The Night I Realized the Rich Don’t Have It All Figured Out
I used to think you had to live a perfect life to earn a lot of money. I actually believed you had to have everything figured out. That belief stuck with me for quite a while, until I started making friends with a lot of rich people. It was a late night gathering, maybe twenty people huddled together in a circle, listening raptly to a multi-millionaire speak after a conference. He was telling stories, and suddenly I saw his humanity. I was still impressed by his financial results, but this guy was normal in almost every way. Then it hit me: the rich don’t have everything figured out, they’ve just aligned themselves with the principles that govern wealth.
I was in church about a week ago when an angry man loudly asked, during a class, why are there so many evil rich people when I’m doing what’s right, and I can barely make ends meet? I used to think like that too, but I believe something different now. Notice the error in that kind of thinking: the man was mistakenly equating good deeds with prosperous living. They aren’t the same thing.
Every Seed Bears Fruit After Its Own Kind
All results in life are governed by universal principles of cause and effect. We all reap the natural fruit of our thoughts, emotions, and actions in every area of our life. Every seed bears fruit after its own kind: apple seeds create apple trees, cherry seeds produce cherry trees, acorns produce oak trees. The wealthy have simply mastered the universal laws that govern wealth, the same way happy people have mastered the universal laws that govern happiness. Obeying the laws of peace brings peace. Obeying the laws of prosperity brings prosperity. If you want to be both peaceful and prosperous, you have to obey both sets of laws, and to prosper the way you want, you have to align yourself with the laws that govern that prosperity.
That also means all you have to do to begin to prosper is adopt new attitudes, new beliefs, and new behaviors, aligning yourself with the result you want, and the result begins to appear. But it also means you can’t force the universe to change so that you prosper while you’re fighting universal law. That just doesn’t work. Take health. I used to think that if you were overweight, and I used to be really overweight, the answer was to diet. Rather than modeling people who were naturally thin, I focused on behaviors that just weren’t producing results. Then one day I started observing the world around me more carefully, and I realized almost every dieter I’d ever met was still struggling with their weight. That doesn’t mean dieting can’t help, but it isn’t what most naturally thin people actually do. Naturally thin people have mastered a few attitudes, a few beliefs, a few basic behaviors, and as soon as they align their minds and bodies with that principle, their bodies respond automatically and begin to right themselves.
Every idea is a seed, and each seed bears fruit according to its kind. The harvest you’re enjoying right now in your health, your relationships, and your finances is a direct result of the seeds you’ve been planting. So if you don’t like the harvest you have, you can turn that around today. Everything in life is a mirror, and that mirror is constantly telling you whether you’re obeying universal law or not. If you’re brave enough to ask life a question, it will tell you whether you’re aligned with prosperity or scarcity in every area of your life.
Are You Brave Enough to Stare Truth in the Face?
A couple of years ago, one of my mentors, a man who was a professor at the University of New York, looked me in the eyes with a gaze that pierced straight through me. He asked, are you brave enough to stare truth in the face? There was a pregnant silence. I swallowed hard. Truthfully, in that moment, I wasn’t sure. But reluctantly I nodded and said, yes, I am brave enough.
Calmly, he asked me to take a look at my bank balance. What does it say? Are you prospering the way you want to, or not? Because your bank account doesn’t lie, it reflects the truth right back at you in zeros and ones. Have you been aligned to prosperity? What he told me next shook me to the core. He smiled and said, money is not the problem, you are the problem. That was the bad news, but it was the good news too, because if I was the problem, then I could be the solution. If my thinking had created my poor results up until that moment, I could align my thinking toward new thoughts. If my words had been the problem, I could choose new words. If my actions had been the problem, I could choose new actions. That was the day I made the decision to follow a new plan and take a new course in life.

That means you align yourself with the result that you want, and the result will immediately begin to appear in your life. But it also means that you cannot force the universe to change so that you prosper while you choose to fight universal law. That just doesn't work.
Let me give you an example of how universal law affects your health. I used to think that if you were overweight, and I used to be really overweight, you had to diet. As soon as they align their minds and bodies with universal law, their bodies respond automatically and begin to right-size. Remember, every idea is a seed, and each idea is a seed. Each seed bears fruit according to its kind, and the harvest you are enjoying right now in your health, in your relationships, and in your finances is a direct result of the kinds of seeds that you've been planting.
