Now That You Have More Courage, What Will You Actually Do With It?

The fire is still smoldering behind everyone as they gather back up, feet still dirty on purpose, and David Albin doesn’t let the moment cool off before he gets to the real question. Before the walk, he’d asked the room what they would do if they had more courage. Now that the walk is over, he flips it.

What question does courage actually answer once you already have it?

“Now that you have more courage what will you do?” Albin asks the group, and he means it as something to actually answer, not a rhetorical flourish to close out the night. The whole evening, the boards, the obstacle writing, the fire itself, was never really about the ten feet of coals. It was about manufacturing a specific kind of evidence, the kind that can’t be argued with afterward, that the person standing there is capable of more than they believed two hours earlier. The question now is whether that evidence gets used or just remembered fondly.

Who are the people who just walked strangers across fire for a living?

Before getting to that, Albin brings his team out for a proper introduction, because the room just trusted these people with something serious and deserves to know who they are. Brian, an attorney from Brooklyn who now lives locally, tells the room it’s his pleasure to serve them through a breakthrough that will carry them into the future. Waz spent thirty-one years as a firefighter doing urban search and rescue, and says the most rewarding part of changing lives through those trucks was always physical, emotional, and mental all at once, which is exactly why watching a room take its first step across fire means something to him. David Jr., who lives in North Carolina, has done this so many times that his favorite part now is simply watching everyone else change. George, born and raised in South Florida, tells the group plainly that they’ll hold onto this moment for the rest of their lives, that they’re part of the tribe now, and that not one person in the group had raised a hand earlier when asked if anyone planned to skip the walk. Every single person made the decision to go.

Then Albin turns the room toward what actually needs to happen with what they were just given.

There’s the place inside the heart where we all wage war. Every day we wake up and there’s a battle raging. Every day we wake up. And there’s a beast. There’s a beast inside that we have to face. Every day we wake up and the beast is raging.

He doesn’t let that stay abstract. Every time someone stands up, looks up, and takes a decisive step forward, he tells them, that’s the beast getting tamed for one more day. The fire didn’t defeat the beast permanently. Nothing does, permanently. What the fire did was prove, physically and undeniably, that the step can be taken.

What’s actually still waiting once the adrenaline settles?

Albin asks the room directly what they got out of it, and passes a microphone around for quick, unfiltered answers. Power. Confidence. An amazing sensation. Support. Certainty. Overcome fear. A breakthrough. Massive belief. Energy. None of it is dressed up or explained at length, because none of it needs to be. Everyone in that circle just watched the same thing happen to the person standing next to them.

That’s the point where Albin brings the night back down to something practical instead of letting the high sit there unused. Obstacles didn’t disappear because of a walk across coals. Family situations are still what they were an hour ago. The same fears that showed up during the board breaking are still available to show up again next week, at home, with no crew standing at the finish line to remind anyone to keep their eyes up. So he gives the room one direct task before letting them go: turn to the person next to you, and tell them exactly what you’re going to do because of what you just did. Not what you felt. What you’re going to do differently starting now, while the proof is still fresh enough to act on.

That’s the actual handoff this entire day has been building toward, from the obstacle exercise that morning to the boards to the fire itself. Feeling capable is the easy part, and it fades. Naming the one specific thing you’re going to do differently, out loud, to another person, is what makes the feeling stick past tonight.

Brian from Brooklyn who happens to live right up the road here in Palm Beach County. It's my pleasure to be here and serve you all through this breakthrough you've had today which will carry you far into the future.

I'm Waz. I grew up, bred, born and raised down the street here and I recently just moved to Atlanta. I was a firefighter for 31 years. I do urban search and rescue.

But one of my most rewarding things about changing people's lives is saving them and in that job with those trucks running around the county is physically, here, emotional and mental and that's really super rewarding. So to watch you guys walk across that fire and make this transformation take that first step in your life is so much rewarding to me. It's an incredible experience and between Dave and I we've walked, I mean we've probably told you before, about half a million people. And to see that transformation from one end of the road and from a different perspective.

into the lane. That 15 feet changed his life. And you guys did it. It was awesome.

David Jr. I live in Boone, North Carolina. I have the pleasure to work with these guys. It's such an awesome thing to sit there.

My favorite thing doing all of these is to watch everyone else change. I've done it so many different times. The most I get out of it is watching everything that you guys get out of it. Thank you so much.

I get the microphone. I'm George. I'm from South Florida, born and raised. It's literally you'll hold this moment for the rest of your lives.

You're one of the tribe now. Just think about the moment when you wake up tomorrow. Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your lives. Just know how strong you are.

Just know how strong you are. Just know how strong this anchor is. And how many of you raise your hand we're not going to walk the fire tonight. No, there weren't any.

They all wanted to walk. You made that decision. Like any decision in life that's going to come before you, make that decision and just do it. Okay?

Don't come up with an excuse. Alright, guys. Alright, give it up for them, you guys. Thank you, guys.

Love you. I want to welcome you to a whole new way of life and a whole new way of living. So, my encouragement again to you guys is that you did something really, really special tonight. So, some of you will probably go to bed tonight and not wash your feet.

That's fine. Don't wash your feet. And, again, I would really like for you guys to also do one other thing and that's honor these guys. These guys made this possible for you.

These guys just gave you one hell of a gift. So, let's give it up for them. You guys, thank you. And we'll see you next time.

I don't actually know when he's going to come down the stairs, but I do know that the man is coming down the stairs. So, cool. I'm curious from you guys. I mean, we've heard from these guys, but what about from you?

What was it that you just got? Who got something? Raise your hand if you got something. Okay, what'd you get?

Give me something quick. Okay, let's hear it. Where's the mic? Okay.

Okay. Say, let's hear from a few of you. Just pass the mic around. Okay, what'd you get?

Oh, sorry. It just got real. Just got real. Okay.

Power, confidence. Power and confidence. Amazing sensation. An amazing sensation.

Support. Support. Certainty. Certainty.

Let's hear from like two or three more. Overcome fear. Okay, let's pass it into the middle here. A breakthrough.

A breakthrough. A breakthrough. Yeah. Nice.

Two more. Just massive belief. Just massive belief. Massive relief.

Belief. Belief. Belief. Belief.

Energy. Energy. Good. That's good.

That's good. Go ahead and bring it back up. So, this is what you've got. Now, I want you just to take it.

Oh, what's that? Oh. Dude, dude, share. What you got there, man?

One of my new team members just went all in. So, let's have that. Nice. That's for you.

That's for you right there. There. Awesome. Awesome.

So, here we are. And we've just had an amazing experience. And we all experience obstacles in life. Sometimes we're not even willing to share the things.

We've got family things. We've got things that have kept us back inside of our own mind and heart. Right? There's the place inside the heart where we all wage war.

Every day we wake up and there's a battle raging. Every day we wake up. And there's a beast. There's a beast inside that we have to face.

Every day we wake up and the beast is raging. And every time we stand up, every time we look up, every time we take a step forward, we tame the beast. Every time we take that decisive step into the furnace, we move forward and blast through obstacles. There's obstacles today.

Empower Network has started the process. Of blasting forward and moving to new heights. More importantly, today, each of you has taken an important step to really bring your power from down deep inside and to take the next step forward. And so right now, what I want to know is what will you do based on what just happened to you?

What will you do? And what's possible? Turn to your neighbor. And I want you to tell them, what are you going to do?

What are you going to do because of what you just did? Turn and make a decision. If you're at home, write down, what are you going to do because of what you just did? Everyone, go ahead.

Write down. Tell them something.
