Thankfully, Labradors are not prone to excessive barking. That is not to say that they don’t bark or yelp at times. This can drive you, your family and your neighbours mad. In order to stay in their good books, it is extremely important to find out why this inappropriate behaviour is happening and to stop your Labrador barking as soon as possible.

Owning a dog has many benefits, one of which is protection of his pack or territory. Hearing him bark, usually tells you that someone is coming. This is fine if you are home alone as it could be a warning about an intruder. His bark could also be, a greeting, frustration, aggression or as a result of injury or illness. It could also be a compulsive behaviour – which is definitely not desirable in your pet.

To stop your Labrador from barking,

it is essential to identify the causes.

* Protection of territory.

Being a wonderful family dog, it is natural for your Labrador to try and protect his territory. They are very alert, however and can get into the habit of barking at lots of disturbances. It is up to you to establish your alpha-male position to let him know that it is your responsibility to protect the family.

* Anxiety.

Being left alone can cause what is known as ‘separation anxiety’. Your neighbours will be very frustrated at continuous barking whilst you are absent from home. This anxiety is best dealt with from puppyhood. It can be done, but is harder to address when your Lab is fully grown.

* Boredom.

Labradors were bred to hunt and were used to being outside with their owners for extended periods of time. This gave them the opportunity to run, jump, hide, swim – getting rid of their excessive energy. It is important to give your Labrador lots of opportunities to exercise. A good suggestion would be – at least 2 walks a day, playing games with him in the yard or park and, if possible, a swim in the river or dam.

* Aggression.

If your Labrador barks aggressively, it could be them trying to exert their dominance over another creature. Sometimes they can bark or nip when they get a fright. If he shows these aggressive tendencies, he needs help in eradicating the problem.

Stop Your Labrador from barking by attending a Training School

Training schools are a great way to train your dog. Here, your Labrador will learn to socialise with other dogs.it will become more comfortable in the presence of different dogs and not feel the inclination to bark.This is much more easily done as a pup. It is always harder to train your dog when it is older. Again, it is important to establish your leadership. Let him know you are in charge. Be firm and fair. Don’t be cruel.

Training your Labrador can be fun. They are quick to learn. One of the things they can learn is to ‘speak’ on command. If you manage to train your Lab to bark on command, then he will learn to only bark when he is given permission from you. They are fantastic members of the family and, using this ‘speak’ command will enable them to join in with family life and conversation. Hopefully, they will not find the urge to bark excessively.
