The entire structure of an online business fits on one whiteboard, and it takes about five minutes to draw. That’s not an exaggeration for effect. In this session of the Classic Masters Course, the whole map gets sketched out in front of the room in exactly that much time, because once you can see the picture, you stop being confused about what actually matters.

If you’re a visual learner, this lesson exists for you. And if you’ve been drowning in tactics, funnels, tools, and conflicting advice, this is the session that shrinks everything back down to a handful of essentials, plus two layers most people never get taught at all.

What are the essentials every online business runs on?

The map starts with five pieces, in order. First, traffic. That can be SEO, PPC, solo ads, anything, and the point is bigger than the internet:

Every business needs traffic. It doesn’t matter whether you have an insurance agency. It doesn’t matter whether you have a Walmart, whether you have a gas station. Every business needs traffic.

Second, and this is the piece most of the room was missing: leads. Traffic that passes through without leaving contact information is gone forever. You collect leads with a capture page.

Third, the list. This is where the leads accumulate, and the list branches into everything else that matters: it lets you follow up, tell your story, build a relationship, and connect with people over time.

Fourth, sales. On the internet, sales are generated two ways: sales videos and sales letters. That’s it. Videos and letters. If that feels too simple, that’s the point, it is simple, and complicating it is how people stay stuck.

Fifth, follow-up, which you handle with an autoresponder, so the relationship-building and selling happen on schedule whether you’re at the keyboard or not.

Why is the list non-negotiable?

Mid-lesson, the room gets polled: who here is not building a list? A couple of hands go up, and the response is immediate. You need to be building a list. If you’re building with a platform that lets you plug in a list through a service like AWeber or GetResponse, use it. If you’re building anything else, get a list service anyway, because it’s essential either way.

The reason is stated in one line, and it’s the most practical sentence in the session: if you aren’t focusing on building your list, you’re having to do things over and over and over again. Every promotion starts from zero. Every follow-up is manual. Every story you tell reaches only whoever happens to be passing by that day. The list is what converts today’s work into an asset you can use tomorrow.

What comes after the essentials?

Once the essentials are running, the second section of the map is team building, and it consists of unglamorous, repeatable things: copy and paste messages, conference calls, webinars, and sometimes team sites. On that last one, the room gets asked directly, do you need a team site? No. You don’t. It shows up on the map because teams sometimes use them, not because your progress depends on one.

The third section is culture, and it’s built from two raw materials: story and social proof. Both of them get delivered through videos or blog posts, and through events, where people experience the community in person. Culture is what makes a team something people want to belong to rather than just a downline they happen to be in.

Why does the order of the map matter?

Because it mirrors how every successful person in the room actually built. The essentials came first, traffic, leads, sales, follow-up, and only then did team building start, and culture grew on top of that. People get in trouble by working the map backwards: obsessing over team sites and culture-building before they have traffic, or trying to build community before they’ve built a list. Break the business into its sections, get the essential section working, and let each layer create the need for the next one.

Notice, too, what isn’t on the whiteboard. No design perfectionism. No dozen-tool tech stack. Not even good spelling, which gets joked about up front, the map was drawn fast and imperfectly, because clarity beats polish. The map is short on purpose. The essentials are few. The discipline is doing them.

This is one session from the Classic Masters Course, and the surrounding lessons expand each box on this whiteboard into full trainings, traffic, list building, team building, and culture, taught by the people who did them. If you’re new to it, the entire Classic Masters Course, this lesson included, is available for $99 at the Classic Masters Course.

Your assignment takes five minutes, the same five minutes it took on stage. Draw the map yourself: traffic, leads, list, sales, follow-up, then team building, then culture. Circle the box your business is missing right now, and make that box your only project this week.

So can I show you guys also, because I want you to see what this actually looks like. And hopefully the camera can be put on this board and we can paint it out a little bit. Because when you are able to visualize what it looks like, then you can understand it a little bit better. Does that help? Sometimes a lot of you visual learners, you need to be able to kind of see how it looks.

So I sat here and I mapped this out in about five minutes, right? Because, I mean, that's literally all it takes. But these are the essentials. And my spelling is horrible, so if I misspell anything, then there's the disclaimer up front. You know, you don't need to spell good to make lots of money.

So the essentials are traffic, right? Traffic, which can be SEO, PPC, solo ads. Anything. Every business needs traffic. It doesn't matter whether you have an insurance agency.

It doesn't matter whether you have a Walmart, whether you have a gas station. Every business needs traffic. Here's the part that a lot of you are missing, is the leads, right? With leads, how do you collect those? Capture page.

And then you start to build your list, right? And the list branches off into other things. Which is what I broke down for you guys before. The list allows you to follow up, it allows you to build your story, it allows you to build a relationship or tell your story, build a relationship, and connect with people, right? Sales and follow up.

Okay? Sales, there's two ways usually that sales are generated, especially on the internet. Okay? That's obviously what we're talking about. And that's sales videos and sales letters.

That's it. Sales videos and sales letters. I want to just simplify it for you guys. So videos and letters, okay? The follow up, you do that with what?

An autoresponder, okay? That's the essentials. The list, obviously, by building the list. How many of you in this room, just curious, this will give me a good pulse, are not building a list? Okay, a couple.

You need to be building a list. If you're building with Empower, then we allow you to plug in your list name back with AWeber or GetResponse. If you're building something else, you need to be using a service that helps you build your list. It's essential. I could train on that all day long and it'd be worth $5,000.

Because I'm telling you, the bottom line is, is that if you don't... Aren't focusing on building your list, you're having to do things over and over and over again. Yes or no, Tony? Over and over and over again, okay? So once you've got that, this is what we were just talking about a minute ago with Tracy, which is team building.

Team building consists of things that we do such as copy and paste. Write that down. Copy and paste. Conference calls. Websites.

Webinars, right? So write that down over here. Team building consists of, and I'm just going to put an arrow here, copy and paste, conference calls, webinars, team sites sometimes, but do you need a team site? No. No.

You don't need a team site. But that's where the team building comes in. And then the last thing is culture. Okay? Which is story, social proof, and you can do both of those with videos or blog posts.

Guys, when I learned this, and events, and events, this is the process, and this is how it's broken up. This is a section, right? The essentials. Team building is a section. And then culture.

And then culture is a section, okay? When you break this down and you realize that the essential things that you need that everybody started to get in the beginning was traffic, leads, sales, follow up, and then the team building started, which what I want to do is I want to bring up, I want to bring up Sophia if I can. Do you want to come up? Give her a hand, guys.
