to update old posts as well because updating old posts will help you generate more traffic to the new ones as well older posts are typically more authoritative within google and the search engines do you guys get what I mean when I say that? ok so authoritative means when your content's been out longer it typically has more social shares has more backlinks more comments and because it's been around and aged a bit it ranks better you know how like some cheese when it's moldy people pay more for that shit? right? they really do I don't get why they charge me to eat mold but the same thing goes with blogging in which the older posts tend to age and as they age they rank better now the beautiful part with the blog posts as they get older at least you don't get sick from the mold right? it's not like cheese in that fashion so when you go into those older posts sometimes you actually may seem like when you're talking about internet marketing baby boomers and internet marketing right? let's say you wrote that blog post and you wrote a post a year ago that talks about setting up a website you can take that post about setting up a website and linking to the baby boomers article where it makes sense within that paragraph or whatever it may be that way you're driving some link juice from the old article into the newer article this will help you get your new post to get index faster in google and rank higher ok?

yes so you can go into your older posts you can modify them and link to your newer posts when it's relevant so if you wrote a post back in the day about setting up a website and your new post is on fears baby boomers have about internet marketing and the first point is setting up a website you can cross link them together that will help both of them rank better now when you're cross linking them sometimes you can put keywords in there but don't shove them you know the link has text you can make that text whatever you want you guys all know that right? now if you kept putting the word internet marketing in that link text what's going to happen? you're not going to rank for internet marketing because the search engines are going to be like hey haha I know what you're doing you're tricking us right? you're trying to manipulate they don't want anyone manipulating so instead make it flow in the old article if you put talking about like yeah setting websites isn't even that hard baby boomers can even do it right? and you can link the word baby boomers can even do it to the new posts you get what I mean right? that's a relevant text link that's cross linking that will help get your rankings much higher the next thing you need to end up doing is your content your blog post will start ranking within google okay?

you can use google analytics or any what do you guys mean these analytics google? okay in google analytics when you go under traffic sources in the left side you can end up clicking search engines and keywords and it will show you the keywords you are ranking for right? some of them will show not provided and that's fine because google has this privacy policy thing which if someone's logged into google they won't show you the keywords but a lot of your visitors won't be logged into google so you'll see the keywords that they're clicking on to get over to your website then what you do is you take those keywords and you put it in google when you put it in google and you scroll down at the bottom of that page what will you see? related keywords if any of those related keywords are related to your blog post you can blend them in what I mean blend is don't just add them because you want to add it make sure it makes sense if it doesn't make sense don't add it at all this will start helping you rank for those keywords as well why? because those keywords are considered long tail keywords and what are long tail keywords easier to do for? that's correct don't always go after the head terms did you know most blogs get most from long tail keywords?

don't do it you don't really have to do it if your blog post is on internet marketing you're probably naturally going to have the word internet marketing in your headline if it's on internet marketing you're probably going to mention the phrase internet marketing or online marketing or words that are related to it within the first paragraph right? so it's like don't really worry too much about keywords when you're writing 2000 word articles you'll naturally mention long tail keyword phrases and other terms that you can rank for etc you don't have to bust your butt to try to figure out keywords trust me I don't do it it's a pain in the butt I haven't done keyword research and I don't even know how long I just write and when you write trust me you can end up getting traffic for it ok so now let's talk about social media so now you guys got keywords you guys figured out how to cross-ink you already know how to do the titles you know how to write your content there's not much more that you actually need to do within your blog post you're writing the headlines you have to write conclusions we didn't discuss conclusions now conclusions needs to wrap up the main post as I discussed yesterday some people they'll go to your blog what's the first thing they do? they scroll down they're reading the conclusion if your conclusion doesn't summarize what your post is going to be about and it's not attractive then most people aren't going to actually read the rest of your post and at the end of the conclusion what should you be asking? a question why do you want to be asking a question? to get more comments that question should it be bolded? no it should be that's right alright so now we got all that away you guys know how to monetize too because you're linking within your content videos, your funnels etc, correct?

I heard a lot of no's add each other as friends you guys will now have extra thousand friends and you know the beautiful part about it is I bet you when one of your friends posts a blog post what are you guys going to do? share that's the most important part reading is not the most important part sharing is why? because it will help drive more traffic there's a ton of you guys you guys should be friends it's not that hard if you guys really don't connect outside of this event you guys are making one of the biggest mistakes we do that in our company and everyone's like friends and have over 100 employees my posts get a lot of likes and the funny thing is when I ask some of my co-workers I'm like you liked that post? was it good? I'm like I didn't read it I just liked it for you I'm like that's all that matters just like and share so do that is there mpower network fan page? there must be a lot of fans on there right?

200,000? that's still a lot you can't have 20,000 friends I've been kept at 5,000 for years or else I'd have way more Facebook traffic but out of those 20,000 fans hit up other people on there add them as a friend seriously add them as a friend you add 10, 20 people a day as a friend and chat on their wall all that kind of stuff that will help you get more traffic then when you post your content on your Facebook wall what will happen? you'll get more traffic if you do this if you have at least 2,000 friends you can easily drive 2-500 visitors every time you share something on Facebook as long as your friends a lot of them are other people who are interested in blogging, marketing, etc they like more than anyone else make sure you connect with other marketers that's everyone in this room that's all you have to do twitter there's this program called justfollow that's what I was thinking justfollowers there's justunfollowers too yeah and it allows you to add other friends that's the one I'm talking about so what you should be doing justunfollow yes just u-n-f-o-l-l-o-w okay justunfollow then when you go to justunfollow you can add friends I would add 2-300 new friends on twitter every single day yeah 2-300 you can start off with 100 if you don't want to do 2-300 you'll be the most popular person in your social group yeah, that's awesome, right? you're like, check out how many friends I have okay, so when you do this you follow them a portion of them will follow you back and it's not just anyone, you're following other people related to other members so you can look at other members like jcron right, and you can follow everyone that's following him right, a lot of those people markers, you can look at people around this room see who's following them with that program and then start following back when you do that you'll start getting a lot of followers when you get a lot of followers what you'll notice is that a large portion of them 80-90% won't follow you back but that's okay because after a week or two you unfollow the people that didn't follow you back when you're unfollowing do not follow more people at the same time just be patient and slowly unfollow don't unfollow everyone within one day don't unfollow more than a few hundred people in a day if you do this and you paste it out and you wait at least 2-3 weeks before you unfollow you'll be fine, twitter doesn't mind but the moment you unfollow everyone right away they will try to like they don't penalize but they temporarily suspend your account for like a day or two or a week so you gotta be careful and take it slow and easy by doing that you'll get a lot of twitter fans now when you do that in twitter when you end up tweeting out a link how many visits do you think you'll get once you start hitting 5,000, 10,000 twitter followers what do you think you can easily get with the retweets and everything like that 500 plus visitors per post that's a lot of visitors no just think about if you can get 500 from facebook 500 from twitter, what does that do for you that's a thousand visitors right there does that change the game of your blog that's a lot more visitors it's not that complex it's that easy you guys are smart you can do it now take linkedin what do you think are we gonna share a post on our profile page that sounds great right we'll get a lot of traffic from that no we don't have you guys tried it I've tried it it sucks with linkedin sharing on your fan page doesn't do that well but sharing on groups is exceptionally well how many of you guys are part of any linkedin groups decent amount of you how many of you share your post on those groups not that many of you that's good how many groups are you part of five that's it you're gonna be part of at least 20, 30 okay and then participate on those groups you don't just submit your links you leave comments you like other people's stuff that way when you do submit other people's links there's a good chance there's a good chance some of those links will get approved then when you want to submit your own post there's a better chance it'll approve your own post and when you submit your post to linkedin group submitting it to one won't help much you gotta submit it to at least 20 that's right to zero if you do that and I've done it for a b2b post sometimes those linkedin groups I've gone all the way up to 20,000 visitors in one post now that doesn't happen that often but what does happen is I'm easily generating 200, 300 visitors every time I do that if not up to like 600, 700 visitors that's not too bad for just sharing other people's groups you want to blog about baby boomers and marketing there's a lot of marketing groups like the social media channel that has I think like 200,000 followers on the linkedin group it's not hard to find some of these groups that's how you generate traffic from linkedin you don't need to do much more than that to actually get traffic on linkedin now we got the social media landscape covered now when you're writing posts do you just link to yourself no you want to link to other relevant blogs outside blogs that google may end up saying is relevant if they do that and these blogs are somewhat popular not popular but they're just in your space and they're good your readers will be like oh this is a cool link and google would be like oh if this site also ranks really well and your blog keeps linking out to it and other relevant blogs in that space they'll see you as similar so if they talk about dog food they'll be like well your blog must be about dog food and animals it'll also help your blog rank higher that's one of the main things that most people don't do that hurts their google traffic you don't have to shove in 20, 30 links to other blogs if you're writing a thousand word post you should be linking out at least three blogs it's roughly once every 333 words that's just like a general rule of thumb it can be more it can be less but that's generally what you want to do now when you link out to these blogs you link out to three or four or five you're going to end up hitting them up after and you email them so what's your name there sir with the baby boomers idea Steve was it Terrence sorry about that so Terrence let's say I link to Terrence in one of my blog posts and I think Terrence's blog is awesome so I link to it and I also want him to give me some love so I would actually email Terrence and I'd be like because your email is on your blog right Terrence people can talk to you alright that's good I'd be like hey Terrence I gotta say I'm a big fan of your blog and I'll put in your blog name what's your blog name okay so my subject line of the email is Terrence I love you dot dot dot and it would be all lowercase lowercase emails are more like friendly they're going to get open more and then I'd be like oh don't worry Terrence I don't love you I love your blog right I've been reading work with Terrence for X amount of months or whatever weeks and I gotta say it's some of the best content that I've read on the web it's so good that I actually link to you from my latest blog posts if you can it would be a real honor to me if you can check it out and just let me know what you think if you like the post feel free to just share it on Twitter or Facebook or even link to it if you follow that email template when you email everyone out that you link to you'll actually get more tweets and shares then when you're linking out to other sites you can target them who's the popular sites in your space they're much more likely to actually tweet out and link to you and when they do it's going to drive way more traffic than if you link to someone who has very little to no authority you like that tactic you going to use it you going to use it on me no no no no I hate when people use it on me I get those like almost every other day now and they're like I'm your biggest fan but like Terrence and I'm like Terrence didn't I just meet you at this conference the other day and he's just like no no no that was someone else okay so I'm going to teach you another one that works really well okay again don't use this on me so guest posting are you guys all familiar with guest posting no no guest posting is there's other blogs out there okay Forbes huffington post entrepreneur tech crunch ink astrology.com there's blogs in every niche out there wouldn't you want your name to be on one of those sites and more importantly a link back from one of those sites have you ever been blogged on one of these major publications no alright I'm going to teach you how so number one what do you want to blog on these publications what do you do you hit up the editor right yes no no of course you don't if you hit up the editor if you hit up the editor they get hit up by a ton of people what do they usually do if they get hit up by like 50 people a day delete or ignore or spam that's the worst one but all these blogs are so big they have a ton of writers right and how do they make their money advertising how do they make more money off of ads more traffic because they need more traffic what does that mean how do they get the traffic more blogs more content equals more traffic so in essence for you to blog on their blogs they will love you they want to have you their problem is they get hit up by so many people who want to blog they can't figure out who sucks and who's good so we're going to actually solve this problem for them you are going to pick three main blogs within the vertical that you are targeting big blogs like the huffington post etc the cnn's whatever it may be go find editors go find I mean not editors go find three contributors guest contributors they label them they label them as like senior editor contributor etc you want to go find the contributors contributors are just random people contributing so you're finding three blogs and three contributors per blog that's nine people in total that you're dealing with so let's say let's say the first person his name is Jason and let's say he blogs at Forbes and I'm trying to blog about business and stuff like that I would actually say I would find some posts that he has written and I'd be like hey Jason I just wanted to know let you know that your blog post on Forbes is really educational I've learned a lot from it and don't just say I've learned a lot from it you then need to give them one or two points of what you learned like to pay you back I actually wanted to give you some feedback on your post did you know if you talk about X Y and Z it would even help your readers even more you're now not just kissing their tushy you're now giving them feedback giving them feedback is totally different than just kissing their tushy why is that because if you kiss their tushy all day you're another fan if you give them feedback it helps them learn from you improve as a person and they're going to actually respect you for it it almost evens the playing field in which they see you as a peer versus a student so you need to give them feedback and you know what the chances are Jason's going to reply saying thank you for the feedback it was helpful next time Jason writes a post or right when he responds you say hey Jason on a side note have you ever thought about blogging on X Y and Z topic I think that will also be relevant to your audience your readers I haven't seen you blog on that and you can use a tool called Buzzsumo B-U-Z-Z S-U-M-O have you guys heard of Buzzsumo you just put in a keyword in there and it'll show you what's popular in that niche so if you put in internet marketing it'll show you all the most popular internet marketing posts from the last year now you don't want to tell them to copy another post but you can come up with a headline that's somewhat similar and be like hey have you ever thought about blogging on this because the chances are that headline will do really well and if Jason accepts it he'll blog on it he'll probably thank you after he writes a post even if he doesn't at least you give him a suggestion Buzzsumo B-U-Z-Z S-U-M-O.com then you would want to wait a week before you email Jason again after the week you just catch up with Jason and be like hey Jason I was reading this post of yours and I figured out that you left out A B and C because there's always something that could be expanded on just want to let you know still love the post thought was awesome great content you know keep cranking and you'll probably say thanks and then I would also end that post with or email to him with PS I also tweeted out or PS I almost tweet I also tweeted out your blog post what is he going to say oh why'd you tweet out my content I hate you never happens he'll be like ah thanks dude you tweeted out my content maybe I'll get some more traffic you're now building a relationship with Jason then what I'd do at the end I would send him one more email I would wait like a few more days like hey Jason hopefully all the feedback I've given you was really useful on your post you know if you want more just let me know I had a quick question for you you've been writing for Forbes for a while now and I think I also want to do the same right I really look up to you and I want to follow in your footsteps do you think you can introduce me to your editor at Forbes you just flattered him you're like I want to follow in your footsteps you're putting him on a pedestal if he doesn't introduce you he's a prick they usually do introduce you like I think I get over 50 60 percent success rate and you have to keep in mind I'm emailing these people they have no clue who I am they're not Googling or any of that it works extremely well that's why I'm now blogging on Inc, Forbes entrepreneur Business Insider there's a lot more too Fast Company like there's a ton of magazines I'm blogging on all from this one tactic it works just don't use it on me seriously yes the first step is you put a private email you don't even have to comment if you comment and you want to take more time commenting that's even better they're going to see your name and sometimes what I do is like I would go find their articles tweet them I would go at reply them on Twitter so that way they're starting to see your name emails tend to happen within the first few days 30 emails within after 7 days 4th email is when you ask for the introduction that's a week after the 3rd email so roughly 2 weeks the reason you have to spread it out is if you ask for too much early on it doesn't work out cause they know that you want an introduction and there's nothing wrong with asking my mom used to always tell me if you don't ask you'll never receive just keep asking even when they say no I just ask again in a different way it works really well you know how I raised my first million dollars I asked the guy who said no I asked him again do you really want to hear that story I was starting out my first software company it was called crazy egg it was a heat map analytics where we show you where people click on your website now I went around and I thought I had this genius idea I was going to be rich we had people from companies like tech crunch mashable and all these blogs were writing about it and even some of them were like wow this is an amazing product companies like google should acquire it like they were writing that in the blog post and we actually got hit up by some of these large companies these fortune 100 businesses that were just like hey we're interested in your business right I'm like yes I'm at the top of the world next thing you know none of them ended up buying us and I was losing money I was living with my mom and dad still at the time they supported me love them to death for it they paid for my grocery bills actually I just ate their food they paid for gas although technically I had my dad's credit card so he paid for the gas without me asking and I borrowed his car so I was like you know what I need to make money from this I don't see me making money anytime soon so I decided to go on the road and pitch VCs I was like only like 22, 23 at the time I had a ball of these investors and I'm like I got this next idea it's a billion dollar idea I was full of myself and I was just going to these investors I'm like hey you know invest in this business invest in this business it's awesome give me a check and I kept asking so many I went to like 20 of them now here's the mistake I made these investors talk to each other so if a few say no what happens they all figure out that someone's saying no it's like herds so the moment 5 or 10 of them say no all of them are probably going to say no and then you're just shit out of luck so one of the venture firms that said no was an investment fund called True Ventures they're actually very entrepreneurial friendly and they've been great to us ever since and they just said hey I just don't think we're ready to invest in this we're not a good fit they didn't just drag it out they're really nice they gave us a no a year later we kept developing and proving on it I decided to stay with my mom and dad still technically I didn't decide to stay I just didn't have a choice because I had no money and what ended up happening was after a year I'm like I've learned a lot as an entrepreneur I've made more mistakes so I went back and I started pitching more investors now we went back to True Ventures and they actually said yes now I learned a trick and one of our investors Tony Conrad actually taught me he said Neil no doesn't mean no no just means not right now and they said hey you've developed a lot we're willing to take a risk on this here's a million dollars and if it works out we'll give you more money and I learned a few things in that process one introductions are very valuable instead of going back to them and just saying hey invest in us I found another entrepreneur that was in their portfolio because these guys all list their investments on their websites kind of like logos you know like everyone's doing like logo porn they're doing investment porn so we started hitting up some of their portfolios you know you get introduced to them or you get to build a relationship just like I'm doing with blogging like the Forbes that tactic and I'm hitting people up building a relationship they're like yeah I think what you're doing is great let me introduce you to my investor at True Ventures because if True Ventures or any investment firm already invested in someone and that person says hey you should look at this startup the investor is much more likely to take it serious versus just a cold email and that helped us also get a yes as well so that's how I got my first million bucks from outside capital on a side note I lost it all I really did I burned through it but they're nice enough to give me I think another four million or something after investors are nice once you get some of their money so with marketing if you use the guest posting and you use the Twitter the Facebook tactics you'll actually see a lot of traffic now the biggest problem that I see is if you really don't connect with other people within this room it's not going to end up working out you can't just expect to get tons of visitors back to your blog to your website without building that network that network is the key think of this Empower Network where would empower be without the network without you they know this too where would they be nowhere right where would you guys be without them you guys need each other it's a relationship the same thing is with these social sites they need you to connect to more people so you use the social sites you need more connections because it helps you drive more traffic you need to network just like you're doing in here you need to do that online as well it really does drive a lot of traffic if you do those things you will get more traffic to your blog now I think there are some more questions on the guest posting stuff what is best sorry Doug Landers from Tulsa Oklahoma when you post a guest post on another site what is best practice as far as should you put that post on your blog as well and is it okay to repurpose or even rewrite other content from your blog to put on other people's sites so if you put that content on your blog it's going to be duplicate content and it'll penalize you Google has this thing called a panda update when they see two pieces of the same content on multiple places they penalize usually one source sometimes both you don't want to be penalized okay the other thing is you mentioned can you take content from your site and put it on other people's sites yes you can so if you wrote a 2000 word blog post you can take 100 words and put it on another blog and link back to yours saying you sourced it from it but you can't take the whole blog post or like half of it or even one fourth of it is too much but you can take snippets that's when you do block quotes are you familiar with block quotes so block quotes is like citing a citation and then within WordPress you can cite and then you can link back to the original source and that'll help you also build links those links will help you with your SEO Hey Neil I'm Dave Braille from Fredericksburg Virginia but I was just wondering about what he'd said with the what you'd said about the duplicate content because I do have you know several blogs but I kind of want to consolidate them and I want to get them off the old Kolatu blog I mean onto the new Kolatu blog and out of the old one a lot of them what I did is I've done excerpts on the blog beast and put them to my domain that I've transferred over to Kolatu okay now those have disappeared because you can't you can't get to that domain anymore because I transferred it to Kolatu can I take that because now it's no longer existent and that domain's no longer in existence well the domain is in existence it's under it'll still be on the same domain it'll just be in because it was previously on before you now you know whatever slash success okay and that's where I had my my content but what I when I transferred my for you now over to um Kolatu it killed the subdirectory because it's on a different so it killed the subdirectory which means all the content from the original source is no longer there has disappeared right okay now you can put it on the new domain name right but that's not gonna no because it's no longer in the old place okay so as long as it's not you can move it you can move it I would even take the old one and 301 redirect it to the new one I can't anymore that's fine screwed it and if they give you a badge for the word what are you gonna do with that badge share it and maybe even put it on your own blog right so every time I start a new blog I always do this this is one of my first blog posts that I end up releasing usually it's like number three I'll end up doing if I'm in a space like poems or if I'm in a space on astrology I would end up writing a blog post called the top the top 100 astrology blogs okay if I create the top 100 astrology blogs and I go and do research I do googling and I look for the top 100 blogs I can then end up listing them out one through a hundred within there I don't just link to them I write a description about each of them make it thorough make that post good where people want to read it then once that post is done I then can go on have you guys heard of Fiverr F-I-V-E-R-R you don't have to pay five dollars you can get it for one dollar I don't know five dollars is the minimum right same thing it's cheap anyways there should be a winner don't take my idea guys don't take my idea okay so what you end up doing is you're going out there and you're paying someone five dollars to create a badge that says top 100 astrology blogs or top 100 English blogs whatever it may be these blogs have to be related to your space if you're on internet marketing you should only do this for top 100 internet marketing blogs you don't want 50 you want 100 that's 50 more people who could put the badge on your site you don't want to do a thousand because then it's not that prestige to have a top thousand badge the top hundred is good after you publish the post you go to a site called StumbleUpon have you heard of StumbleUpon okay StumbleUpon.com slash ads A-D-S for ten bucks they will drive you literally like a thousand clicks a thousand believe it or not because you're not only paying for clicks but those clicks create more clicks and you should see a snowball effect of at least a thousand plus visitors sometimes like five thousand this will help all of those blogs see your website in their Google Analytics it lets them know that your blog is a powerhouse in this space then you shoot them an email and you say hey John I just want to let you know that you've done such a great job with xyz.com that I've included in my list of the top 100 histology blogs on the internet wow you've done an amazing job thanks and then at the end I'll be like PS feel free to share it with your audience and you can tweet it out and then I'll do PPS I've created a badge for you and if you want to showcase your success to your readers feel free to include this badge on your website a lot of people will take that badge and link it back to your website roughly five to six percent on top of that you're going to get a lot of people to share it out, tweet it out Facebook it they're going to even link to you all of this stuff will help you gain more traffic and traction it's a great way to kick off your blog and get readers try it out it works you can even add my blog to your list but don't ask me to put a badge I'm kidding can we what? repeat which part? the last part I was just saying if you do this with your blog it'll work, it'll get you links and it'll help with your Google rankings, your traffic, your social following and the number of comments you receive I'm going to do blogging can you hear me okay?

I can hear you when you have multiple content can you talk a little bit about your strategies or pages if your blog is going to have more than one content or several types of niches here's the thing you guys may love this or hate this but you don't want to be blogging about too many niches ideally pick one if you want you can pick two or three but if you pick too many Google and other people won't know what your blog is about so it won't rank as well because it's on too many random topics in addition to that what you'll find is you won't gain like a cult following that's on one specific topic anytime you pick a niche you're going to get a much more loyal following so try not to blog on too many things at once so could you probably do several pages or different blogs for different niches if you want to pick more than a few niches start creating more blogs okay thanks next question how do I get a top 100 list? how do I create one? just randomize it just randomize it and you let them know in the introduction it's randomized because if you don't randomize it what ends up happening is some people will end up linking back to you I've done the thing where I've ranked them in order and people are like oh this blows I'm not at the top I don't want to link to this I'm number 99 but when you tell them it's randomized it actually causes you to get more links and more shares no I do list them out one through a hundred but I tell them it's randomized you can also not randomize it and if I don't randomize it I decide based on Alexa have you heard of Alexa.com? and it tells you the number how popular a blog is the lower the number the more popular it is the people being a number one and then a lot of sites being a million or whatever and then the sites that are the smaller numbers are usually at the top the sites that are the bigger numbers are at the bottom I usually do that as well so basically you just use Alexa to get that that's correct it works extremely well thank you a lot of this stuff is tactical it may seem boring but it works trust me if you do this and you don't get 10,000 plus visitors to your blog a month after six months you're doing something wrong I'm following you Jay who's next? yes you do so you can't just say Sheryl Sandberg number one you have to do in your list you do Sheryl Sandberg and if she's number one then you can do like you do one sentence explaining what the blog you have no content on your blog or should you already have some content and then do the list? you should do the list you have to wait at least two posts so publish at least two posts before you do the egos gets the best of them if you tell an expert you want to interview them what are they going to say exactly if they say no there's something wrong with them I have rarely ever seen an expert say no because it's more exposure now when they're getting this interview you're asking them questions you would create five to ten no more than that because if you give them too many you'll find that these experts are busy and they're not going to respond to them but don't give them more than ten questions and you can post them on your blog when you post these questions on your blog it helps them get exposure and what's the one thing that they have that you probably don't have a following once it's published once it's published you would actually email them so I'd be like hey jacron thanks for doing the interview love you to death here's the interview I published feel free to share it with your followers and I would actually even create the tweet for them where they can just copy and paste it to make it really simple and that's it and what you'll find out is they usually always share it on the social web some even link back to it on their press page I first google the experts in my space and I look to see which ones have press pages because once I have the interview I'm like yeah feel free to add this to your press page because then they'll link to it which helps your google rankings too and traffic so the question was what is a press page a press page is a place where people showcase every place on the web or even offline that has talked about them so if they've been in a magazine they'll be like in this magazine on this date if someone wrote about them on their blog or Forbes wrote about them they'll be like you know interviewed by Forbes and you'll be on there too and when you're next to Forbes and all these other places it also makes your website become more authoritative because it'll be like wow if this person's been on Forbes and then your website must be something it works really well and then the next level I've done the expert roundups where I'll get like 100 experts or 50 100 is overkill but 50 works really well where I ask 50 people one question you can do it through google docs and just have them fill it out or whatever it may be you get 50 responses you have them include their photo their twitter handle and a link to their website they definitely share that you'll get a ton of traction because now you have 50 experts tweeting about you and you can keep doing that so like if I was blogging on creating websites here's what 50 experts have to say about creating your first website here's what 50 experts have to say about you know how to rank number one on google you get what I mean you can keep asking questions doing these expert you can kind of follow your metrics trackable links for them or who? trackable links for yeah for them like you know that you're linking out to them so you're seeing there's no need they'll see it in What is there do we rank better if we stay with building on a brand online or can we go ahead and map our own domain? Yeah you can do either one. There's no right or wrong answer to this. I actually get this question a lot and it's phrased differently. The question I get is should I create a corporate brand or should I create a personal brand?

Should I have an Empower Network URL or should I have my own URL? Either one really does work. It's a question of just personal preference. There's also embed code out there for like Facebook buttons and you can have some and create something custom for you that's for you know Facebook sharing and instead of the button saying Facebook it's just spam and then when they embed it you just copy and paste and goes on their Facebook and said haters gonna hate let them hate on their Facebook. Building a brand online dot com has a PR ranking of two the last time that I checked and when you buy your domain name it takes you a while to rank that thing. Does it really make a difference or not? No Google stopped updating page rank.

The page rank you see on your end is not the same on what they see on their end. Their page rank is not a scale of one to ten either. It's been like that for years just ignore that whole number. What would be your preferred call to action at the end of blog posts. That are off topic. Like I would not try to put a call to action off topic. Those are the posts where you don't try to sell so that way people don't feel that you're just trying to sell, sell, sell. Right. I think a good example I have in mind is Amy Star Allen how she's blogging CrossFit.

That kind of example where it's all about health right. And she is promoting in power. What may be an example that you would use as a call to action at the end of that kind of content. How to build your own health. How to build your own brand being in the health space. You can be talking about that right.

People who are reading it are also individuals out there in the career world are looking to figure out how to make money on their own without having a nine to five job. They're also trying to grow their brand, their social profiles, etc. You can promote all that stuff. You just feel like yeah you know by the way PS if you're wondering how I got my blog so popular I learned it from X, Y, and Z course or whatever it may be. Right. That's what I would do.

Indirect though does not convert as much as blogging on topic. Just as an FYI. But still it's better than nothing. So you talk a lot about making money ranking sites on your blogs right. Do you have a blog that it's not about this electronic matter? What matter?

Electronic matter. Like ranking your website, making a website. Oh like do I blog about stuff outside? Yeah. I do. Like I wrote a blog post on how a friar made me a million bucks because it's still relevant to business.

I mean outside of making money as well. Right. A lot of us have passions and talents and interests outside of making money. No I don't do too much of that. I like the Seahawks. I don't really blog on the Seahawks ever.

You shrink it down. What did you call it? Yeah you can do like an excerpt. So if I want to link to another duplicate a post instead of making a duplicate. What I would do is I would just take an excerpt from that article. Put it like in blog quotes and link out to it.

Sorry I'm losing my voice guys. Been doing a lot of videos this weekend. Question for you would be my name is Desmond by the way from Vancouver Canada. Yeah. Dream team. And okay so Neil can you share with us you know a little excerpt of what you do in your day when you start blogging.

Right. You don't have to talk about your bath and your shower your breakfast. But once you sit down and you start blogging. You know from A to Z. What do you do when you come up with your idea your headline everything. And then how do you syndicate it.

Sure. So I first come up with the headline. Then I write the introduction. Then I bullet the main body points out. Then I fill in the body. Then I write the conclusion.

Then I publish the post. Then I spread it on Facebook. I schedule it. I don't just publish. I schedule it. I write posts in advance.

Then I once it's published I do an email blast letting people know the post has been released. I then share it on Facebook Twitter LinkedIn. Social channels for me. And then what I do is everyone who I link to that's an external link I shoot him an email letting him know I linked him and ask him to share it. Alright. That's my process.

Works really well. Thank you very much. Say it again. Okay so I come up with the headline. After I come up with the headline I write the introduction. After I write the introduction I bullet out the main points in the body.

Then I write the body. Okay. I come up with the headline. Once I come up with the headline I write the introduction. Once I write the introduction I write out the main points of the body. Like I'll just list out if it's a 17 point list I just quickly list out what are the 17 points before I start start writing.

Then I start writing those points. Then once I'm done, I create the conclusion. I end the conclusion with a question. I italicize it. Within the body, I feel free to link out to any other places that are relevant, internal post or external. I then schedule the post for the ideal time.

I went over that yesterday. Once the post is up, I do an email blast letting all my followers or readers knowing about it. Okay, after I do that, I share it on Facebook, share it on Twitter, share it on LinkedIn. And then I email out everyone I link to that's an external site and I ask them to share that content or on Twitter, Facebook, etc. That's it? Oh, I email them letting them know that I linked them and I ask them to share it out.

The writing part, I can write a post pretty fast. Like I came here from Las Vegas to here. I worked with some buddies. I brainstormed my headline for like 20 minutes. After I had the headline, it took me 45 minutes to write the post. I wrote it literally in the car ride from there to here.

And then I set it up as a draft yesterday before I spoke. My editor went in to proofread it all. And then the emailing and sharing on Twitter, that takes me like 10 minutes max. And then emailing out people. I have an assistant that does that. I don't know how long that part takes.

They have an email address like neilsoandsoatneilpatel.com or something like that. Last question. Okay, great. I had, with all of the, what you've taught us this weekend about titles, creating a title, I am thinking back to some blog posts that I wrote that were great but could definitely have used a better title. Are you able to change, go back and change titles or is that not a good thing to do? Yes, I do that all the time.

Okay. I remember I wrote a post one time on the four ways to become rich and I started ranking on Google for the keyword how to become rich, like after 60 days. I then went into that post and I changed the title to how to become rich. I forget the four ways. So should you change? And I don't change the URL WordPress.

Even yours keeps the URL the same. Okay, so that slug. Keep the URL the same, the slug. That's what it's called, the URL slug. You just change the title. No, no, you don't need to do a redirect.

Just keep the URL the same. It's okay. It works extremely well. And then I saw my spot goal for how to become rich even higher on Google. I was like, hell yeah. So they'll pay attention to the title.

They do more than the URL. By far. They look at the title more than the URL. Oh, sweet. Thank you. Okay, go for it.

What happens if the title happens to be the same that somebody else might have out on the internet? Oh, that's okay. That happens all the time. Okay, cool. Don't worry about it. There's billions of articles or trillions on the internet, right?

Someone's going to copy you one way or another. Or you're going to copy someone else. It's okay. Yeah, title and headline is interchangeably. I'm saying the same thing. Title of the post, headline of the post, same thing.
