Fulfill Your Purpose by Creating A Vision

Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. –James Allen (As A Man Thinketh)

Yesterday I wrote a blog post about purpose and how to discover your true purpose. The next step in achieving your dreams, in fulfilling your purpose, is creating a vision.

Your purpose is WHY you do what you do, your vision is HOW you will fulfill your purpose.

For instance, my purpose is to empower others to free themselves by learning to utilize their creative powers. But when you look at that statement, it doesn’t explain how I will do it. It would be difficult to set goals that would help me to fulfill that purpose and there are countless things I could do to fulfill that purpose.

Your vision is the bridge between your purpose and your goals. It is your dream, your ideal, what you want your life to look like when you are actively fulfilling your purpose.

For a person whose purpose is to inspire and entertain others through music, their vision probably includes producing albums and going on world tour to share their music with as many people as possible.

When thinking of your vision, think of it as painting a picture in your mind. Use your powerful imagination to paint a picture as detailed as possible. How will you feel, what will you do, what will you think when that vision becomes your reality? Who will you be when you step into that vision?

The vision that you glorify in your mind, the ideal that you enthrone in your heart—this, you will build your life by. This, you will become. –James Allen (As A Man Thinketh)

Dream Big

When we were children, adults always wanted to know, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” Most kids will change their mind many times during their childhood. I know I did! But the one commonality of every dream “job” kids have is that they aren’t afraid to dream big. They answer that they want to be a doctor, a super hero, a famous artist, actress, or musician, or whatever their “hero” in life is.

They don’t put limits on their dreams. They are not “realistic.”

But then something happens as kids get older. They start to notice how adults are really living. They start to hear people talk about how hard life is. They hear adults lament over dreams that were never reached.

They hear their parents say “you can be whatever you want to be” but observe that their parents aren’t living their dreams. Or if the teenager says they want to be something great, the (usually well-meaning) adult will say something about how hard they will have to work and how difficult it will be to achieve that dream, if they can do it at all.

Worst of all, people start to tell them to be realistic.

We have all experienced one or more of these situations. Unfortunately though, nothing great was ever accomplished by a person who was being “realistic.”

The lesson: the bigger you dream the more you will become. Stretch your vision. Do not put any limits on your imagination when you are creating your vision. Whatever you dream and believe, you can achieve.

Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. –James Allen (As A Man Thinketh)

Practical Tips

The best thing you can do right now to ensure that you one day step into your vision, is to write it out on paper, and read it out loud at least twice a day. This does 2 things:

First, reading it at least twice a day and working to put real feeling behind it will dramatically increase your belief in the vision. You must believe if you are to achieve!

Second, it will make the vision become one of your most dominating thoughts. You will become so obsessed with it that you will think of it all day long. Remember that your dominating thoughts become your reality. So if your vision is your dominating thought, it is sure to become your reality.

If you need help getting inspired and dreaming bigger, start paying attention to other people who have made their dreams a reality. Search for success stories, associate with successful people. This will inspire you by showing you what’s possible so that you can begin to dream a little bigger.
