Lawrence Tam on Blog Tech: Why Static Websites Lose to Blogs on Search
You built the website two years ago. One page, a photo of the storefront, a phone number, a contact form nobody fills out. Every time you want to change something, a headline, a price, a photo that’s gone stale, you email the designer and wait three days for a reply that costs you money either way. Lawrence Tam spent twelve years as a mechanical engineer before he found the actual fix, and it wasn’t a better version of that same website. It was a different kind of website entirely. He started publishing in 2009, retired from engineering at 33, and pulled his wife out of her accounting job doing it, building most of that income selling things that had nothing to do with each other: dog food, cat water fountains, vacuum cleaners, weight loss products, whatever the niche called for.
The tool underneath all of it was a blog. Not a hobby diary, a specific piece of technology built to behave completely differently from the static site sitting there doing nothing for you right now.
Why does a blog outperform a static website when they’re technically both just websites?
A static site is one page carrying one message. You update it rarely because updating it is expensive and slow, so it sits there, the same offer, the same three sentences, month after month. A blog is the same underlying technology with one structural difference: it’s built to keep adding pages, and every one of those pages is a separate door a search engine can walk through to find you. Sell one house on a static page and you have exactly one shot at being found. Build fifteen posts around that same house, the floors, the neighborhood, the school district, the closing costs, and you’ve built fifteen doors that all funnel back to the listing, each one strengthening the page underneath it.
Tam proved the model scales past one blog entirely. He ran his own niche sites the same way, one discipline repeated. “Once you get good at one blog, what stops you from running hundreds?” By 2010 he had more than fifty running, each pointed at a narrow audience, because the mechanics that worked on the first one transferred completely to the next.
How does a long, specific search phrase turn into an actual customer?
This is the part most new publishers get backwards. They chase the biggest word in their category, assuming more traffic means more customers, and end up buried under a category that’s already crowded with everyone else chasing the same word. Tam’s approach runs the other direction: get narrower, not broader, and let the narrow phrase do the work of pre-qualifying the reader before they even land on the page.
- A single broad word pulls enormous traffic and near-zero buying intent, because the person searching it could want almost anything.
- A longer, specific phrase pulls a fraction of the traffic, but the person typing it already knows exactly what they want.
- The narrower phrase is also easier to rank for, because far fewer sites bother competing on it.
He builds the case with a real estate example: a house that might resell to a feng shui-conscious buyer doesn’t need a page about houses in general. It needs three specific paragraphs on picking a home that fits feng shui principles, aimed at the one reader who’s already searching for exactly that. Same logic on the food side. A taco stand doesn’t rank on the word tacos. It ranks on the specific dish, the specific city, the specific claim, because that’s the exact string a hungry, decided person is typing into the search bar.
See, the idea with this is if you are marketing to everybody, you market to nobody. But with this, you can continue to hit what you need to do for your core audience, your core target audience, your core niche.
That’s the whole mechanism in one line. Narrow the audience on purpose, and the search phrase becomes the filter that hands you a reader who already wants what you’re offering before they’ve read a word of your page.
Do you have to already be the expert before you start publishing?
This is the objection that freezes people before they type a single post. Tam’s answer is blunt: you don’t have to be the guru, the top authority in your field, the person everyone defers to. If you have even a passing, ordinary interest in a topic, you already know more than half the people who’d search for it. If it’s something you do regularly, something close to a real passion, you’re likely ahead of the vast majority of anyone reading you. Teaching someone to change their own oil doesn’t require being a mechanic. It requires knowing where the oil goes and being willing to show someone who doesn’t.
The other lesson he pushes just as hard is asking directly for what you want. He was reviewing a specific cat water fountain, getting real readers from Google, and getting almost no sales, until he added a plain button that said where to buy it. Sales moved immediately. The same principle carried over off the clock: his daughter, in kindergarten and again in first grade, led her school’s fundraiser two years running using nothing but a short video and a direct request for the sale, no door knocking, no static flyer, just the same blogging fundamentals aimed at a cause instead of a product. The content earns the attention. The direct ask is what turns that attention into action.
None of this requires being polished on day one. Posts get edited later, cheaply, without calling anyone. What it requires is picking a real niche, narrowing your keyword instead of widening it, and asking plainly for the outcome you actually want, whether that’s a sale, a donation, or someone simply reading your message to the end.
The full session goes further than what’s above, including how Tam structured internal pages to reinforce a single main listing and the exact keyword research method he still uses to find a niche’s low-competition phrases. Watch it in full, free, when you Create your free account.

Hello, my name is Lawrence Tam, I want to thank you for coming here and interested in learning what is a blog, how it can help you, why traffic is easily generated on a blog, who should use it, how do you actually build a successful blog, but a little before we go into that, I want to introduce myself. My name is Lawrence Tam, I used to be a mechanical engineer, retired at the age of 33, based around the technology of what a blog is, right, we'll go into that. I've been doing it since 2009, selling everything from dog food, cat water fountains, vacuum cleaners, direct sales, weight loss, doesn't matter, I've built most of it through a blog, made myself enough money to retire my accountant wife and myself from engineering, all based around blog technology and understanding why blogs are critical for your success if you're trying to sell purses, you're trying to sell real estate, or you just want to get your word out, and we'll go into that, right.
So let's go dive into the material, let's go and determine and define, what is a blog? Like what is a blog? So a blog is a personal website, but how is it different from a static website or a standard website? So people will always ask the question, well, what is a blog?
A blog is a website, but a blog is more of a non-static, or as you say, a moving target, I like to say an ever-growing, ever-growing website. Ever consistently on-topic website. This is a blog, and the definition from Wiki would be, it is a regularly updated weblog. It's a weblog.
Weblog. That's what it is, it's a weblog, it's like a journal, it's built so that it's gonna be taking more and more content, more and more updated material, and that's what search engines want. Now, without talking about a blog and why you need it, we need to actually talk about who uses a blog, and who interfaces with the blog, why I actually use that. See, the blog is really just a standard website.
It's just a standard website. It's a standard website, but it's constantly being updated, and this is what search engines want. Now, why is it important that you know why a blog is used? What search engines want?
Why is it important that you know why a blog is used? What search engines want? What search engines want? Because the full reason why you actually have content is to be found by search engines.
The primary traffic most people get in a blog… Now, there's multiple other ways to get traffic to your blog, but the easiest and the best way is to consider SEO, search engine optimization. Now, this is gonna be a very easy way to digest this. We'll be going at a pace that you could take notes and understand why these are important, why these interact.
with each other the blog interacts with search engines because search engines you know when you go on Google or Yahoo or MSN or you know I guess Bing and you type in what is a good place to eat and then it gives you a bunch of different results those results are being found by search engines but search engines they hurt they love they love blogs why because it's always feeding the search engine more food it's like a dog or or better yet a stray animal who comes to your house and you continue to give them food they're gonna keep coming back and they love it that's why this blog works so well because when you give it web log it's an actual ongoing daily journal or whatever your frequency is whenever you give it content the search engines is like hey you got more food for me see now why would you want to use a blog many different ways why you use a blog I guess first way is to get your message out you have a message some message are so you can make money from say you're in real estate say you sell you own a pet grooming business say you own a landscaping business your message is you have a service or product that someone would like to have or need and you want that message delivered to them this is a perfect way to do it perfect way because blogging is such an easy way to get your message across it doesn't have to be about selling something the past the message could be multiple things it could be about causes like what do you mean by causes churches every single church should you be using some type of blog to push the causes like building water wells mission trips see when you have a static website a website that's doesn't move it like a static website very traditional static website is you go there and you get a message and then you get a message and go there and all it is is one page one picture about you the mission statement contact and maybe some FAQ it's very there's that much there's not much meat it's like going it's like if you're hungry and they're giving you like a little piece to taste you know like I want more so those are drawn to wanting you to contact them but not really information rich and search engines don't really like them so much why because it's like the same food like you're if the animal comes back to you and you're giving them the same dirty bone they're like why we're gonna come back tomorrow what blogs on the other hand see when you have sermons every week you have a new message new messages should then be like a web blog put onto the blog updated blogs are a very specific way that every single type of person be it causes causes but the message is still the same getting your word out if you're trying to sell a house maybe you're trying to sell a car you know maybe maybe you do eyelashes as a business and you're like we have a running sale only for this week great way to showcase that so the way you want to use that is you want to use it also for branding branding this here's the deal you just started a business you're sandwich shop down the road how do you differentiate yourself from all the big chains or how do you differentiate yourself from the next sandwich shop.
shop six blocks away. A lot of it comes from branding. Now what is branding? Branding is basically that's the shop with the pastrami sandwich.
That hot dog place is the bomb. If you want a good breakfast sandwich, that's the place. It's branding. You get known for something, but how do you get known for something if you never really update your audience, if you never really show them what you're emphasizing on?
See, the idea with this is if you are marketing to everybody, you market to nobody. But with this, you can continue to hit what you need to do for your core audience, your core target audience, your core niche. Now what is a niche? It's basically who you really try to talk to, your message.
Your message can't talk to everybody. It has to talk to the exact person who has that pain or that discomfort or that need so you can service them. And it doesn't have to be about money. What if your goal is to educate the world about the beauty of mathematics?
What if you feel like you're a math teacher and you're only teaching 30 students per semester and you really want the language, the universal language of math spread more? A perfect way is a blog. Now why use a blog versus some other method of communication or a word to get your branding out? Because they know it's yours.
This is you. And when they try to get your brand out, they're not going to get your message out. They're going to trust you. Trust is built through a brand because let's say you're an awesome math teacher.
You have a really cool way of helping people understand trigonometry and calculus. You put that in your blog and just have lessons. Every time a lesson comes out, it's chronologically ordered. It shows up as you post them and you can group them and organize them for digestion.
But really it's your own class at that point. The blog is a perfect way for you to get that, get that message out and not having to worry about, well, how do I make money? That's not going to do this. How do I maintain that?
A blog is so inexpensive to maintain. There's many different ways to do it. We'll show you some different ways we do it. The thing with the blog is there's a lot of things behind the scene, but a lot of it's prepackaged.
So it's way easier than using a static blog. Okay. So online exposure, you want to do personal branding. And I always love soapbox, you know, soapbox or a bar of soap, soapbox.
If you, if you just got, something on your shoulder, if you just got something on your heart, let's say you're fighting for same sex equality. Let's say you're, you're fighting from minority minorities who get into the workplace. Let's say you're going for, you want to help kids get their driver's license before 18. What if you're trying to lower the drinking age?
If you can fight in a war, why can't you drink? If that's your message, soapbox it. Soapbox is a perfect way to get your message out. on a blog, because you can continue to have more content and more data and more reasons why someone should listen to you because you're building your brand at the same time.
On your soapbox, it can be anything why you should spay and neuter your, your animals, your cats and your dogs. If you just like you, you work at a pound, you're like, man, we really need to fix this. There's too many animals. We need to get the message out.
The message. You. can get the message out on our blog how if you own an animal clinic or a veterinarian you really want to get the message of spay and neutering have a bunch of pictures of animals who keep coming in it's like look we can reduce this type of travesty of having so many uncontrolled dogs and cats in our area just by spay and neutering and then you can push them to a service that you host or that you recommend to solve that problem see it's gathering a tribe of people a collection of people who see what you see who see what you see you understand that you understand that that's like me trying to at my job no joke when I was working I had a push and I was going to push this message onto a blog why don't employees who wash their hands use soap do they think it's clean that's the type of material I put on my blog why to me a father with three kids I want people to wash their hands with soap not just with water makes no sense but common sense doesn't matter you're trying to push a message that you believe in your heart needs to be spoken with and it's not to please everybody it's not to get everybody into that it's to build a brand build trust get the message up and have some causes okay so why why else use a blog okay awesome way to interact with all the other social properties okay so here we go you can use they are the main ways I've been able to just really push your brand your why maybe you're trying to sell some houses maybe you're trying to build a business maybe you're trying to get more funding for your PTA parent teachers Association trying to raise some school funds these are the primary ways of that information using an article like a document or a word document or an essay 500 words 50,000 words a book an e-book it's written okay and then there's video like when someone shoots a video and they have a message hey you need to go pick up your dog crap because that's not allowed in this neighborhood and you post that out in your in your in your community and your subdivision is like oh yeah we need to have strict enforcement if your dog walks on a leash needs to be on a leash you need to pick up the dog poop right that's the video and the images images are like a thousand words you've heard this was a million words you just have images and people were like oh I get it you can interact all three types of these types of vehicles to communicate with another human being on a blog the blog interface with one or all three at the same time this is an easy easy this is an easy way there's no need for crazy coding and I don't know what this hash thing but the super easy if you were to look at this a blog is just a standard website standard website but it includes it can it can include a video have written words and have pictures in it it can have a video it can have words they can have a picture you can have one of or both of all three it doesn't matter that's the flexibility on a blog it interfaces with all of that so if you're really good if you're a really good writer you primarily be doing a lot of writing if you're really good at artistic views and you're really good at taking good shots if you're a good photographer and you're really good at you know what does that picture say to you images but if you're just dead funny on the video and you like to speak more versus writing more you can use a video to do that that's the power of a blog because you can get it out there so much faster easy to implement the blogs are built to accept these types of communication and that's why I gotta be using it okay other thing okay social integration social what is so not your neighbor your neighbor kind of counts okay but here we talk about right did I miss one yeah there's a lot of them okay so these are the big ones I've I've pinpoint because these are the ones I primarily use okay these are the one I use so so social networks which have billions of people the second largest website in the entire world that has more people than every country out there is Facebook everyone and their mom which is funny because there's probably a lot more moms and dads Facebook but there's so many people on Facebook you gotta be using Facebook and you know what all of this all of this blends perfectly with the blog so if you're really good at Facebook like whoosh it's time for me to book yeah I'm really good at Twitter should I be tweeting and also building a blog yes you should be building the blog they all speak to each other they all like each other it's kind of like peas and carrots they're both vegetables they just go together Facebook Google Plus Pinterest Twitter LinkedIn all these Instagram I missed Instagram on there let's go to right Instagram because I use that too there's a lot of different ways pictures social networks words and pictures pictures social Facebook social updates Facebook social days with pictures and video all of this oh I almost forgot YouTube so many different ways to interact with your blog you have the three main ways and these three main ways are then altered on different social methods that then all interact with the blog this is critical if you want to build a strong cause if you want to get on a strong soapbox if you want to help more people see your vision why people should cut the lawns and not bag it because the more you bag your grass clippings the more landfill trash we have that's a good cause right or not watering your lawn every single day that's a good cause and these are the things you can get on a blog because no one can tell you what you can and cannot say unless you don't own the blog this is why it's important to be able to pay for a service that allows you to support your business and to be able to support your business and to be able to speak your mind right well outside of the crazy stuff but some blogs if they're free it's not really free there's restricted speech on there and there's a lot of stuff like they don't want you to sell anything on there well I don't want to go into that that's craziness you want to use a blog that allows you to express yourself with all these different times there's many different types of blogs but I'm going to the general set of what a blog can do social interactions being able to get the content that you like to get the content out that you like to get the content out that you like to get the content out article video images using social media like Facebook Google Plus Pinterest Twitter LinkedIn Instagram and YouTube good so who are the type of people who can use a blog let's really dig down let's see if it's really talking to you if this is really you and do you really need a blog let's check this out I've spoken right first person I like to always think about is the person who is running a nonprofit right like a church so an example would be a nonprofit for a church you have a sermon every say Sunday maybe you do another sermon Saturday a different language a blog is a fantastic way to have your message to your congregation every single week and then you can have that sent to them passively all you have to do is go visit our blog go visit every week just go visit our blog not to give the entire website link because they'll know where it is once they see it and you know what they'll get updates from it they'll see oh this was posted last week oh I missed two weeks ago because I was on vacation oh I was sick that day and I couldn't attend this is a perfect way to get your message to your message to your people your congregation right so another one would be and this is and this is what I focused on when I was part-time as an engineer I wanted to focus on selling so I can get out of engineering which I did at the age of 33 12 years of engineering got out of it and got my wife out of accounting through selling things like what can you really sell on a blog remember there's three types of ways you can actually get information out there right you have eBay sorry article marketing you have video marketing and image marketing so what are the stuff in different ways you can start selling stuff well I mean there's tons of stuff like Etsy there's like Amazon there's like eBay there's info products there's your own products there's a affiliate products let's go on and on and on so you sell things real estate selling homes warranty sales like if you sell life insurance insurance why don't I go into life insurance see life insurance age is cracking me up I we always have a bad stigma oh man that person's coming to me because they're trying to preach to me the whole doom and gloom if you die you do XYZ if you die your kids don't get married if you don't get married you don't get married if you die you do XYZ if you die your kids don't get married if you die your kids don't get married this if well see the thing of the insurance agent there's many different ways you can educate your audience by with the blog of the benefits or showing case studies without actually forcing someone to go hey John if you die you owe this my money blah blah blah a blog can show the benefits of having life insurance and what it can do for you Mary just had her husband pass away she didn't have to pay for the funeral the life insurance kicked in now she's she's able to still have money go to college because I see it's the feel-good people love feel-good right it's like a movie you go in and like oh man John died but then Peggy came in and had the life insurance set up that's how you sell it on a blog but it needs to be constantly updating on different case studies customers you run into testimonials happy clients think about it if you had a static website it is so much harder to update if you have 50 clients that came in and asked you hey this is a fantastic service more people need to know about what you do what you provide a site website will be just kind of hard to update a blob the fantastic way hey last we ever be from Wisconsin sent this video in showing why it's so important to have insurance coverage on your home your automobile and your life and then you just have that testimonial of blog fantastic way to get the information out there It is the fantastic service homes.
Do you sell just one home? Is it just the one home you're trying to sell and that's it for the entire career? No, you sell multiple homes. You need to suit volume.
Maybe you're a rental. There's so many ways. You showcase your properties on the blog. So you have a business card.
Someone goes, hey, I'm new in the area. What are some hot places I can live in in this area? You give them your card. Your blog then has them categorize different areas of the city, different price ranges.
You can even organize a two bedroom, three bedroom, 3,000 square foot and up. What does and does not have a pool? That can all be organized on a blog as a real estate agent selling homes and it's your property. It's your information.
You're building your brand asset expertise. People buy from those that they know, like, and trust. Giving people valuable information without having to chase them down. It's the law of attraction marketing.
Give them value. They see it and they go, huh, that house looks beautiful. And they call you. You're no longer cold calling people.
Do you want to buy a house? Do you want to buy a house? Do you want to buy a house? Do you want to buy a house?
They're like, Donnie, I saw that pool and I saw those palm trees. I'm done. I'm in. Where do I sign?
And that's all passive through marketing on a blog, right? Now all these other places I'm talking about, these are just examples. Like I like Etsy because they sell purses. And women love selling just trinkets and things.
And they're like, Lawrence, how do I sell more of my custom made handbags? And I go, do you have a blog? If you're only putting all your information on a selling website, that's the only type of traffic you get from there, right? And I wouldn't be sending forced traffic to there.
I would send it to your own place so you can control the message, the feel and how it looks. Very important. If you're selling anything on the internet. You got to have a blog.
It's an easy way to share with what other people need. Huh? I need some new tennis shoes. Oh man.
My carpet's dirty. I need a new vacuum cleaner. My cat is always meowing at me because I never have fresh, clean water and they love it when I turn on the faucet for fresh water. Maybe you're selling cat water fountains.
I was selling cat water fountains. How was I doing it? On a blog. The benefits of why your loved kitty cats need a blog.
You got to have a blog. You got to have a blog. It needs fresh water running out of the stream, not sitting in a pool and that can be all conveyed on a blog so you can sell it. Get it?
All right. So one part is selling. One part, this is more online selling. So online selling, most people are familiar with this because they're like, well, how else?
If it's online, I'm going to sell it. This is more traditional, right? But there's many different things like how about landscaping? Right?
How about hair shops? How about service centers? Let's say you own a old change facility down the street. You want to get more people?
Why don't you show all the happy people who go through your website on a blog that's constantly being updated versus a static website that just goes, hi, we're down the street. If you had a blog that constantly had new truck came in, had an issue, we fixed it, here's the testimonial from this customer. Here we have a new coupon coming out next week. It's only available to the first hundred customers.
Easy ways to update and it doesn't take an army of technicians or programmers to run a blog. One person can run this, like myself, I ran my one blog with that and that's awesome because you know why? Once you get good at one blog, what stops you from running hundreds? In 2010, I had over 50 blogs.
Talking to specific niche groups. Why? It doesn't take a lot. You get the content out there, you have different messages, you have different types of audiences and you set the blog out, super inexpensive to set up, easy to maintain and it's there and search engines love it.
Okay, good. All right, so we have non-profit, we have selling, this is more internet based, but then we have the blog. All right. What about the more traditional?
Well, what about accountants? True story, my personal accountant goes, Lawrence, how the heck did you retire so quickly and I see this money coming in, is that really all from online? Like yeah, a lot of it's from advertising, using a blog, promoting services, promoting myself, building myself up as an expertise in my field. You're an expert in your field in accounting, in tax accounting.
Do you want to help with that? So that's the way we have services. With my blog, we have services. With my accountant, I show her, look, you should be marketing with a blog showing here's three stupid, simple ways you can avoid paying extra taxes and probably save yourself at least $3,000.
Here's a way and I'm going to show you my blog and just display it on your blog, either a video or through an article, maybe through some pictures. Make sure you download this form. This form will save you a bunch of money. Your blog post has a post.
You embed it. You just attach. It's super, super simple. You attach the actual attachment for the document that they need.
You just attach it and they can download it. Accountants, lawyers, lawyers, right? Like what if you own, what if you own, like we were talking about a sandwich shop, food. I like to say food trucks.
Food trucks with a blog integrated with social media. That is the awesomeness. That is the magic. That is the awesomeness way to get viral exposure.
Integrating social media, a blog and a … Why? You want one way to collect all the social media into one spot so you have like pictures from Instagram. You have embedded posts from Facebook.
You have a tweet back that goes back to your blog. It all comes back to your blog which then you have the most control over. The social media is like Facebook, Google. You don't have control over that.
That's just a platform that … This is fully customizable. Remember, articles, videos, pictures, all so you can get your message to your core audience. This is …
Food trucks, they can be a sandwich shop. They can be, maybe you just bought a local chain restaurant. Different ways that any traditional business would need a blog running specials. We are a grand opening.
Grocery stores, why we have the best organic selection in town. Check out what we have. As someone watching your blog goes, I didn't know they have organic watermelons. And you just showcase the watermelons.
That's such an easy way to continue to update versus some really heavy, thick, HTML written website where the owner of the restaurant or the store wants an update, they have to call the designer. Call the designer. Call the programmer. I want to add this.
No. With the blog, it's as easy as you go in, type, type, type, type, type, review it, publish. That's it. And it's so easy so much that in a blog, you can type, type, type, type, embed your stuff, put your pictures and your videos and go, I want to schedule this for release next week because this week I'm on vacation.
Many different powerful tools in a blog. You don't need an army of people to maintain it and it is a website. With this, we've defined what is a blog, why you use it and who should use it. Many traditional types, many, many internet types and I especially love the causes, the non-profits.
Everyone should be using a blog. There's really no excuse. It's super, super simple to use. The message is still the same but it's easier to be found.
Google, Bing, Yahoo. They want to give you more traffic. They want to give you more eyeballs, more people searching for your information. A blog is a perfect way because it's constantly being updated.
Like a web blog, it's constantly being updated and the more content you have, the better chances of one of those pieces of content will be found by your target audience. This is a fantastic way to connect. My name is Lawrence Tam. See you in the next one.
Hey, this is Lawrence Tam and thank you for watching the previous video about why you should be using a blog, who can be using a blog and what exactly is a blog. This recap is a super simple way to get your message out. Anyone can use it. If you're trying to make money from it or if you're just trying to push a cause or if you're just trying to get people to like you and follow you and build a brand, fantastic way, super simple to set up.
I want to go into the basic principles of blog versus a standard website because some of you actually have a website. Some of you are so scared of getting a website, you just don't do anything. Some of you know you need to get started. You know you need to get some kind of information on the internet and you're frozen.
Let me help you get past that and why a blog is super simple. Really, these are both websites. A blog and a standard HTML custom site, they're the same thing. You can customize a blog, but blogs are built to make it super simple for anybody to get on, plug in, get your information out there, start typing, start putting pictures out there or start shooting videos.
Remember, it takes all three types of content. Let's go through the first reason why blogs and standard websites, I prefer a blog. You ready? Number one, communication.
Two-way versus one-way. What am I getting at? Two-way versus one-way, what does that really mean? See, a blog is built to interact with your customers, your potential clients, your guests, your congregation.
Because blogs have a commenting box built in because they want you or they, the website of the blog is built in naturally to communicate. Let's say you have an awesome recipe to make chocolate chip cookies and you put this recipe up and you have an image and you shoot a quick video on how you mix something and you have an article that actually displays the ingredients and you put it on there and then people go, I've tried it but I keep burning it or I've done it and it's always too chalky. And they comment on your blog.
The blog is built so it's an easy two-way communication street. Two-way communication street between you and the potential reader. And this person can be coming from somewhere on Google who just searched chocolate chip cookies or maybe you had just told someone, you had a business card, well, I do recipes on my blog and you gave it to them and you just posted a chocolate chip cookie recipe one time and they read it and they're like, that's where you come in. A custom site.
A custom site is custom. You have to physically build it in. It's not out of the box. It's not as simple.
You have to get a designer to do it for you. You have to size it, move the box a little bit. It's all custom stuff. This is stupid simple, so easy.
The natural order of a blog is built in interaction, communicating with your core audience because if you market to everyone, you market to no one. And in blogging, it's a marketing tool to get traffic. So if you sell houses and you display a beautiful house with all of its benefits and where its school resides and how well it's been maintained and someone communicates, they can ask questions right there and you can communicate with them in an open forum and people see, wow, there's people who want this house. I got to go up and get there and bid on that house quickly.
You can actually have updates to the original piece of content either in the blog or through the comments. The communication level is way easier in a blog. Okay. Let's go with this.
All right. We had talked about search engines. I'm going to go ahead and just focus on Google for now. But search engines, basically, these are the search engines that are like, you go to Deng or let's just go Google.com.
They're like, how do I find a way to find a man? How do I tie my shoes without using the double ears? There's just different things that people search and when they search, Google is trying to find pieces of content. They're trying to find pieces of content on the internet, basically a website.
Remember, blogs are websites. What is the easiest way for you to be found? Putting out multiple pieces of bait, basically. In a blog, let's just, for visual representation, say we're fishing and we're looking for someone who is …
We're a chef and we just want to spread the goodwill of making really good brownies. We have one, two, three, four, five, six brownie, six brownie recipes. But over here, you only have one because that's just the one. It's just one big one.
Having to update this, calling your designer, hey, can you update this real quick, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You will get this amount of work way done faster, easier, cheaper, done by yourself versus hiring somebody to do something static. This then goes into play. This then goes into play with the search engine.
It's all about eyeballs, right? Google has an audience. The audience is everyone who's searching. Billions of people search a day.
Billions. Google has that audience. Google then has the audience's eyeballs. They tell the eyeballs, us people, people searching, where to look.
Who has a better chance to getting their information seen? The one who only has one major piece of content or one that has six because of speed, because it's easy to do, because you can do articles, videos. There's no waiting time on getting designer. Obviously, this one is going to win because there's a bigger opportunity to have one of these brownie recipes being found by Google because Google's like, wow, there's six over here versus one.
These are going to have what we call internal pages, internal pieces of content. Yeah. They're internal. It's like having a parking lot and having hundreds of cars in there.
You're stacking material. You're stacking automobiles in a parking lot. This is where it's at. You don't have to stop at six.
You can have 76 brownie recipes. That gives you 76 different opportunities for Google to see you. How much faster is it to do this than to do one of these? A standard website.
It's so much harder. So, if you specialize in houses and you're like, I'm going to do this. And you have a hundred houses to sell. This is the way to do it.
This is the way to do it. Not bad. An example for a real estate agent. Let's not go with brownies.
Let's just go with, you only have one showing. It's a $300,000 house. Okay. Okay.
Now it looks even, but it's not. This $300,000 house has a much higher chance of being sold here. Why? What you can do is, you can build all these internal pieces of content.
Writing a page on floors. Just the floors in each room. We don't have one post that talks about this house that's cost $300,000 on Glendale or whatever. But then you have all these other posts that talk about pieces of that post.
It's kind of like transformers. When they come together, they're stronger. Actually, not transformers. It's Voltron.
When they come together, it's like, boom, they're bigger. Like a Constructicon in transformers. When they come together, it builds this one piece up even bigger. Piece one.
Piece two. Piece three. Piece four. Piece five.
Piece six. Piece seven. There's no limit to that. You can have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Seven days, seven different posts with articles, videos, and content on it. Each of them all going to the one listing you want to show on the internet. Google then has a better opportunity to see this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, and this. This is different ways we do SEO.
But what this does is it makes this one look really important because multiple, let's say children or babies, I could call them. They're all content rich. People are looking at this. But they're all flowing back to one big page.
Where a traditional page, it's just one page. You got basically one shop to find that. One shop. This way, it's a much easier way.
You're throwing out different types of bait. Someone's like, I'm just looking for hardware floors in Southwest Houston. Boom. I'm only looking for bonus rooms because I know most bonus rooms don't come because the new homes don't have bonus rooms in this area, but they're only built in like 1980 to 1985.
They're looking for bonus room. This room has a bonus room. Boom. You got a bonus.
See, you can have a breakdown specifically just to sell one thing, but because you're building content underneath one, all it is is a matter of putting the content on there, putting the content on there, putting the … All built into a blog, super easy, and then have them all connect to the main piece of content where you're trying to sell the house. Okay? Does this make sense?
This is what we call ranking an internal page versus just the one big page. If you take this a step further, let's say a website called … Your website is happy.com. That's your website.
Also, it's over here. This one only has one major website. We call it the top level domain. It's the top.
It's the top. It's the top. That's all you see. When Google goes, it's just the dot com.
All it is is the dot com. Right? But this one has happy.com slash smiles, happy.com slash pictures, happy.com slash social, happy.com slash family. What I'm doing here is, with the blog, inherently, it's built in off the bat.
You can build a whole subset of blog posts on family, a whole subset on social media, a whole subset of just pictures, a whole … I said subset, based off of the main domain of happy.com. Not to say if you own happy.com. It's just an example.
Or smile. Maybe this has images. This has video. All of this then flows up, and in the eyes of Google, which is, we're trying to play the game of, hey Google, I am important, so give me your eyeballs, give me your audience, give it to me for free, traffic, maybe it's your word, maybe it's your message, your sermon, whatever it is.
All these pieces all flow up back to the main domain structure. The main domain strengthening it. It's just one piece. There's nothing reinforcing.
Google sees the complexity of you having all these other ones that are getting traffic, getting eyeballs, getting views, has people who are engaged on it, but they're all going to something that's like, wow, that must be even more important. That's the way you get traffic, just by building content that's related to what you want to do. Just continue to build content. Okay?
The internal page is building the main page. In a nutshell, what this works is, as you continue to build your blog, you're building your entire web site. Here, it's like, when you build it, you're done. I'm done.
Time to go home. No. You build it, and you continue to build it to get more and more and more and more traffic. Google loves you.
Google loves you more. Google loves you the most. By keep building more. The static one, we call it static versus dynamic.
It's not built to continue to grow. It's just a stale piece of bread. This is like, it's fresh baked. Come and get it.
You keep building and building. Good. All right. Now, a question we get a lot, is it okay to have multiple blogs?
It is, of course, because blogs are super fast to set up. Super slow. You've got to outsource it. It's custom HTML.
You better be a good coder. You have to understand uploading, downloading, hosting. It's a ridiculous amount. It's a lot of work.
Super fast. In my heyday, I had almost 50 blogs, all on different niches, like selling cat water, like cat water fountains. Super fast setup. What if you had blog number one, blog number two, blog number three, and then you have your new blog?
These are blogs. Let's just say you have multiple blogs. You can actually point them to your new blog. What does that really mean?
Here's an example. You have a blog on cats, a blog on dogs, a blog on birds. Let's just say you just love animals. You just love animals.
You have a blog on cats, a blog on dogs, and a blog on birds. Now you go, I have a blog on pet supplies. Let's say you're like a … Let's say you're like a pet dealer.
You distribute pet goods, like pet houses. Maybe you are an exclusive person who is looking to sell cat tree houses, those 72 inch, super tall trees. Not tree, but it's like a custom house for a cat. They're like hundreds of dollars.
That's what you sell. What you do is you build content for cats, dogs, and birds, and they all flow into pet supplies, so you can sell a cat house. You can do that. What this does is it gives you a bonus, not an X, a plus.
It gives you a bonus, a bonus, a bonus. What is that bonus? The bonus really is for Google. Google goes, wow, you have these websites now going to a pet supply store.
This store must be pretty important because you have all these other ones that are getting traffic, getting visitors. There's people who are loving it. I'm already sending people there. I'm probably going to start sending people here.
Way harder to do. Why? Because the speed, there's no speed. It's slow.
How would you start doing it? You can't. To be able to focus that … An example for a real estate agent, you have different neighborhoods.
You have neighborhood one, neighborhood two, neighborhood three, all going to … Here's what I did. Neighborhood one, neighborhood two, neighborhood three, maybe they're specific neighborhoods that you work in with specific house listings, but they all point to a blog about you. Educating buyers, don't mess up or you'll miss this and you'll get the wrong floor type.
Don't mess up or you'll lose thousands of dollars in closing. You help people buy a home and save money, that's your goal, and you have these listings. These listings go to build you as the brand because now all this traffic is going to you in your blog. See, the thing is, these are all blogs, but we can now just call them websites.
There's no difference. It's just that blogs are super easy to upgrade and maintain and fill with content so Google will find it. Pop, definitely okay to have multiple blogs and they can interact with each other. Now, another question is, does a blog have to be unique?
Does a blog have to be you? No, it doesn't have to be you. It can be an organization, it can be a community. An example would be a school.
If a PTA board wanted to really get people to engage, why don't they build a blog? The blog has the ability to take on donations. It takes the ability for donations. It also has…
What's that? with hard donations like to fundraisers donations fundraisers how about um so since i do donate my time to pta i kind of know what this stuff does so a community blog right it's not a single person it's a community that goes to a blog that blog then has information about donations the different donations are looking for we need kleenex for third grade fundraisers we are we are running low on funds to prepare the fence on the school ground and we're looking for oh true story fund raiser we're looking to build a canopy over the kids playground unit right and then the quotes were like 10k to thirty thousand dollars but we needed to fundraise for it the best way is if you have a community of people who are in the school system you just send them to the blog and so here's the big fundraiser we're looking to fund people if they see the the vision if they see the vision that's goal of this bread company this센 disorders mon statistic that goes with it the cause they will donate the money to get that because their kids don't get sunburned versus just saying hey we're fundraising give us some money no you have to be very specific and you can show them exactly what you're you're exactly because it changes every year exactly what you're going to buy how much it costs who you're quoting for that's a great way of donations help volunteer we need um um help and volunteer like room moms hey fourth grade we especially need someone to help on the track date that they have when can you sign up oh like my wife she signed up for first grade reading first grade reading so like she signed up for a date to read to the class all of this can be put on a blog easily found updated on the fly per semester per year per need this is just an example you don't have to just use it on school systems it can be communicated communities, it can be outreach, it can be anything you want it.
Why? It's super fast, super easy, and the main goal is getting the three types of content, video, articles, and pictures to your core audience. This is important because it doesn't have to be, oh, I only have to build a blog about me. I'm not good.
I don't look good in a picture. I don't want my face on a website. It can be a community. It can just be like a spay and neuter.
Spay and neuter your animals community. It can be anything. This is important because if you really have a larger vision, don't let, I have to have some fancy website where I spend thousands of dollars getting it designed and uploaded and custom. No, you don't get any of this.
Just get a blog. The last one we want to go is for this section, oh, let's go into speed. Let's go into speed. Because we talk about this space.
We talked about speed in this, and then towards the end of the video, we talked about what is it like to build your website? Build that space. I'm going to go to speed, let's go into speed, because we talked about this space here. We talked about this space here.
Let's go into speed. Let's go into speed. Let's go into speed. I'm going to go to speed.
Let's go into speed. Let's being slow this being fast let's talk about speed okay so a lot of you who are thinking okay I get it I get it website is a blog a blog is a website blog is super easy to maintain only one person's product is needed to run it I mean Lawrence ran multiples right super easy but speed speed doesn't matter unless you actually do it you gotta do something okay so speed of zero it's still zero so make sure you're doing something and the way to get better at building your blog is just to do that's all it is see what the standard website is really hard to correct and adjust so it's kind of like we have a rocket so you're a rocket right and it's firing from earth there's not one straight shot that I go through and it's gonna go through and it's gonna go through and it's gonna go through to the moon you do understand that right it takes multiple adjustments the faster you make your adjustments the smoother it looks and it's like oh it took one shot not really thousands of adjust adjustments to get to the moon it's never a straight shot same thing for building your website this blog is way easier to get to your destination because you're doing right I was that's like I did it and I'm like hmm now what do you do how do you fix it how do you it's harder to get the feedback and adjustments where a blog just by doing I mean really writing articles posting some images really posting content the more content you push out there the faster you understand like wow people aren't really attached to this people really love that sermon people people really love the way that we did x y and z that's this being able to quickly adjust your track where a standard website would just go straight into the abyss where Rockets like a blog it's constantly being readjusted just by doing because in the process of building more content making your website look bigger making Google go wow you're an Authority you must be really important because you have so many of these pages pointing to your main Domain it happens just by doing it websites inherently aren't built like that they're not built to build more content to make bigger, it's too hard to do it.
I don't know anybody who starts off going straight to a website like this and continues doing it because it's so difficult to maintain, especially scale up, where blog is meant to do that. So definitely for speed. Another way to get better and faster is emulation. So a lot of you, let's say you're in church, right?
You run a church and you're like, I just, I don't know, okay, I got the blog. It's super easy. I just hit a couple of things and boom, the blog showed up. It's like, but I don't really know how to write well.
I don't really, you know, I'm just not really good about conveying my message. I'm really good in front of the congregation live on Sunday, but I'm just not really good on, you know, on a computer because whatever the excuse, I'm going to help you with that excuse. Emulate someone you respect, right? So if you are building a church, emulate a bigger church, how they write, what they post, images.
They use the type of interaction they have with their people. It's just quick emulation. This is really easy to mimic because you can adjust, like you said, it's always about adjustments. You can adjust it very quickly on how you write, what kind of videos you're using, what kind of pictures you're using.
Emulation. You don't have to be stuck going. I have to be perfect. No, you don't.
Everyone understands you. It's not about being perfect. It's about doing getting your message out. People accept it.
Go ahead and emulate it. Right? Next thing is. You actually get a faster following.
A lot of this comes built in to a blog because if you're, let's say you have one piece of content here and here you have a hundred piece of content. But what does that really mean? Like this gargantuan website is just one big blog customized website where this one's like it's got a hundred different posts from a hundred different days, different websites, different videos and images. Your following will follow you faster because you have all going content and they can come in at any point and go back in the past or stay current.
Your followers are growing faster inherit because it's chronological. It's built. It's built to build audiences, a blog, a website. Not so much.
It's usually like, let me just build a building and I'm done. It's done. Not worth this. Our blog is, is built um…
is built to have a ton of content, the more content you put on there, the faster the following comes on. And of course, speed comes from content of you. The blog is so much easier to get the content out there. It's so much easier, easier.
So much easier. So the hang up of trying to build something beautiful, one time, one shot, one chance of getting someone to your basic website. This is built to be on the fly and like a rocket, super fast, getting to your core audience and it can be done by you or someone you hire. But it doesn't take an army like a website does because if something fails, this is way easier to maintain and establish.
All right, let's go on to, I like the word, I like the word. Easy. You like the word easy? What makes a blog so easy?
Well, for one, loves fresh meat. It's like going to a bakery and you come over here and they have the same slice of bread two months ago and you're like, no thank you. Over here, we bake fresh every morning at 4 a.m. straight to you because regular posts of posts, we call them content, it's constantly being updated.
Google's like, wow, you gave me some more stuff. Wow, you fed me again. It's inherently built for this, so it gives you more traffic, easy to use, easy to maintain, easy to build the audience and build that traffic. The other thing I like about a blog versus a standard website that has all coding is what you see is what you get.
What I see is what I get. What I see, oh, spelled it wrong. What I see is what I get. Basically, if I want to make something a little bolder, I hit bold.
It's kind of like using a Word document. It should look bold. Hey, I want this font larger. Let me just increase the font like a Word document.
What I see is what I get. Here, it's like, okay, let me put the bracket, let me put the font, let me put font number 25, and Tahoma red, let me type in the red. You gotta type all that stuff in. Here, it's just like a Word document.
I want it bolded, I want it italicized. It's what you see with formatting. I want it paragraphed, I want to put a bullet on it. Super easy.
It's super simple. Implements it quickly because most of us are, we already know how to use a Word processing software like Word or OpenOffice. You just type in, oh, I'm gonna change this for a Word doc. Everyone who went through school in the last 20 years knows how to use a Word processing piece of software.
Boom, built right in. This one's gotta be customized. Super easy. So, another piece to this is a blog is built out of a box to be very fast, simplistic, right?
It's built, it's built to get you results. See, it's a lot of times people build these websites and they're so convoluted, there's so much stuff. They're like, there's 50 million buttons here. I don't, I'm, like as the viewer, like I'm coming here, I'm looking at this, I'm like, I'm stuck.
Most traditional blogs, it's super basic, can be customized, but normally if you do it the right way and the way we teach you, super easy. Generally, you have a header and then a sidebar and then you have your content here. Super fast, built in, you don't have to like, how do I program that sidebar? How?
All this is built in, easy, you can get this source so quickly or just have it built in, done through the blog itself. Very simple so you can get up and running. We're a standard blog. You're like, well, I want this special thing here.
It gets out of hand. Do you want it to be super crazy complex and hard to maintain or super easy to maintain, clean lines? And the main thing you're trying to do is win people over, maybe make some money, influence, soapbox, whatever it is. What's your opinion?
And the best way to get this model to work, the best, best way, I'm going to use a different color so I can emphasize this, because this works. We've established this works by building more content, it establishes the main domain. But how does this work? It works by content.
You get the content on here and you get good content and you keep feeding the content. You get the content to the website so Google can see it. And other people from social engines can see it. They all come in and share it.
This simple piece of software that looks simplistic is because it's all built in. It's easy. It's fast. It's ready out of the box to help you get the audience you need, maybe make some money, and influence.
This is super important. And the content is here, which is super easy to do in a blog. Because inherently, it's built to accept more content on a regular basis. Standard websites, not so much.
This is why we use a blog versus a standard website. So if you have a standard website, you don't leave it there, don't trash it. I would just point a link to your blog, give it some of the link juice, we can describe what that is. But really, keep your blog, it's just another website that's just super easy to maintain.
My name is Lawrence Tan. My approval goes to a standard blog. Anyone can use it, even part-time. Hey, Lawrence Tan here again.
And I want to go over how do you build a better blog, get you out of the stuck mode of I don't know what to do, how to make it better. I'm afraid it's not going to look good. I'm afraid it's not going to perform. Let's get past all that.
How do you build a better blog? Number one, let's go after a niche. What is a niche? A niche is like a little piece of your room that's like…
A niche is a very specific topic. Christians, dogs. German shepherds. High-end cars.
Porsches. Houses. Houses over a million dollars in Sugar Land. The niche is you want to take a subject and you want to get very specific.
Now, I talked about this. If you market to everybody, you market to nobody. If you want to market to cars, good luck. Because there's a bajillion dealerships and auto manufacturers and car parts and tuners.
And movies. There's just so many things that deal with cars. But what if you just want to sell… You sell a very specific item.
What if you sell a turbo kit for a Porsche, right? That's all you sell. Well, from cars to a turbo kit, like you're a turbo kit manufacturer, that's a way better way to do it. Well, how about…
How about… Health. Say the general topic is health, but you're a dietitian. You teach people how to go vegan.
How do they eat more green? How do they go paleo? That's the niche. You got to go into the niche.
Now, some might say, well, if you go too deep into the niche, there's not enough traffic. There's not enough people there. Well, that depends, right? Do you want to be seen by nobody?
Or do you want to be the authority of somebody, right? And the thing is, when I say authority, all I'm saying is you're a reference in that niche. It's really hard to be the reference for everything that is health, right? Of course, there's some who rise to the occasion and become like the health guru.
But it's much easier for you to go into a market and be very, very specific how to eat vegan, how to cook chicken the best way using only natural herbs and spices. How do you barbecue with just using oranges and not using lemons? And it can be whatever weird thing that you do, but I guarantee it, if you do it, someone else probably does it too. Whatever weird thing you do.
I… Like, what if you were a group of dog lovers who love tickling their dogs under their chests while they sing to them? If you do this, there's a good chance someone else does that. You can go from animals to tickling your dog as you sing to them.
And remember, it doesn't have to be about making money. It's your soapbox, about you giving your passion out there. And that leads me to make sure you do it about passion. Right?
Because if it's not passion, it better be about money. This is what I learned since doing business since 2009. There's a dividing line. Sometimes, if you're lucky enough, you can do both.
But most times, people go after money and there's no passion into it. Or they go into passion and there's no money into it. And it's hard. It's really hard to…
If you're really passionate about gift wrap, like you just love wrapping presents. But there's really no money. Let's just say, I don't know if that industry does or does not. It's just as an example.
I wouldn't think so. But you just love gift wrapping. But there's no money in it. It's really hard to stay there.
But the passion sticks you there because you like doing it anyways. You would have done it regardless if you get paid or not. Some of you do things for money. Say like you sell houses, but you hate doing it because you hate showing the house, help clean it up, help listen to it.
But you do it because it's a living. But to do both, that's when it all comes together. And the thing is, these eventually, you will find a way to monetize it. You will eventually find a way to start loving the things you do as long as you figure out what really makes you money and how it can help you and is that a passion of yours.
And then if your passion is gift wrapping, maybe you just need to find a different angle, different way to monetize to make money in it. So I say don't give up on your passions for sure because you would have done it regardless. And blogging is so inexpensive to set up and use to get traffic. And if you're making money with something, you can use that money to start building other passions you have.
This is important because this builds your niche. Whatever it is. Whatever it is. You love the gospel of Luke and you want more people to read about the gospel of Luke.
Definitely can do that. Or if you just love the fact that, you know, your Ford Mustang, you know, boss is so awesome. You just have a huge passion of having people understand the beauty of driving a Ford Mustang. Or you just love minivans.
Whatever it is, your passion is there. You can monetize it later. Tons of different ways to monetize. The harder part is finding money because so many people get stuck in the static website and they never get to the money part.
Right? And they never get to getting content out there and they get stuck. Passion will help you. The blog, the better blog will help you with not having a static website but a dynamic one building that content up.
Okay? So, what these niches, we got to find a keyword. Now, what is a keyword? A keyword is the exact specific saying someone is looking for right now on Google or in the past or possibly in the future.
That's a keyword. Okay? Let's go with that. So, to have a niche, we want to be able to give you a keyword.
Now, what is a keyword? It's a keyword. The keyword, if your niche was food trucks, taco food trucks, okay? But your keyword was best fish tacos in Houston, Texas, south of the border.
How is it south of the border? South of the woodlands. All right? So, maybe your keyword is like fish taco truck Houston.
Very specific. Location, type, type of restaurant. Not kind of just taco, fish taco. But what if this is your, like you just love making fish tacos and that's your specialty and you just know your clients love it.
Why don't that be your keyword? It's very specific. It's very regionalized. This niche will play in if you're in the restaurant business and selling food.
You got to have the keyword. The keyword expands because remember Google, Google can't read your mind. Google doesn't know what your niche website is about. Are you selling houses or are you selling dollhouses?
Are you selling cars or are you selling remote control cars? They don't really know until you pick and focus on a specific keyword per piece of content. Now blog, the way it's built, you got a bajillion pieces of content. Just make sure each one has a specific keyword.
When you have a static website, it's like one website, one keyword. Maybe your company name. That's the only keyword you're probably focusing on. But a blog, you can have multiples of these.
That's a cool thing. Fish taco truck Houston. Bean and cheese to go. Best chalupa in Sugar Land.
Rice in Sugar Land. Beans. As you can see, location, type, it's a type of restaurant, right? Type of food.
Bean and cheese to go. What if someone's like, man, I'm really digging to just, I don't want to eat in a restaurant for bean and cheese. That's kind of ridiculous. I just want some good bean and cheese tacos to go.
But maybe you don't want to focus on tacos. Maybe you do bean and cheese like enchiladas. Maybe you do bean and cheese like burgers. Bean and cheese and rice.
Maybe you're just really good with bean and cheese. So then you want to focus on bean and cheese to go because you're like a takeout joint. Here, best chalupa in Sugar Land. It's got location.
It's got a very specific type of food. But you're looking at best. Why is that? See, all of this triggers something inside the head of someone searching.
It's the brain. It's the brain. All right? I call it the brain.
You can actually get into the head of the person searching for this and you can pre-frame them to buy from you. All from a blog. All from a blog because you used a keyword. Example is best.
When you type in best, this person is looking for the best chalupa in Sugar Land. Not just a chalupa. The best chalupa. And if you had a blog post, a blog, and you had an article that had some videos of you making it and some pictures and some testimonials and some happy customers, and you just show you are the best chalupa in Sugar Land, this person goes, I was looking for the best chalupa.
Now I get to eat the best chalupa in Sugar Land. You see what I'm saying? You make money in business by solving people's problems. This person's specific problem was I'm looking for, and they typed in, they typed in best chalupa in Sugar Land, and you knew, you targeted that keyword, and you had an article, because blogs are built to have multiple pieces of content, not just one like a static website, but a big blog with a lot of content.
This is a match made in heaven. Because they're looking for it, you provided it, you have a service or a product, you solved this customer's problem, and they were looking for the best chalupa in Sugar Land. Now the cool thing is, if this turns out to be good, you just start, wow, people really like the best chalupa, what if your website gets so big, you're just known for best chalupa? What if you just get, no, because your website has so many pieces of content about best chalupa in Woodlands, best chalupa in Dallas, best chalupa in Texas, and then Google's like, I get it, your website's about the best chalupa, and it starts to send you best chalupa.
Best chalupa has way more traffic than best chalupa in Sugar Land, because this is very specific in a region. This is just, in the entire universe, who has the best chalupa? Now you get it. But what if Google goes, man, you've got so much good content that talks about the best chalupa, I'm gonna make sure you're found when people just type in chalupa.
So if we had to go in keywords, how those work, in a broad sense, there is some circumstances where it might change, but broad sense, this is an easy way, okay? As the keyword gets longer, the traffic goes down with it. What does that mean? So if your keyword here was chalupa, right?
There's more traffic on top, because it's a single word, billions of websites have chalupa, best chalupa, chalupa ingredients, chalupa recipes, chalupa south side, hot chalupa, crunchy chalupa. There's a lot of words, a lot of sentences that have chalupa, so a lot of websites will have a lot more websites, that have the word chalupa. But if you go in down to best, you see that? Best chalupa in Mexico, you get a longer keyword, that actual keyword is longer, so someone has to type this entire piece out, it's longer, you're gonna get less traffic, but there's a really cool relationship with this.
The cool relationship, is you get closer to the buyers, now the buyer doesn't have to be someone who pays you money, the buyer could be someone in your congregation at church, they're buying into your sermon, it doesn't have to be about money, I'm not saying, it could be about a cause, they're buying into spaying and neutering your kids, it's buying into changing your oil every, you know, three months, it's buying into, you know, donating your shoes to goodwill, it's buying into helping your community, it's buying into typing at 10%, you buy in with money and thoughts and ideas, the closer you go into a long, we call this a long tail, that is gonna help you, so you're not gonna feel like, man, there's a billion websites that have the word Chalupa, how am I gonna be one of the blog posts that can be found of billions?
Get specific, it's the niche, this niche, as you build this up, if you continue to build this up, maybe that word is in thousands of your web posts and your niche, you start to get bigger and bigger and you start to level up until eventually, you hit the word Chalupa, if that's your goal, you wanna be the Chalupa king, you can do it, you can be the Chalupa king, but start with the niche because we want you to be found, it's super easy, using it with the blog, it's built in, Google wants more content, Google wants this, what are the chances of full static website, static website, will have a website that specifies its focus on best Chalupa in Mexico?
Probably zero to none, but a blog post, it's built in to have multiple entries, boom, you can write it in 10 minutes, add a couple pictures, add your recipe, add some testimonials, you're done, boom, Google's like, no one gives, Google is the entity who's trying to get their viewers, people who are typing, what they want, they wanna give them a good user experience, and Google's like, no one is giving me content, so instead of giving them the best content, Google's like, here's my best guess, I think that's it, but as you get more specific, Google's like, you actually got the exact keyword, this guy from Georgia, he typed that in, I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna connect you two, you guys are a perfect match, so your guy here, and here's your website, what this is is, Google's a matchmaker, that's all it is, Google just wants to get the person in their brain, once they type it, hit enter, Google in a split second has to figure out, who is the best person, best website, to give to this person, who can solve this person's problem, if he's searching for best chalupa in South Africa, and there's no one who provides that exact match, but when you do, they're like, ding, ding, ding, Google's like, ha, I knew someone was gonna type that out, and then they match it, Google is a matchmaker, like a dating service, you know, so when Google does that, Google as a service, wins confidence from the user, even though they use it for free, but they have a different service, different monetization angle, that user's like, Google's awesome, I was looking for this, and I found it, the exact one, specifically what I was looking for, I'm gonna keep using Google, now for you, you wanna be on Google's good graces, on search engine optimization, one way to optimize, get a keyword, people are searching for, get a keyword, you can win, even though traffic goes down, in a long tail keyword, this is winnable, why?
As, the long tail goes down, as traffic follows it, not as much traffic, and more buyers, but it's, easier, it gets easier, and easier to rank, why? There's less competition, less traffic, but it's easier to rank, you keep ranking the small, low hanging fruit, alright, here we go, these are topics, how can you find some quick, quick, super quick, super ninja keywords, alright, let's go, so you can start, and then, you can, right after this video, you can start with a keyword, alright, I'm gonna show you right now, super simple, don't need a key, I don't need a, a computer to show you how this, this works, now I do it, so we type in Google, and then it has a search bar, and then it has another button that says like, maybe search, or depending on what they, they name it, type something in there, don't type, like I, my dad does this, he'll type in, like, say it's like, how, how to, how to get to the woodlands, he'll type, he'll look down at the keyboard and go, how, to, get, to, even though, Google has something called, auto, suggest, what it means is, if you just type in like one word, Google is gonna start thinking, oh, he must think, how to make pancakes, and so it was like, how to make pancakes, but as you type more words, in here, it's gonna start suggesting, different things, on what you type, those, are your starting point, for keywords, I wouldn't just use a keyword that has one word, that's hard, think about it, cars, red cars, black cars, Mustang cars, Ford cars, Japanese cars, old cars, damaged cars, cars that are wrecked, cars that, there's so many words that use cars, but what if your, word had, fun words, and it was like, how, to, buy, used, cars, online, it has more words, it has more words, it's a little small, it's more words, you're gonna have an, easier time, ranking this, rank, when I say rank, it means, when I say rank, it means, when I say rank, it means, when I say rank, it means, allowing Google, to have you found, easier, because remember, when you do a search in Google, under Google, it'll give you, it's search results, but it's, it's like, ordered in, one, two, three, you don't see the one or two, but it's really just like, first website, second website, third website, fourth website, fifth website, it goes down in preference, when I say rank, the higher you go up, in the search results, the more, like, I believe, in one study I saw, it was like, more than like, 45%, click that first link, so, if you have, 10,000 people, searching for a word, every single day, and that first spot, it's 45%, you wanna be the first spot, well, to rank higher, you have to give, Google, what it believes, its users want, and the first thing it wants, is, very specified keywords, that the, that the user's actually looking for, and one way to do it, go to Google, just start typing, and the auto suggest, in Google, will give you ideas, copy them down, and build your blog on that, if you're selling houses, if you're selling purses, if, you know, if you're, raising funds for the school, these are the keywords, because why?
Google suggests it, because, it has had other people, type it in, and hit search, it knows, don't go against the grain, go with the flow, Google is telling you, exactly, what people are searching for, right now, use its suggestion, cool, next thing, how to build a better blog, I like to teach this, end, in, I'm gonna erase that, what is this really, end in mind, know, what you want, from your blog, are you trying to raise funds, are you trying to, alert people, of the cause, are you drinking, poor water, in your city, are you trying to help people, not water the lawns, in the morning, what is your, end in mind, what is your goal, what do you want, your website to do, I mean, is it to make money, money, is it to influence, right, is it to win, the popular, vote, is it to become, famous, what do you want, have the end goal, in mind, so, when you're building, your blog, your blog, is, your blog, will all, gravitate, towards, your end in mind, when people get this, all mixed up, they're like, you know, I just want to save the world, but then they keep, trying to make money on it, there's a, there's a conflict, right, or someone's like, you know, I don't want to make money, but the real passion was, you know, to stay home, but didn't even know, how much money they needed, per month, gotta be very specific, if you need, 10,000 in a month, every single month, to stay home, what's your end goal, your blog, will focus, and build, what it needs to build, to get there, have, the end in mind, if you do that, get specific, using the blog, as a tool, to convey your message, it's a much easier way, to build influence, maybe even make some money, cool, if you don't have this, you're gonna have, you're gonna be entering, wanderlessly, and go, well, I kind of ended up, in square zero, because you don't have, a real, defined route, now, it might need, corrections, just like a rocket, to go into the moon, but you kind of know, where you wanna go, with that, do you wanna help people, do you really wanna, just show people, you know, how to cut hair, at home, whatever it is, influencing, how to's, all very important, okay, one way, to also, build a better blog, is called, valuable content, val, u, a, ble, content, and, so many people, get confused, very simple, valuable content, is something, you read, and go, I wanna bookmark that, or, I wanna share it, on Facebook, or, my friend, Susie, needs to read this, this is important stuff, because, you want, valuable content, not, spam, see, this stuff, is short-lived, people might see it, for today, or, maybe, people might see it, for today, but, it's not gonna live, valuable content, is shared, what is valuable content, if you're a, mortgage, let's say, you're a real estate agent, and, valuable content is, how to pick, the perfect, house, for feng shui, rules, so, let's say, it's a, how to, I don't know, how to, but, close, how to feng shui, how to pick, a feng shui, a feng shui house, so, this, I've been going through this, right now, my dad's like, you gotta hire a specialist, I don't even believe this stuff, but, the thing is, the house, I'm probably gonna sell this to, in the future, is probably someone, who might be interested, in feng shui, it's very important, so, let's say, you're a real estate agent, and you know, Houston's got a huge, Asian population, and the chances, of someone buying your house, will probably be Asian, is like, I don't think it's important, to have your house feng shui, for resale values, or if it's an investment property, or whatnot, but, your content was, here are the, three, easy, steps, on how, to pick a house, that's feng shui proof, or, or, in line, to being feng shui, boom, valuable content, let's say, there's like, one million people, I don't wanna be in Houston, let's just say, Houston alone, there's like, a million Asians, who are like, oh man, I gotta share this, because, we're about to buy a house, and my friend, Sandy Chen, wanted to go buy this thing, and she goes like, but, you gotta read this first, it's valuable content, it's content, that you would want to share, and that's the way, it gets out, and this stuff, is shared through, Facebook, social media, Twitter, email, I mean, word of mouth, text, text, text, word of mouth, tons of it, it's gotta be valuable content, if it's spam content, you'll get like, a couple people, and then it just, dies off, this is the stuff, that people go, wow, that is awesome, I gotta share it, an example of this, another example, best, place, to, eat, a, cheeseburger, and then, let's say, it has, every, single, piece, of, cheese, as, every, single, city, in the entire USA, for a blog post, right, but what if this blog post, just goes, this, 2013, or, whatever year, quarter, number, one, the winner is, ba, ba, ba, and then it has another one, 2014, 2015, 2016, like, it has one thing, and then, each, then there's another blog post, of a city, city, city, Austin, Austin, Houston, Houston, um, somewhere in Cali, state of California, state of California, Orlando, Orlando, all of these, are then pointing, as nominations, they're kind of like, I think it was like, an episode, you're like, you're watching like, an episode of, you know, like friends, friends has a whole season, this is a season, but each season, has a bunch of episodes, these are the episodes, that point, and this is so juicy, for search engine optimization, because Google, Google, what happens is, Google will then, drop people in, here, here, maybe something here, depending on how you rank it, or how easy the keyword, was to rank, but as they go in there, Google goes, wait a minute, with this eyes, it's like, kind of like water rings, the eyes of Sauron, it goes, huh, this seems to be, everything here, is leading up to, this authority blog post, is so valuable, people love it, there's like, 5,000 comments, like it's just a, because, you're feeding it, with all these, other blog posts, and that's all, built in, to a blog, super simple, super easy, build it in, bite-sized chunks first, if you want, maybe build it, in cities first, or build it in, whatever category, you can build it, in bite-sized chunks, say the Bible, build each book, of the Bible, and then say, this is the book, of the Bible, that we are focused on today, but here's all the other subjects, and it can be anything, mathematics, math, we can have algebra, calculus, linear algebra, non-linear algebra, all of these different, types of math, that move into, math, you could be, the definitive guide, for math, but it can't come from, just saying, math, you need to have multiple, subcategories, that feed in, feed in, all of it, easily done, on a blog, just by building, content, cool, so, now we get to the point, of, what's a blog, building a better blog, let's wrap it up, you need content, and you need, good content, and you need, frequent content, and you need it, with proper keywords, this is just the start, but it's so easy, even your mom can do it i'm serious how to knit why i like watching housewives how come the houston texans are so awesome content make sure it's good make sure you're proud of it but it doesn't have to be perfect because you can always edit it later you don't need a designer or html expert to do it it's so easy to edit later just get it out there good content continue to build it and you just gotta have proper keywords and like and like i was saying with this one you know use google search and then what happens when you start typing it in it'll start giving you suggestions just make sure those suggestions like whatever it is let's say your your keyword you're zoning on is is how to cook red meat on bbq you maybe that's a suggestion and you know what that has a lot of words might not have a lot of traffic but i want to write an article on this make sure your article has this word in it right it's kind of like it's kind of like if if you're reading a book and the book goes the book the book's name is just purple but the entire book is about like the war in the middle east there's nothing you don't know what the book's about name the book the keyword if you picked up a book and it goes how to cook red meat on a barbecue on bbq don't you think google goes oh man i think this book is about how to cook red meat on a bbq you see what i'm saying and then make sure your article has that word in there too so google it really is about how to cook red meat a barbecue google's hey who's looking for this remember he's like he's like a he's a matchmaker google he google it is a matchmaker google is a matchmaker google is a matchmaker it's like who's looking for this because it knows in suggestions someone's looking for this who's and you know someone found it someone in California is looking at how to cook red meat on a barbecue Google matches it brings you your first free organic visitor to your website because Google knew someone's searching for this exact thing you built it you won you learn proper SEO learn proper training boom your blog is ranking you're ready to go ha this is awesome so this is a good wrap-up content make sure it's good no spammy stuff it's not about volume quality and quality there is a mixture of those obviously just frequent enough does it have to be every day no it doesn't but can it be yes it can do you want to work every day okay go work five times a week do once a day take you less than an hour to do a good blog post right good frequent has a lot to do with what you're looking for and you're looking for some keywords I'm going to show you two super tips that has helped me make over a million dollars all right in using blogging you ready for this these are my aha moments building a better better blog my aha moments okay so as a mechanical engineer working part-time how I was building a better blog I was looking to do that how do I get how do I get more people to actually take action and spend money with me like I was selling some some tools and products how to get them spend money with me and you can understand how to increase it one of the things I did was ask for sale what this means was if I was selling like a tool or let's go back let's say I'm selling a cat water fountain okay so this cat water fountain looks like this it spews water here and this feline comes in here with the long tail looks like a dinosaur and start drinking water because you know they like aerated water cat water fountain I'm selling these and I'm having a hard time getting eyeballs like there's people from Google who are coming to read they're reading my article on cat water fountains right but they're not buying they started to buy after I implemented that ask for the sale right example this cat water fountain let's say I did a review on a cat like a specific cat water fountain this specific kind of water fountain I highly recommend because it's the best price for the best features and it's the healthiest in my opinion you should buy it you should buy it here and then I give them a giant button that says buy here there's just different variations of this but I'm asking to say buy it here and I'm giving them an outlet to go buy it before pre-pre aha it was like thanks I had a really good blog post like a really good informative you know about this cat water fountain it was like this is really good and they go blub blub blub it's really good for your cat thanks my full intention was to sell these I wanted to make money selling these cat water fountains but all I was saying was thanks thanks a lot no I now drive them look this is the best one look I've showed you what I my research this is where you go buy here boom skyrocketing my sales and this I promise to everything I do and doesn't have to be about buying something it could be so true story my daughter in first and in second grade no first in kindergarten when she was in kindergarten and first grade both years she sold the most in fundraising the most in fundraising the most in fundraising because I built what I learned from blogging content rules had a video my daughter was in the video you she said hey we you know we're a fundraiser right now we're selling these things because we're looking to build projectors and all we had was a buy button we did it all online there was no door knocking and going to ain't Sally's house we just basically built the page and then sent them to people we knew that's it and it spread put it on blog and it spread but asking for the sale using the same fundamentals of a blog using the same fundamentals of a blog using the same fundamentals of a blog because blogs can be using videos and asking for the sale two years in a row she sold the most number one in sales using marketing so I think cookies and baskets to raise money for our schools call Paul holiness or like projectors for and you can write on really me 1-2 use in row using the basic principles of a blog using a video having a call to action and our intention was we need to raise money by here versus her going hey my name is Ali blah blah blah our school can use some funds no you asked for the sale boom asking for the sale really worked and in your business it doesn't have to be about money but it's about engaging your audience all right and the second aha is ready for this like maybe don't know what that means maybe you do guru the person who knows it all the number one person the person everyone goes to you don't have to be that person to teach somebody something okay so I get stuck on well I just know a little bit about gardening and I don't want to blog about it if you know a little bit the chances are you probably know 50 percent more than the average person if you just know a little bit if it's something you do passionately anyways it's probably more like 90% more like if you watch you know if you're a comic book lover and you're like you know I'm not really good about coming there's so many more guys at the comic-con fair that know more about comics I'm not no one's gonna read my my reviews on these comics you know 90% more than everyone else in the planet earth because that's your passion just do it that keeps people stuck you don't have to be the specialist you've got people who've got interest do you have interest in it understand that I don't have I'm not the best person on blogging but I enjoy it but I break it down to helping you and if I got stuck like you like well there's two guys in California who are better than myself in blogging I'm just not gonna do it no that's doing you a disservice no that's doing you a disservice I want to show you how I retired by blogging right not being focused on being perfect you don't have to be perfect no one's perfect understand that be okay with that you do not have to be a guru you do not have to be the specialist you just gotta be someone who has an interest who has the desire to move forward and with that desire you'll probably on average know that you're not só JOHN that's what people thatlene yeah right so like Whoo at least city our people at least 50% more than your audience and if it's something you do on a regular basis or if this is something you've known for a while you don't know even more than 90 percent you know more than 90% of the people who come to your website using your blog you can educate them help them teach them about the Bible teaching them about how to spam you do your kids or teach me how to change oil on your car right?
car before. Teach me. I'm the 90% of that percentage that you can show. Cool.
I did not change the oil in my Porsche. How do you do that? Oh, wait a minute. The oil is in the back.
I didn't know the oil was in the back. That's crazy. I would not have known that. I learned it because you go and find people who are unafraid to express their expertise, express their knowledge without being the guru.
You don't have to be perfect. You just got to take massive action, building what you want to build using the technology of a blog. It gets easier and easier. Your time is now.
The blogging platforms have streamlined and gotten so much better since 2009 since I've started. You can do it. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Trust me.

The primary traffic most people get in a blog... Now, there's multiple other ways to get traffic to your blog, but the easiest and the best way is to consider SEO, search engine optimization.
Now, this is gonna be a very easy way to digest this. We'll be going at a pace that you could take notes and understand why these are important, why these interact with each other. The blog interacts with search engines because search engines, you know, when you go on Google or Yahoo or MSN or you know, I guess Bing, and you type in what is a good place to eat, and then it gives you a bunch of different results, those results are being found by search engines. But search engines, they love blogs. Why? Because it's always feeding the search engine more food. It's like a dog, or better yet a stray animal, who comes to your house and you continue to give them food, they're gonna keep coming back and they love it. That's why this blog works so well, because when you give it a web log, it's an actual ongoing daily journal, or whatever your frequency is, whenever you give it content, the search engine is like, hey, you got more food for me.
So, why would you want to use a blog? Many different ways why you use a blog. I guess the first way is to get your message out. You have a message. Some message are so you can make money, say you're in real estate, say you own a pet grooming business, say you own a landscaping business, your message is you have a service or product that someone would like to have or need and you want that message delivered to them. This is a perfect way to do it. Perfect way, because blogging is such an easy way to get your message across. It doesn't have to be about selling something. The message could be multiple things. It could be about causes. Like what do you mean by causes? Churches. Every single church should be using some type of blog to push the causes, like building water wells, mission trips.
See, when you have a static website, a website that doesn't move, it's like a very traditional static website, you go there and you get a message, and then you get a message, and go there, and all it is is one page, one picture about you, the mission statement, contact, and maybe some FAQ. There's not much meat. It's like if you're hungry and they're giving you like a little piece to taste, you know, like I want more. So those are drawn to wanting you to contact them but not really information rich, and search engines don't really like them so much. Why? Because it's like the same food. It's like if the animal comes back to you and you're giving them the same dirty bone, they're like, why are we gonna come back tomorrow?
Blogs, on the other hand, see, when you have sermons every week, you have a new message. New messages should then be like a web blog put onto the blog. Updated blogs are a very specific way that every single type of person, be it causes, but the message is still the same, getting your word out. If you're trying to sell a house, maybe you're trying to sell a car, you know, maybe you do eyelashes as a business and you're like, we have a running sale only for this week, great way to showcase that. So the way you want to use that is you want to use it also for branding. Here's the deal. You just started a business, you're a sandwich shop down the road, how do you differentiate yourself from all the big chains, or how do you differentiate yourself from the next sandwich shop six blocks away?
The blog is a perfect way for you to get that message out and not having to worry about, well, how do I make money? How do I maintain that?
A blog is so inexpensive to maintain. There's many different ways to do it. We'll show you some different ways we do it. The thing with the blog is there's a lot of things behind the scene, but a lot of it's prepackaged. So it's way easier than using a static site.
Okay. So online exposure, you want to do personal branding. And I always love soapbox, you know, soapbox or a bar of soap, soapbox. If you just got something on your shoulder, if you just got something on your heart, let's say you're fighting for same sex equality. Let's say you're fighting for minorities who get into the workplace.
Let's say you're going for, you want to help kids get their driver's license before 18. What if you're trying to lower the drinking age? If you can fight in a war, why can't you drink? If that's your message, soapbox it. Soapbox is a perfect way to get your message out.
On a blog, because you can continue to have more content and more data and more reasons why someone should listen to you, because you're building your brand at the same time. On your soapbox, it can be anything, why you should spay and neuter your animals, your cats and your dogs. If you just, like you work at a pound, you're like, man, we really need to fix this. There's too many animals. We need to get the message out.
The message, you can get the message out on our blog. How? If you own an animal clinic or a veterinarian, you really want to get the message of spay and neutering, have a bunch of pictures of animals who keep coming in, it's like, look, we can reduce this type of travesty of having so many uncontrolled dogs and cats in our area just by spay and neutering, and then you can push them to a service that you host or that you recommend to solve that problem. See, it's gathering a tribe of people, a collection of people who see what you see, who understand that. It's like me trying to, at my job, no joke, when I was working, I had a push and I was going to push this message onto a blog. Why don't employees who wash their hands use soap? Do they think it's clean? That's the type of material I put on my blog. Why? To me, a father with three kids, I want people to wash their hands with soap, not just with water. Makes no sense, but common sense doesn't matter. You're trying to push a message that you believe in your heart needs to be spoken with, and it's not to please everybody, it's not to get everybody into that, it's to build a brand, build trust, get the message out, and have some causes.
Okay, so why else use a blog? An awesome way to interact with all the other social properties. So here we go, these are the main ways I've been able to just really push your brand, your why, maybe you're trying to sell some houses, maybe you're trying to build a business, maybe you're trying to get more funding for your PTA, Parent Teachers Association, trying to raise some school funds. These are the primary ways of that information, using an article, like a document or a word document or an essay, 500 words, 50,000 words, a book, an e-book, it's written. And then there's video, like when someone shoots a video and they have a message, hey, you need to go pick up your dog crap because that's not allowed in this neighborhood, and you post that out in your community and your subdivision is like, oh yeah, we need to have strict enforcement, if your dog walks on a leash it needs to be on a leash, you need to pick up the dog poop, right, that's the video. And the images, they're like a thousand words, you've heard this, they're worth a million words, you just have images and people were like, oh, I get it. You can interact with all three types of these vehicles to communicate with another human being on a blog. The blog interfaces with one or all three at the same time. This is an easy way. There's no need for crazy coding. If you were to look at this, a blog is just a standard website, but it can include a video, have written words, and have pictures, it can have a video, it can have words, it can have a picture, you can have one of or both of all three, it doesn't matter, that's the flexibility of a blog, it interfaces with all of that. So if you're really good, if you're a really good writer, you primarily be doing a lot of writing. If you're really good at artistic views and you're really good at taking good shots, if you're a good photographer and you're really good at, you know, what does that picture say to you, images. But if you're just dead funny on the video and you like to speak more versus writing more, you can use a video to do that. That's the power of a blog, because you can get it out there so much faster, easy to implement. The blogs are built to accept these types of communication, and that's why you gotta be using it.
Okay, other thing, social integration. Social, what is it? Not your neighbor, your neighbor kind of counts, okay, but here we talk about... Did I miss one? Yeah, there's a lot of them. Okay, so these are the big ones I've pinpointed because these are the ones I primarily use. So social networks, which have billions of people, the second largest website in the entire world, that has more people than every country out there, is Facebook. Everyone and their mom, which is funny because there's probably a lot more moms and dads on Facebook, but there's so many people on Facebook, you gotta be using Facebook. And you know what, all of this blends perfectly with the blog. So if you're really good at Facebook, like, whoosh, it's time for me to book. Yeah, I'm really good at Twitter, should I be tweeting and also building a blog? Yes, you should be building the blog. They all speak to each other, they all like each other, it's kind of like peas and carrots, they're both vegetables, they just go together. Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, all these, Instagram, I missed Instagram on there, let's go, right, Instagram, because I use that too. There's a lot of different ways, pictures, social networks, words and pictures, social Facebook, social updates, Facebook social days with pictures and video, all of this, oh, I almost forgot, YouTube. So many different ways to interact with your blog. You have the three main ways and these three main ways are then altered on different social methods that then all interact with the blog. This is critical if you want to build a strong cause, if you want to get on a strong soapbox, if you want to help more people see your vision, why people should cut the lawns and not bag it, because the more you bag your grass clippings, the more landfill trash we have, that's a good cause, right, or not watering your lawn every single day, that's a good cause. And these are the things you can get on a blog because no one can tell you what you can and cannot say, unless you don't own the blog. This is why it's important to be able to pay for a service that allows you to support your business and to be able to speak your mind, right, well, outside of the crazy stuff. But some blogs, if they're free, it's not really free, there's restricted speech on there, and there's a lot of stuff, like they don't want you to sell anything on there. Well, I don't want to go into that, that's craziness. You want to use a blog that allows you to express yourself with all these different types, there's many different types of blogs, but I'm going into the general set of what a blog can do. Social interactions, being able to get the content out that you like to get the content out, article, video, images, using social media like Facebook, Google Plus, Pinterest, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube.
Good. So who are the type of people who can use a blog? Let's really dig down, let's see if it's really talking to you, if this is really you and do you really need a blog. Let's check this out. I've spoken, right, first person I like to always think about is the person who is running a nonprofit, right, like a church. So an example would be a nonprofit for a church. You have a sermon every, say, Sunday, maybe you do another sermon Saturday, a different language, a blog is a fantastic way to have your message to your congregation every single week and then you can have that sent to them passively. All you have to do is go visit our blog, go visit every week, just go visit our blog, not to give the entire website link, because they'll know where it is once they see it, and you know what, they'll get updates from it, they'll see, oh, this was posted last week, oh, I missed two weeks ago because I was on vacation, oh, I was sick that day and I couldn't attend, this is a perfect way to get your message to your people, your congregation.
So another one would be, and this is what I focused on when I was part-time as an engineer, I wanted to focus on selling so I can get out of engineering, which I did at the age of 33, 12 years of engineering, got out of it, and got my wife out of accounting through selling. Things like, what can you really sell on a blog? Remember, there's three types of ways you can actually get information out there, right? You have article marketing, you have video marketing, and image marketing. So what are the stuff, in different ways you can start selling stuff? Well, I mean, there's tons of stuff, like Etsy, there's like Amazon, there's like eBay, there's info products, there's your own products, there's affiliate products, let's go on and on and on. So you sell things, real estate, selling homes, warranty sales, like if you sell life insurance. Why don't I go into life insurance? See, life insurance, it's cracking me up, we always have a bad stigma, oh man, that person's coming to me because they're trying to preach to me, the whole doom and gloom, if you die you do XYZ, if you die your kids don't get married. See, the thing with the insurance agent, there's many different ways you can educate your audience with the blog on the benefits or showing case studies without actually forcing someone to go, hey John, if you die you owe this my money, blah. A blog can show the benefits of having life insurance and what it can do for you. Mary just had her husband pass away, she didn't have to pay for the funeral, the life insurance kicked in, now she's able to still have money go to college, because, see, it's the feel-good, people love feel-good, right, it's like a movie, you go in and like, oh man, John died, but then Peggy came in and had the life insurance set up. That's how you sell it on a blog, but it needs to be constantly updating on different case studies, customers you run into, testimonials, happy clients. Think about it, if you had a static website, it is so much harder to update, if you have 50 clients that came in and asked you, hey, this is a fantastic service, more people need to know about what you do, what you provide, a website will be just kind of hard to update. A blog, the fantastic way, hey, Lester from Wisconsin sent this video in showing why it's so important to have insurance coverage on your home, your automobile, and your life, and then you just have that testimonial on the blog. Fantastic way to get the information out there. It is a fantastic service. Homes, do you sell just one home? Is it just the one home you're trying to sell and that's it for the entire career?
No, you sell multiple homes. You need to suit volume. Maybe you're a rental. There's so many ways. You showcase your properties on the blog.
So you have a business card. Someone goes, hey, I'm new in the area. What are some hot places I can live in this area?
Let's say you own an oil change facility down the street.
Accountants, lawyers, right? Like what if you own, like we were talking about a sandwich shop, food. I like to say food trucks. Food trucks with a blog integrated with social media.
That is the awesomeness. That is the magic. That is the awesomeness way to get viral exposure. Integrating social media, a blog. Why?
You want one way to collect all the social media into one spot so you have like pictures from Instagram. You have embedded posts from Facebook. You have a tweet back that goes back to your blog. It all comes back to your blog which then you have the most control over. The social media is like Facebook, Google.
You don't have control over that. That's just a platform. This is fully customizable. Remember, articles, videos, pictures, all so you can get your message to your core audience.
Because blogs have a commenting box built in because they want you, or the website of the blog is built in naturally to communicate.
The blog is built so it's an easy two-way communication street between you and the potential reader. And this person can be coming from somewhere on Google who just searched chocolate chip cookies or maybe you had just told someone, you had a business card, well, I do recipes on my blog, and you gave it to them and you just posted a chocolate chip cookie recipe one time and they read it and they're like, that's where you come in.
But search engines, basically, these are the search engines that are like, you go to Bing or let's just go Google.com.
In a blog, let's just, for visual representation, say we're fishing and we're looking for someone who is, we're a chef and we just want to spread the goodwill of making really good brownies. We have one, two, three, four, five, six brownie recipes. But over here, you only have one because that's just the one.
It's just one big one. Having to update this, calling your designer, hey, can you update this real quick, blah, blah, blah. You will get this amount of work way done faster, easier, cheaper, done by yourself versus hiring somebody to do something static.
There's no waiting time on getting a designer.
Google then has a better opportunity to see this, this, this, this, and this.
Someone's like, I'm just looking for hardwood floors in Southwest Houston. Boom.
I'm only looking for bonus rooms because I know most bonus rooms don't come because the new homes don't have bonus rooms in this area, but they're only built in like 1980 to 1985. They're looking for a bonus room. This room has a bonus room. Boom. You got a bonus.
See, you can have a breakdown specifically just to sell one thing, but because you're building content underneath one, all it is a matter of putting the content on there, putting the content on there. All built into a blog, super easy, and then have them all connect to the main piece of content where you're trying to sell the house. Okay? Does this make sense? This is what we call ranking an internal page versus just the one big page.
If you take this a step further, let's say a website called, your website is happy.com. That's your website. Also, it's over here. This one only has one major website.
We call it the top level domain. It's the top.
You can build a whole subset of blog posts on family, a whole subset on social media, a whole subset of just pictures.
I said subset, based off of the main domain of happy.com. Not to say if you own happy.com, it's just an example.
All these pieces all flow up back to the main domain structure, strengthening it.
In a nutshell, what this works is, as you continue to build your blog, you're building your entire website. Here, it's like, when you build it, you're done. I'm done. Time to go home.
No. You build it, and you continue to build it to get more and more and more traffic.
A custom HTML website is super slow, you've got to outsource it, you better be a good coder, you have to understand uploading, downloading, hosting, it's a ridiculous amount of work. Super fast, in my heyday, I had almost 50 blogs, all on different niches, like selling cat water fountains.
You have a blog on cats, a blog on dogs, and a blog on birds. Now you go, I have a blog on pet supplies. Let's say you're like a pet dealer.
Way harder to do that with a standard website. Why? Because the speed, there's no speed. It's slow. How would you start doing it?
You can't. To be able to focus that, an example for a real estate agent, you have different neighborhoods. You have neighborhood one, neighborhood two, neighborhood three, all going to, here's what I did.
Definitely okay to have multiple blogs and they can interact with each other.
It also has, for fundraisers, donations. Since I do donate my time to PTA, I kind of know what this stuff does. So a community blog, right, it's not a single person, it's a community that goes to a blog, that blog then has information about donations, the different donations we're looking for. We need Kleenex for third grade fundraisers. We are running low on funds to repair the fence on the school ground, and we're looking for, oh, true story, fundraiser, we're looking to build a canopy over the kids playground unit, right, and then the quotes were like 10k to thirty thousand dollars, but we needed to fundraise for it. The best way is if you have a community of people who are in the school system, you just send them to the blog, and here's the big fundraiser, we're looking to fund it. People, if they see the vision, if they see the goal, the reasons behind it, the cause, they will donate the money to get that because their kids don't get sunburned, versus just saying, hey, we're fundraising, give us some money. No, you have to be very specific, and you can show them exactly what you're going to buy, because it changes every year, exactly what you're going to buy, how much it costs, who you're quoting for. That's a great way of donations, help, volunteer. We need help and volunteers, like room moms. Hey, fourth grade, we especially need someone to help on the track date that they have, when can you sign up? Oh, like my wife, she signed up for first grade reading, she signed up for a date to read to the class. All of this can be put on a blog, easily found, updated on the fly per semester, per year, per need. This is just an example, you don't have to just use it on school systems, it can be communities, it can be outreach, it can be anything you want.
It can just be like a spay and neuter, spay and neuter your animals community. It can be anything.
This is important because if you really have a larger vision, don't let, I have to have some fancy website where I spend thousands of dollars getting it designed and uploaded and custom. No, you don't need any of this. Just get a blog. The last one we want to go over is speed.
Let's talk about speed. A lot of you who are thinking, okay, I get it, a website is a blog, a blog is a website, a blog is super easy to maintain, only one person is needed to run it, I mean, Lawrence ran multiples, right, super easy. But speed doesn't matter unless you actually do it, you gotta do something. So speed of zero is still zero, so make sure you're doing something, and the way to get better at building your blog is just to do it, that's all it is. See, a standard website is really hard to correct and adjust. It's kind of like we have a rocket, so you're a rocket, right, and it's firing from earth. There's not one straight shot that goes through to the moon, you understand that, right? It takes multiple adjustments. The faster you make your adjustments, the smoother it looks, and it's like, oh, it took one shot, not really, thousands of adjustments to get to the moon. It's never a straight shot. Same thing for building your website. This blog is way easier to get to your destination because you're doing it, right? I did it and I'm like, hmm, now what do you do, how do you fix it, it's harder to get the feedback and adjustments where a blog, just by doing, I mean, really writing articles, posting some images, really posting content, the more content you push out there, the faster you understand, like, wow, people aren't really attached to this, people really love that sermon, people really love the way that we did XYZ, that's being able to quickly adjust your track, where a standard website would just go straight into the abyss. Where a rocket, like a blog, it's constantly being readjusted just by doing, because in the process of building more content, making your website look bigger, making Google go, wow, you're an authority, you must be really important because you have so many of these pages pointing to your main domain, it happens just by doing it. Websites inherently aren't built like that, they're not built to build more content to make bigger, it's too hard to do it.
Emulation. You don't have to be stuck going, I have to be perfect. No, you don't.
Everyone understands you. It's not about being perfect. It's about doing, getting your message out. People accept it. Go ahead and emulate it.
Right? Next thing is, you actually get a faster following. A lot of this comes built in to a blog because if you're, let's say, you have one piece of content here and here you have a hundred pieces of content. But what does that really mean?
Like this gargantuan website is just one big blog customized website, where this one's got a hundred different posts from a hundred different days, different videos and images. Your following will follow you faster because you have all this content, and they can come in at any point and go back in the past or stay current. Your followers are growing faster inherently because it's chronological. It's built to build audiences, a blog, a website.
Not so much. It's usually like, let me just build a building and I'm done. It's done, not worth it. Our blog is built...
...is built to have a ton of content, the more content you put on there, the faster the following comes on. And of course, speed comes from content. The blog is so much easier to get the content out there. It's so much easier.
All right, let's go on to, I like the word easy.
You like the word easy? What makes a blog so easy? Well, for one, it loves fresh meat. It's like going to a bakery and you come over here and they have the same slice of bread two months ago and you're like, no thank you. Over here, we bake fresh every morning at 4 a.m.
Straight to you because regular posts, we call them content, it's constantly being updated.
Implements it quickly because most of us already know how to use a word processing software like Word or OpenOffice. You just type in, oh, I'm gonna change this for a Word doc. Everyone who went through school in the last 20 years knows how to use a word processing piece of software.
Boom, built right in. This one's gotta be customized. Super easy. So, another piece to this is a blog is built out of the box to be very fast, simplistic, right? It's built to get you results.
See, it's a lot of times people build these websites and they're so convoluted, there's so much stuff. They're like, there's 50 million buttons here. I'm, as the viewer, I'm coming here, I'm looking at this, I'm stuck. Most traditional blogs, it's super basic, can be customized, but normally if you do it the right way and the way we teach you, super easy. Generally, you have a header and then a sidebar and then you have your content here.
Super fast, built in, you don't have to like, how do I program that sidebar? All this is built in, easy, you can get this source so quickly or just have it built in, done through the blog itself. Very simple so you can get up and running. We're a standard blog.
You're like, well, I want this special thing here. It gets out of hand. Do you want it to be super crazy complex and hard to maintain or super easy to maintain, clean lines? And the main thing you're trying to do is win people over, maybe make some money, influence, soapbox, whatever it is. What's your opinion?
And the best way to get this model to work, the best way, because this works.
My name is Lawrence Tam. My approval goes to a standard blog. Anyone can use it, even part-time. Hey, Lawrence Tam here again.
A niche is a very specific topic. Christians, dogs. German shepherds.
High-end cars. Porsches. Houses. Houses over a million dollars in Sugar Land. The niche is you want to take a subject and you want to get very specific.
Now, I talked about this. If you market to everybody, you market to nobody. If you want to market to cars, good luck. Because there's a bajillion dealerships and auto manufacturers and car parts and tuners. And movies.
There's just so many things that deal with cars. But what if you just want to sell a very specific item? What if you sell a turbo kit for a Porsche, right? That's all you sell.
Well, from cars to a turbo kit, like you're a turbo kit manufacturer, that's a way better way to do it. Well, how about health?
But it's much easier for you to go into a market and be very, very specific, how to eat vegan, how to cook chicken the best way using only natural herbs and spices. How do you barbecue with just using oranges and not using lemons?
And it can be whatever weird thing that you do, but I guarantee it, if you do it, someone else probably does it too. What if you were a group of dog lovers who love tickling their dogs under their chests while they sing to them? If you do this, there's a good chance someone else does that.
You can go from animals to tickling your dog as you sing to them. And remember, it doesn't have to be about making money. It's your soapbox, about you giving your passion out there. And that leads me to make sure you do it about passion. Right?
Because if it's not passion, it better be about money. This is what I learned since doing business since 2009. There's a dividing line. Sometimes, if you're lucky enough, you can do both. But most times, people go after money and there's no passion into it.
Or they go into passion and there's no money into it. And it's hard. It's really hard to, if you're really passionate about gift wrap, like you just love wrapping presents. But there's really no money.
Let's just say, I don't know if that industry does or does not, it's just as an example, I wouldn't think so.
You love the gospel of Luke and you want more people to read about the gospel of Luke. Definitely can do that. Or if you just love the fact that, you know, your Ford Mustang is so awesome, you just have a huge passion of having people understand the beauty of driving a Ford Mustang.
The blog, the better blog, will help you with not having a static website but a dynamic one, building that content up. Okay?
So, with these niches, we got to find a keyword. Now, what is a keyword? A keyword is the exact specific saying someone is looking for right now on Google, or in the past, or possibly in the future. That's a keyword. Okay?
Let's go with that. So, to have a niche, we want to be able to give you a keyword. Now, what is a keyword? If your niche was food trucks, taco food trucks, okay?
But your keyword was best fish tacos in Houston, Texas, south of the border. How is it south of the border? South of the Woodlands. All right? So, maybe your keyword is like fish taco truck Houston.
Very specific. Location, type, type of restaurant. Not kind of just taco, fish taco. But what if this is your, like you just love making fish tacos and that's your specialty and you just know your clients love it. Why don't that be your keyword?
It's very specific. It's very regionalized. This niche will play in if you're in the restaurant business and selling food. You got to have the keyword. The keyword expands because remember, Google can't read your mind.
I call it the brain. All right? You can actually get into the head of the person searching for this and you can pre-frame them to buy from you. All from a blog.
All from a blog because you used a keyword. Example is best. When you type in best, this person is looking for the best chalupa in Sugar Land. Not just a chalupa. The best chalupa.
And if you had a blog post, and you had an article that had some videos of you making it and some pictures and some testimonials and some happy customers, and you just show you are the best chalupa in Sugar Land, this person goes, I was looking for the best chalupa. Now I get to eat the best chalupa in Sugar Land. You see what I'm saying? You make money in business by solving people's problems. This person's specific problem was, they typed in best chalupa in Sugar Land, and you knew, you targeted that keyword, and you had an article, because blogs are built to have multiple pieces of content, not just one like a static website, but a big blog with a lot of content.
Because your website has so many pieces of content about best chalupa in Woodlands, best chalupa in Dallas, best chalupa in Texas, and then Google's like, I get it, your website's about the best chalupa, and it starts to send you best chalupa. Best chalupa has way more traffic than best chalupa in Sugar Land, because this is very specific to a region.
This is just, in the entire universe, who has the best chalupa? Now you get it. But what if Google goes, man, you've got so much good content that talks about the best chalupa, I'm gonna make sure you're found when people just type in chalupa. So if we had to go into keywords, how those work, in a broad sense, there is some circumstances where it might change, but in a broad sense, this is an easy way, okay? As the keyword gets longer, the traffic goes down with it.
What does that mean? So if your keyword here was chalupa, right? There's more traffic on top, because it's a single word, billions of websites have chalupa, best chalupa, chalupa ingredients, chalupa recipes, chalupa south side, hot chalupa, crunchy chalupa. There's a lot of words, a lot of sentences that have chalupa, so a lot of websites will have the word chalupa. But if you go down to best chalupa in Mexico, you get a longer keyword, that actual keyword is longer, so someone has to type this entire piece out, it's longer, you're gonna get less traffic, but there's a really cool relationship with this. The cool relationship is you get closer to the buyers. Now the buyer doesn't have to be someone who pays you money, the buyer could be someone in your congregation at church, they're buying into your sermon, it doesn't have to be about money, it could be about a cause, they're buying into spaying and neutering, they're buying into changing your oil every three months, they're buying into donating your shoes to Goodwill, it's buying into helping your community, it's buying into tithing at 10%, you buy in with money and thoughts and ideas. The closer you go into a long, we call this a long tail, that is gonna help you, so you're not gonna feel like, man, there's a billion websites that have the word chalupa, how am I gonna be one of the blog posts that can be found among billions? Get specific, it's the niche. As you continue to build this up, maybe that word is in thousands of your web posts, and your niche starts to get bigger and bigger and you start to level up until eventually, you hit the word chalupa, if that's your goal, you wanna be the chalupa king, you can do it, you can be the chalupa king, but start with the niche because we want you to be found, it's super easy, using it with the blog, it's built in, Google wants more content. What are the chances a static website will have a website that specifies its focus on best chalupa in Mexico? Probably zero to none, but a blog post, it's built in to have multiple entries, boom, you can write it in 10 minutes, add a couple pictures, add your recipe, add some testimonials, you're done, boom, Google's like, no one gives, Google is the entity who's trying to get their viewers, people who are typing, what they want, they wanna give them a good user experience, and Google's like, no one is giving me content, so instead of giving them the best content, Google's like, here's my best guess, I think that's it, but as you get more specific, Google's like, you actually got the exact keyword, this guy from Georgia, he typed that in, I'm gonna connect you two, you guys are a perfect match, so here's your guy, and here's your website. What this is, Google's a matchmaker, that's all it is, Google just wants to get the person, once they type it and hit enter, Google in a split second has to figure out who is the best person, best website, to give to this person, who can solve this person's problem, if he's searching for best chalupa in South Africa, and there's no one who provides that exact match, but when you do, they're like, ding, ding, ding, Google's like, ha, I knew someone was gonna type that out, and then they match it. Google is a matchmaker, like a dating service, you know, so when Google does that, Google as a service wins confidence from the user, even though they use it for free, but they have a different service, different monetization angle, that user's like, Google's awesome, I was looking for this, and I found it, the exact one, specifically what I was looking for, I'm gonna keep using Google. Now for you, you wanna be on Google's good graces, on search engine optimization, one way to optimize, get a keyword people are searching for, you can win, even though traffic goes down in a long tail keyword, this is winnable. Why? As the long tail goes down, as traffic follows it, not as much traffic, and more buyers, but it gets easier and easier to rank. Why?
There's less competition, less traffic, but it's easier to rank, you keep ranking the small, low hanging fruit. Alright, here we go, these are topics, how can you find some quick, super ninja keywords? Alright, let's go, so you can start, and then right after this video, you can start with a keyword. Alright, I'm gonna show you right now, super simple, don't need a computer to show you how this works. Now I do it, so you type in Google, and then it has a search bar, and then it has another button that says like, maybe search, or depending on what they name it. Type something in there, don't type it out letter by letter like my dad does, he'll type in, say it's like, how to get to the Woodlands, he'll look down at the keyboard and type each letter, even though Google has something called autosuggest. What it means is, if you just type in like one word, Google is gonna start thinking, oh, he must think how to make pancakes, and so it was like, how to make pancakes, but as you type more words in here, it's gonna start suggesting different things on what you type. Those are your starting point for keywords. I wouldn't just use a keyword that has one word, that's hard, think about it, cars, red cars, black cars, Mustang cars, Ford cars, Japanese cars, old cars, damaged cars, cars that are wrecked, there's so many words that use cars. But what if your word had more words, how to buy used cars online, it has more words, it's a little more specific, you're gonna have an easier time ranking this. Rank, when I say rank, it means allowing Google to have you found easier, because remember, when you do a search in Google, it'll give you its search results, but it's ordered, one, two, three, you don't see the one or two, but it's really just like first website, second website, third website, fourth website, fifth website, it goes down in preference. When I say rank, the higher you go up in the search results, the more, like I believe, in one study I saw, it was like more than 45% click that first link. So, if you have 10,000 people searching for a word every single day, and that first spot gets 45%, you wanna be the first spot. Well, to rank higher, you have to give Google what it believes its users want, and the first thing it wants is very specified keywords that the user's actually looking for. And one way to do it, go to Google, just start typing, and the autosuggest in Google will give you ideas, copy them down, and build your blog on that. If you're selling houses, if you're selling purses, if you're raising funds for the school, these are the keywords, because why? Google suggests it because it has had other people type it in and hit search, it knows. Don't go against the grain, go with the flow, Google is telling you exactly what people are searching for right now, use its suggestion.
Cool, next thing, how to build a better blog. I like to teach this: end in mind. Know what you want from your blog. Are you trying to raise funds, are you trying to alert people of the cause, are you drinking poor water in your city, are you trying to help people not water the lawns in the morning, what is your end in mind, what is your goal, what do you want your website to do? I mean, is it to make money, is it to influence, is it to win the popular vote, is it to become famous? What do you want, have the end goal in mind. So, when you're building your blog, your blog will all gravitate towards your end in mind. When people get this all mixed up, they're like, you know, I just want to save the world, but then they keep trying to make money on it, there's a conflict, right, or someone's like, you know, I don't want to make money, but the real passion was, you know, to stay home, but didn't even know how much money they needed per month. Gotta be very specific, if you need $10,000 a month, every single month, to stay home, what's your end goal? Your blog will focus and build what it needs to build to get there. Have the end in mind. If you do that, get specific, using the blog as a tool to convey your message, it's a much easier way to build influence, maybe even make some money. Cool, if you don't have this, you're gonna be entering wanderlessly, and go, well, I kind of ended up in square zero, because you don't have a real defined route. Now, it might need corrections, just like a rocket to go into the moon, but you kind of know where you wanna go with that. Do you wanna help people, do you really wanna just show people how to cut hair at home, whatever it is, influencing, how-to's, all very important.
Okay, one way to also build a better blog is called valuable content. Valuable content, and so many people get confused, very simple, valuable content is something you read and go, I wanna bookmark that, or I wanna share it on Facebook, or my friend Susie needs to read this, this is important stuff, because you want valuable content, not spam. See, this stuff is short-lived, people might see it for today, but it's not gonna live. Valuable content is shared. What is valuable content? If you're a mortgage, let's say you're a real estate agent, and valuable content is how to pick the perfect house for feng shui rules, so let's say it's a, how to feng shui, how to pick a feng shui house. So, I've been going through this right now, my dad's like, you gotta hire a specialist, I don't even believe this stuff, but the thing is, the house I'm probably gonna sell to in the future is probably someone who might be interested in feng shui, it's very important. So, let's say you're a real estate agent, and you know Houston's got a huge Asian population, and the chances of someone buying your house will probably be Asian, is like, I don't think it's important to have your house feng shui for resale values, or if it's an investment property, or whatnot, but your content was, here are the three easy steps on how to pick a house that's feng shui proof, or in line to being feng shui, boom, valuable content. Let's say there's like a million Asians in Houston alone who are like, oh man, I gotta share this, because we're about to buy a house, and my friend Sandy Chen wanted to go buy this thing, and she goes like, but you gotta read this first, it's valuable content, it's content that you would want to share, and that's the way it gets out, and this stuff is shared through Facebook, social media, Twitter, email, word of mouth, text, tons of it. It's gotta be valuable content, if it's spam content, you'll get like a couple people, and then it just dies off. This is the stuff that people go, wow, that is awesome, I gotta share it. An example of this, another example, best place to eat a cheeseburger, and then let's say it has every single piece of cheese, every single city in the entire USA, for a blog post, right, but what if this blog post just goes, this 2013, or whatever year, quarter number one, the winner is, and then it has another one, 2014, 2015, 2016, like it has one thing, and then each, then there's another blog post of a city, Austin, Houston, somewhere in California, Orlando, all of these are then pointing as nominations, they're kind of like, I think it was like an episode, you're like, you're watching like an episode of, you know, like Friends, Friends has a whole season, this is a season, but each season has a bunch of episodes, these are the episodes that point, and this is so juicy for search engine optimization, because Google will then drop people in here, here, maybe something here, depending on how you rank it, or how easy the keyword was to rank, but as they go in there, Google goes, wait a minute, it's like water rings, the eyes of Sauron, it goes, huh, this seems to be, everything here is leading up to this authority blog post, is so valuable, people love it, there's like 5,000 comments, because you're feeding it with all these other blog posts, and that's all built in to a blog, super simple, super easy, build it in, bite-sized chunks first, if you want, maybe build it in cities first, or build it in whatever category, you can build it in bite-sized chunks, say the Bible, build each book of the Bible, and then say, this is the book of the Bible that we are focused on today, but here's all the other subjects, and it can be anything, mathematics, we can have algebra, calculus, linear algebra, non-linear algebra, all of these different types of math that move into math, you could be the definitive guide for math, but it can't come from just saying math, you need to have multiple subcategories that feed in, easily done, on a blog, just by building content.
Cool, so now we get to the point of, what's a blog, building a better blog, let's wrap it up. You need content, and you need good content, and you need frequent content, and you need it with proper keywords, this is just the start, but it's so easy, even your mom can do it, I'm serious. How to knit, why I like watching housewives, how come the Houston Texans are so awesome, content, make sure it's good, make sure you're proud of it, but it doesn't have to be perfect because you can always edit it later, you don't need a designer or HTML expert to do it, it's so easy to edit later, just get it out there. Good content, continue to build it, and you just gotta have proper keywords, and like I was saying with this one, use Google search and then what happens when you start typing it in, it'll start giving you suggestions, just make sure those suggestions, whatever it is, let's say your keyword you're zoning on is how to cook red meat on BBQ, maybe that's a suggestion, and you know what, that has a lot of words, might not have a lot of traffic, but I want to write an article on this, make sure your article has this word in it, right? It's kind of like, if you're reading a book and the book's name is just "Purple," but the entire book is about the war in the Middle East, there's nothing, you don't know what the book's about. Name the book the keyword. If you picked up a book and it goes "How to Cook Red Meat on a BBQ," don't you think Google goes, oh man, I think this book is about how to cook red meat on a BBQ, you see what I'm saying, and then make sure your article has that word in there too, so Google, it really is about how to cook red meat on a barbecue, Google's like, hey, who's looking for this. Remember, he's like a matchmaker, Google is a matchmaker, it's like, who's looking for this, because it knows in suggestions someone's looking for this, and you know, someone found it, someone in California is looking at how to cook red meat on a barbecue, Google matches it, brings you your first free organic visitor to your website because Google knew someone's searching for this exact thing, you built it, you won, you learned proper SEO, learned proper training, boom, your blog is ranking, you're ready to go, ha, this is awesome. So this is a good wrap-up, content, make sure it's good, no spammy stuff, it's not about volume, it's quality, and there is a mixture of those, obviously just frequent enough. Does it have to be every day? No, it doesn't, but can it be? Yes, it can. Do you want to work every day? Okay, go work five times a week, do once a day, take you less than an hour to do a good blog post, right? Good frequent has a lot to do with what you're looking for and you're looking for some keywords.
I'm going to show you two super tips that have helped me make over a million dollars, all right, in using blogging, you ready for this? These are my aha moments building a better blog, my aha moments. Okay, so as a mechanical engineer working part-time, how I was building a better blog, I was looking to do that, how do I get more people to actually take action and spend money with me, like I was selling some tools and products, how to get them to spend money with me, and you can understand how to increase it. One of the things I did was ask for the sale. What this means was, if I was selling like a tool, let's go back, let's say I'm selling a cat water fountain, okay, so this cat water fountain looks like this, it spews water here, and this feline comes in here with the long tail, looks like a dinosaur, and starts drinking water because you know they like aerated water. Cat water fountain, I'm selling these and I'm having a hard time getting eyeballs, like there's people from Google who are coming to read, they're reading my article on cat water fountains, right, but they're not buying. They started to buy after I implemented that ask for the sale, right? Example, this cat water fountain, let's say I did a review on a specific cat water fountain, this specific kind of water fountain, I highly recommend it because it's the best price for the best features, and it's the healthiest in my opinion, you should buy it, you should buy it here, and then I give them a giant button that says buy here. There's just different variations of this, but I'm asking to say, buy it here, and I'm giving them an outlet to go buy it. Before, pre-aha, it was like, thanks, I had a really good blog post, like a really good informative, you know, about this cat water fountain, it was like this is really good, and they go, this is really good for your cat, thanks. My full intention was to sell these, I wanted to make money selling these cat water fountains, but all I was saying was thanks a lot. No, now I drive them, look, this is the best one, look, I've showed you what my research, this is where you go, buy here, boom, skyrocketing my sales. And this I promise applies to everything I do, and it doesn't have to be about buying something. True story, my daughter, in first and second grade, no, in kindergarten and first grade, both years she sold the most in fundraising, the most in fundraising, because I built what I learned from blogging. Content rules. Had a video, my daughter was in the video, she said, hey, we're a fundraiser right now, we're selling these things because we're looking to build projectors, and all we had was a buy button, we did it all online, there was no door knocking and going to Aunt Sally's house, we just basically built the page and then sent it to people we knew, that's it, and it spread. Put it on a blog and it spread, but asking for the sale, using the same fundamentals of a blog, because blogs can use videos and asking for the sale. Two years in a row she sold the most, number one in sales, using marketing, so I think cookies and baskets to raise money for our school, or projectors, and you can write on really, two years in a row using the basic principles of a blog, using a video, having a call to action, and our intention was, we need to raise money, buy here, versus her going, hey, my name is Allie, our school can use some funds. No, you asked for the sale, boom, asking for the sale really worked, and in your business it doesn't have to be about money, but it's about engaging your audience.
All right, and the second aha, ready for this? Maybe you don't know what that means, guru, the person who knows it all, the number one person, the person everyone goes to, you don't have to be that person to teach somebody something. Okay, so I get stuck on, well, I just know a little bit about gardening and I don't want to blog about it. If you know a little bit, the chances are you probably know 50 percent more than the average person. If you just know a little bit, if it's something you do passionately anyways, it's probably more like 90% more, like if you watch, if you're a comic book lover and you're like, you know, I'm not really good about comics, there's so many more guys at the Comic-Con fair that know more about comics, I'm not, no one's gonna read my reviews on these comics. You know 90% more than everyone else on planet Earth because that's your passion, just do it. That keeps people stuck, you don't have to be the specialist. You've got people who've got interest, do you have interest in it, understand that. I don't have, I'm not the best person on blogging, but I enjoy it, but I break it down to helping you, and if I got stuck like, well, there's two guys in California who are better than myself in blogging, I'm just not gonna do it, no, that's doing you a disservice. I want to show you how I retired by blogging, right, not being focused on being perfect. You don't have to be perfect, no one's perfect, understand that, be okay with that. You do not have to be a guru, you do not have to be the specialist, you just gotta be someone who has an interest, who has the desire to move forward, and with that desire you'll probably, on average, know that you know at least 50% more than your audience, and if it's something you do on a regular basis, or if this is something you've known for a while, you know even more than 90 percent of the people who come to your website using your blog. You can educate them, help them, teach them about the Bible, teach them how to spend, do your kids, or teach me how to change oil on your car.
The blogging platforms have streamlined and gotten so much better since 2009, since I've started. You can do it.
If I can do it, anyone can do it. Trust me. I did it part-time with kids, just tinkering around on it. Blogging is the wave of the future. You want to tap into it.
Use it. Use that to build your soapbox, to build you on your pedestal, to help you win and influence and get your word out because you are important. Your message is important. It can be viewed on a blog using articles, videos, pictures, integrated with all the social media goodies.
With you or your community, you can be faceless if you want. With all that said and done, my name is Lawrence Tam. Appreciate you. Get to blogging. Folks, obviously the income examples discussed in this video are extraordinary.
