Engineering posts sit next to diet posts sit next to a list of security jobs, and once you see why, the shape makes sense. Lawrence Tam used this blog to test which search phrases people actually type, and the job and diet pieces are that experiment running in public.
That makes it a strange but instructive read. You watch someone take a phrase like airport security jobs, or a well known celebrity diet, write a straight useful answer around it, and publish. Whether you find that cynical or clever probably depends on how your own visitor numbers are going.
Underneath the experiment sits a person who knows real things. He compares Mechanical Desktop with AutoCAD on features rather than opinion, recommends the SolidWorks books worth owning, walks through changing your DNS so working from home stops feeling slow, and lists the Mac shortcuts he genuinely uses.
The remainder is a scrapbook. There is an obituary for Nelson Mandela, a short argument about which zombie killer is the most dangerous, and a piece on grooming somebody into leadership.
Come for the engineering and technical posts, and read the job and diet ones as a demonstration of choosing what to write about.
