How I met Bill Gates: with the power of Intention

The story about how I met Bill Gates is probably one of my most mystical stories. It’s one of those that is so outrageous that it’s hard to believe, unless you are a deeply mystical person. Yet, I assure you, it’s true.

Back in 1994, I was an early launch partner with Microsoft in MSN The Microsoft Network, and the Windows 95 launch was just on the horizon. It was a day that would change computing forever as we knew it.

The first time I saw Bill Gates, it was July 26, 1994. I was only 5 feet away, sitting in the front row and he was behind a podium. It was amazing – it’s like he was just there.  A lot of people don’t really appreciate how wise he is. That’s because the Bill Gates they know and what reporters hear and write about is just PR stuff.  Bill is a very brilliant person and opens up his heart and mind to you when you’re sitting in a classroom filled with business owners that have all signed NDA’s and are under contract with Microsoft.

In brief, what Bill spoke about that day is the world we’re now living – an online connected world where all information is at your fingertips with online delivery – video on demand was coming soon to hotels and the new Windows would revolutionize computing because it was the first time that online capability would be built into an operating system. Software could be delivered and sold online and consumers would buy educational content online. There was no more need for packaging or expensive software updates. Software would henceforth be updated online. This was history in the making. At the time, it seemed impossible because this was a world where people would log into AOL with a dial-up modem.  MSN would also be available thru dial-up modem. The Internet was not really even popular yet. CD-ROMS were the media distribution for computers. Everything was slow. CD’s were fast. DVD’s were the latest fad. iPods, twitter and facebook were still years away in the future. I was there, at the beginning when it all started.

I was a strange kid back in the day. I was both a programmer and a business/marketing type. At Microsoft you had to pick one track either Technical for programmers or Business – Marketing – they happened concurrently. I attended both. I would run from one side of Microsoft campus over to the other side. First to technical – grab the lecture notes and hand outs and listen for a bit – then race across to the other side to Business and catch the tail end of the business/marketing presentation. If I remember correctly, we had trainings like this quarterly in Redmond Washington, and I flew to every one of them from Maui, Hawaii where I was living at the time.

Anyway, after several such sessions, lasting over a year, it was time for the big Windows 95 launch party. August 24, 1995. The launch party was in Las Vegas. There were many Microsoft parties and Bill and Melinda were party jumping. Every time I would show up at a party, colleagues would tell me

“you just missed him”

and point to the next party.  After hitting three or four parties, each time missing Bill, it was time to turn in. It was probably around 3AM.

I had checked into the Mirage hotel where I had heard a rumor that this was the hotel that Bill preferred – to get away from the crowds. Who knows? Maybe I’ll just bump in to him I thought.

As a teenager, I had learned a technique called “automatic writing” from a master hypnotist. The process involved being able to blank your mind and carry on an imaginary dialogue with the “voices” in your head.  I always kept a spiral notepad and did some of this writing befoe going to bed. The hypnotist explained that these “voices” are your higher self or intuitive self that knows a lot more than your conscious mind. Simply trust those voices she said. The easiest way to trust them is to write them down and carry on a conversation as if you were talking to a different person.

I started to write:

The voice said “So, you want to meet Bill Gates?”

I said “Yes.”

The voice said “Get Dressed. Now. Hurry. Go down the elevator and exit straight thru and stand by the 3rd roulette table. He is on his way.”

I thought – this is crazy. My mind is making this up. BS. no way. Ah, what the hell – I’ll give it a shot.

So I got dressed went down and went over to the roulette tables.  In Las Vegas there are multiple elevators and there is no way of knowing which roulette table is the “3rd” so I decided to start pacing back and forth from one set of tables until it switched to the poker tables and then back.

After a few minutes, security stopped me and said:

We’ve been watching you in the cameras, you’re pacing back and forth and it’s making us nervous. You need to sit down and play or leave or we will have you arrested.

I said “I’m meeting someone. I don’t know which table he will be at. I promise I’ll leave if he’s not here in 5 minutes.”

They said “OK”

4 minutes later…. more pacing.

As I turned around to finish my pacing rotation, I literally RAN into a very startled Bill Gates. Automatically reached out my hand and he shook it.

I introduced myself and we spoke for a few moments.

Bill said “I have to go now. Nice meeting you.”
and that was it.

I’ll never forget that moment, because it changed my life, not because I was working with and for Bill Gates, or that I met him, but because it was the first time in my life that I had obeyed, and been proven, that the little voice in my head wasn’t just a fantasy.  I can’t explain logically how it happened, just that it did.

In the same way, I met Dave Wood of Empower Network, simply by following my internal guidance.

We all have an internal guidance system – we probably inherited it from our ancestors.  Most of us deliberately shut it down because the voices sometimes are too overwhelming and crazy. Some of us keep it active. I’m encouraging you to trust that guidance system. Practice with it.  It’s there and it will kick in when you need it the most.

On that note, my game today is Empower Network. It’s similar to my time in MSN because it has an “attitude of gratitude” and it’s an extremely big game. Also, its got 50,000 bloggers in it which is the same amount of Members I had in my Channel at MSN back in 1994. I love it. What sets Empower Network apart from everything else out there is that you can make some serious money from this. The difference? Only us, the Elite, who were invited into the inner sanctum of big companies could make money online. Today,  with Empower Network, anyone can – teenagers, work at home moms and senior citizens too:
