Chicago Event 2013- Magic Happens from Decisions Chuck Marshall’s True and Inspirational Story
The most expensive decisions in your life rarely look like decisions. They look like defaults. The event you didn’t attend, the call you didn’t make, the room you stayed out of because you assumed it wasn’t for you. Nothing dramatic happens. You just quietly keep the life you already have.
Chuck Marshall took the Chicago “Get Money” Event stage in 2013 introduced as one of the original believers in Empower Network, a man who blazed the trail for what the company became. And the story he chose to tell wasn’t about tactics. It was about how close he came to skipping the event that changed his business and his family life, and what he now understands about the machinery of decisions.
Why would anyone leave Maui for a hotel ballroom in Atlanta?
When the company’s first event was announced in Atlanta, Chuck wasn’t planning to go. The business was already working for him, and he figured these things were pitch fests, people in suits and ties selling stuff from a stage. On top of that, he was two weeks into a family vacation in Maui, which is a hard place to talk yourself out of.
Then he watched a video where Dave said the only person with an excuse not to be there was Christina Munoz, a member who physically couldn’t get up and travel, and who would be there if she could. For reasons Chuck says he still can’t fully explain, that sentence got him. He asked his wife, Christy. She asked the reasonable question, why would you leave Hawaii to fly to Atlanta, and then backed him anyway, the way he says she has at every step.
The logistics were absurd. Five and a half hours from Hawaii to Portland. He put his wife and kids in a cab home and stayed in the airport with the same vacation luggage. A two-hour wait, then another four and a half hours to Atlanta, a six-hour time change, no sleep on the plane, and no hotel room booked. A friend named Mac let him crash. He missed Friday entirely because he was still in the air, and walked straight into the Saturday morning session.
What did he find that he didn’t expect?
Not what he’d braced for. Nobody drawing circles on a whiteboard. No suits. Instead, Dave Wood walking around with his shoes off, saying the unrepeatable things Dave Wood says, and a room full of the most inspired, lifted-up people Chuck had ever seen in one place. He says he got to the end of the weekend asking himself, what the hell just happened?
The part that actually moved the needle wasn’t on the stage at all. It was the hallways. Meeting people face to face between sessions, hearing their stories, telling his. Those conversations raised his belief in what the company was doing, and his belief raised theirs in return. His words for the shift are worth keeping: that was the point where he stepped in and became present in his business. He had been earning from it. Now he could actually see it, the vision, what they were going for.
What was he really chasing all those years?
Chuck had been in the home-business industry about six years when he found Empower Network, and his stated reason was always the standard one: support the family, build a better life than a nine-to-five allows, be there for his kids. True, but not the root. At the previous event in Austin, going through speaker training with David’s brother Will, he hit the actual bottom of it. What he wanted was to feel that what he does matters, that it’s genuinely a benefit to other people, that he’s important to something beyond himself.
That reframe matters for you because of what he said next, about the people around you. When you start something like this, some friends, family, and co-workers will tell you to get a regular job, that these things don’t work, that only the people at the top win. Chuck’s read is that it comes from one of two places. Either misery loves company and they don’t want you climbing while they stay put, or, more often, they love you, don’t understand what you’re doing, assume everything is a scam, and are honestly trying to protect you. Either way the effect is identical: it is brutally hard to believe in yourself while marinating in that at home, alone, reviewing the business at your kitchen table.
Which is his whole case for getting in the room. Surrounded by like-minded people who care about you and believe in you, you borrow belief until your own shows up. And you notice something you can’t unsee: the people on stage, the Tony Rushes and Tracy Walkers and Vics, are regular people. Not different from you in kind. Different in one repeatable act. As Chuck put it, the only difference is the decision. They made the decision, and they took action to get where they are.
When you make that decision, the change happens. A change could take some time, but, you know, when you make the decision, it happens in an instant.
Why doesn’t the best training in the world save you?
Chuck was direct about this. He believes the company has the best products, the best system, the coolest training, all of it. And all of it is worthless to a person who doesn’t act. You could own every course and sit on every call, and if you take no action, nothing happens. The encouraging inverse is the heart of his talk: in his telling, the next Tony Rush and the next Tracy Walker were sitting in that Chicago audience, people who at that moment were exactly where you might be right now. The gap between the seats and the stage wasn’t talent or information. It was a decision, plus the massive action that follows one.
He also went after the industry’s favorite cliché, the man in the suit telling you to focus on a three-to-five-year plan. Chuck’s response: who decided that was cool? When he went looking for a way to work from home, he had bills due now. He pointed at a friend in the audience whose mortgage company never offered him five years to pay what was due that month. The point is not a promise that anything happens fast for anyone. The point is that a decision deferred is usually a decision never made, and the urgency you feel right now is fuel if you use it.
What decision have you been leaving on default?
Run Chuck’s story against your own calendar. Ten hours of flying, no hotel, no sleep, on nothing more than a hunch that a room might matter. That’s what deciding looked like for him, and everything he described as magic sits on the far side of it. Magic happens from decisions is not mysticism. It’s mechanics. The decision happens in an instant, the change compounds afterward, and everything before the decision is just circling the airport.
This talk is one session from the Chicago “Get Money” Event 2013 recordings.
So pick the default you’ve been calling a decision. The event you keep not attending, the commitment you keep not making, the conversation you keep postponing. Decide it today, in writing, with a date on it. The change may take time to show. The decision takes a second. Take the second.

That was painless. It's like a Band-Aid. Kevin Thompson, the Band-Aid of the Empower Network. All right. I'm going to keep the show moving.
You guys ready for another speaker? Awesome, man. This guy is one of the first, the original believers in the Empower Network. He blazed the trail for what it is today. Let's give it up.
A nice warm applause for Mr. Chuck Marshall, everybody. Give it up for him. Chuck. Wow.
Wow. Gosh. How's everybody doing? Good? Good.
I'm happy because I didn't have to take a pontoon boat through the parking lot in my hotel to get here today. The water is crazy the last couple of days. But you know what? A lot of people went through a lot of stuff to be here this weekend. I mean, canceled flights, delayed flights, seven bus trips or whatever you had to do to get here.
But you know what? I'm happy. I'm happy. The reason why, I know that the reason why people wanted to be here because they know there's something special here. You know, those who have been to the events before know that.
Those who haven't been here before have come to see what that's all about. And for me, coming to these events has actually transformed my life, my income and, you know, my family life and the things that Empower Network has been able to do for me and my family. And I wasn't even going to actually, it was kind of a funny story because the very first event was in Atlanta, Georgia. And, you know, Dave would have been sending out, we had been promoting it and wanted us to, people to come to the events. And I had never been to them before and I wasn't really planning on coming to it.
I didn't really care. You know, I was making money with it. And I just thought these things were, you know, I didn't know what they, people in suits and ties selling stuff or just a pitch fest. And I didn't know what to think, you know. So, I was in Hawaii with my family.
And we had been there for about two weeks in Maui. And I watched this video of Dave and he said, you know, the only person that has an excuse not to be here is Christina Munoz. You guys know who she is? Because she physically can't get up and be here. But if she could, she would.
And for some reason that spoke to me. I don't know if it was, you know, his hypnotic tones or something. I just, I don't know what he did to me. I watched that video and I talked to my wife, Christy, and I said, well, you know, do you think that I could, you know, you know, that. That I could go to the event, you know, in Atlanta.
Because it was right on the same day as us leaving when we were in Hawaii. So, she's like, yeah, that's fine. If you want to do that, it's fine. But at first she was like, well, why do you want to leave Hawaii to go to Atlanta? You know.
And I was like, well, you know, because I don't know. I feel like I should be there. I feel like I want to be there. And I don't know why. Like I said, I got hypnotized or something.
But I just wanted to go. So, I flew, you know, from Hawaii to Portland. It's like a five and a half hour flight. So, we went from there to Portland. I got my wife and my kids a cab ride home.
I stayed in the airport. Had the same luggage. Didn't, you know, had the same stuff. Two hours. Waited there two hours.
It took another flight of like four and a half hours to get there to Atlanta. So, I flew ten hours. Six hour time change. No sleep on the plane. My boy, my friend Mac, I don't know if he's here in the audience today, this morning.
Maybe he's still in bed. I don't know. But he let me stay in his hotel room. I didn't have a hotel room booked. I didn't have anywhere to stay.
And I just, I went right through. Went through on the very first session. Then the Saturday morning. Just like how it is right here. Saturday morning.
It was the first, I missed Friday because I was flying. And it totally blew me away. You know, and I didn't even, I didn't even know why at first. Because when I was watching this thing over the weekend, I was like, and at the end of it, I was like, what the hell just happened? Like, you know, there was nobody up here, you know, drawing circles on a whiteboard and stuff.
And it was like, you know, got Dave Wood walking around with his shoes off. Talking about, you know. Getting boners and touching people's butts and all the stuff that he talks about. And people were like the most inspired and uplifted. And out of anything, I've never seen that before.
And, you know, the coolest thing for me was like out in the hallways chatting with people. You know, getting to meet people face to face. They would tell things to me like, you know, I was so, I didn't speak at that point. I went up on stage to collect a check, which is, that was cool. That was the first experience too.
The first conversations I'd have with people out in the hallways. And what it did for me was like it increased my belief level in Empower Network and what we're doing. And that helped to increase, like, the belief level of others. You know, and that was at that point in that event that I actually became, I stepped in and became present, you know, in my business and Empower Network. Where I actually started to see what we were doing, the vision that they had, and what we were actually going for.
So, that event was, that event. It was pretty, it was huge for me, you know. And as the rest of the events that I've been to before, not only has my income increased, but I've actually had a huge, for me it was a pretty big breakthrough when I, at our last event in Austin. When we were going through the speaker training with David's brother, Will. And I actually realized what my actual purpose was, which was huge for me.
Because it wasn't about just like, you know, chasing the dollar. I mean, I had been in. Working in the home-based business industry or network marketing, whatever you guys, you know, whatever we call it. For about six years when I found Empower Network. And I realized that I had been looking for something like Empower Network for six years.
You know, I had never experienced anything like this before. I'd always just been doing it to, you know, to make money so I can support my family and give us a better lifestyle than just, you know, working nine to five jobs. And I wanted to be there for my family and my kids. And what I realized is that it's not what the real root. Of what I was doing is I wanted to feel important about myself and what I'm doing is actually is good, is a benefit to other people.
And then what I'm doing actually matters, you know, because I, you know, I'm sure if you guys, anybody can relate who has who's getting started. Maybe you're here right now and you've or you've dealt with it in the past where you have people that tell you things that are like, well, you know, you should you should just get a regular job or you should not. You know, those things don't work. Or. It only works for the people at the top or, you know, stuff like that, because it can be really if they're kind of shooting you down before you even get started.
So it's hard to believe in yourself. Yeah, I heard that, too. Yeah, so that so and sometimes when that happens, like when your friends and family or co-workers or whoever it is, loved ones, they're doing that. I usually I think it's because there's two reasons. One is because they don't that, you know, like, you know, I said, you know, misery loves company.
I mean, I don't know. It doesn't mean they're miserable, but they don't want you. They don't want you trying to better. Yourself, you know, while they're staying at the same level and two is just because they don't know any better. They you know, they you know, they love you.
They care about you. The family members, they just don't know what you're trying to do. And they think everything's a scam and everything, you know, is a pyramid or whatever you call it. And they're just trying to protect you. But at the same time, it's it's holding it's holding you back from what you really want to do.
So I've gone through luckily my wife, my lovely wife, Christie, sitting right down here. She was never like that to me. She always was very supportive. She said, you know, if you think that. If you think you could do it, I'm going to be there to support you.
And she believed me in every step of the way. And I love you for that, babe. I appreciate that, you know. But the thing with people, when people do that to you, it hard to it's hard to get going and hard to hard to when you're just going to do it. You're at home and you're reviewing the business or you're trying to get started and you're doing it by yourself and you're surrounded by that type of negativity.
It's hard to believe in yourself and believe that you can actually do it when you come here to these events. And you are surrounded by like minded people who care about you, believe in you. And you. And then you start to believe in yourself and you realize that, you know, I'm not any different than the guys up on stage who are already being successful. Like, you know, I'm not any different than, you know, like, you know, Tony Rush or Mac or Vic or Tracy Walker or any, you know, they're just regular people, you know, and if they can do it, I can do it, too.
But the only difference is exactly the only difference is the decision. We made the decision and we decided, you know, we've taken action to get where we are. You know, and so when you are when you're faced with that and you come here and you get surrounded by people like this and it could be something that I say or could be something that Tracy says, it could be something that, you know, Vic says or anybody that comes up here on the stage. Tony Rush says that inspires you to take action, you know, because it's not about all of the how to stuff is in all the products. You know, we have you have the best products, which I believe we do the best system, which I believe we do the coolest training and all the stuff.
You need, which I believe we have all that, too. But if you don't do anything with it, nothing's going to happen. Right. So you could have all that stuff, but if you don't take any action to do anything, nothing's going to happen. So when you come when you come here and you're part of these events and you are, like I said, you become present in your business and it could be something that somebody says that makes you to take to get you to take action, then that's worth it.
That's worth the trip right there. And that's why we keep coming back. And that's what we really like coming here, because, like I said, you guys. There isn't going to be this week. There isn't going to be anybody up here, you know, in a suit and tie drawn circles telling you that, you know, focus on the long term, you know, income, a three to five year plan.
I mean, who decided that was cool? I mean, I don't know about you guys, but when I started, like, looking for a way to make money from home, I mean, I had bills to pay now. You know, I had stuff I needed to do now. You know, I'm not going to wait. I can't wait three to five years.
I mean, my man Tissa over here. I mean, they didn't tell him. Okay, we'll give you five years to pay your mortgage if you need to pay it right now. You know, so when you come in, like I said, you're not going to hear all that stuff. I mean, what you can do, you know, when you come here and you become part of a, you actually, if you take your business seriously and you actually, you know, take massive action to get started in your, to get started with your business, you can actually see, you know, a change.
You know, that's what, because when you make that decision, the change happens. A change could take some time, but, you know, when you make the decision, it happens in an instant. You know, so, like I said, we're not going to have, we don't have any of that kind of stuff where people are, you know, drawing circles on whiteboards and doing all that kind of stuff. But the thing is, too, what's really cool and what I like to tell people is that you can, you can, well, I'm going to start off with a different topic here. What you can do, I believe, like, okay, here in this, in our, in this audience, in our crowd here is that.
There are, there is the next, like, Tony Rush and the next Tracy Walker and the next Vic, the next everybody. I mean, you're here right now. And I hope that at the end of this weekend, you go out and you, you do what you need to do to be up here on stage, you know, collect and check, win in the prizes, win in the contest and do what you need to do to be here. Just like Laura Parrish. I mean, I, that lady's awesome.
She has a great story. And it was great to see her up here doing that. Yeah. But here's the cool thing, guys. What you can do.
What you can do with this little, you know, $25 internet deal. When you come in here, you have the ability to make more in a month than if you want to, if you want it. You have the ability to make more in a month than some people do in a whole entire year. And you have that ability to do that. So when you have those people at home that, that, what we call haters and they're not, you know, they don't believe in you or they're, or they're trying to tell you to just stick with your day job and, you know, those things don't work.
You can come back home from Chicago. And show them that it's a little $25 internet deal can get you out of your job. You live the life you want. And like I said, you have the potential to make as much as some people do in a year in a month. If you want to, there's a lot of people that do that.
But even if you just started out making two, three, four or five grand a month to get you out of your crappy job and you got your time freedom to me, that's being rich right there. You know, absolutely. Absolutely. Because here's the thing, guys. In Atlanta, Georgia, we told you not to be a wussy, right?
In San Diego, California. Taught you how to fight the forces of evil. And a couple months ago in Austin, Texas, we told you how to release your inner badass. But what are we doing here in Chicago? That's right.
We're doing what? You guys want to get money? Yeah. Get up and show me. Come on.
