How To Live Your Life Longer [Part 1]

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

The title probably doesn’t mean what you think it means. You may think it means “How to live longer.” However, the meaning I intended to convey was “How to live your life longer.”

What’s the difference? Well, I don’t overtly intend to prolong my life. Instead, I intend to make each year seem like a lifetime.

I believe I have uncovered many truths about how time works; especially in regards to life as a human.

In this post I aim to shed some light on this topic of time. I’m sure you will be able to expand your mind with this information. Here we go !

1. What do you have?

You only have this moment. Your entire life happens right here, right now. In fact, life itself can be viewed as this moment; for now is the only place that life can happen. As you read this text on this page, you are reading it in the moment. This moment is known as”now.”

The moment is fleeting and illusory. The more of your own identity that you invest into this moment, the more suffering you will experience.

Interestingly enough, now cannot be accurately defined. This is because there is no way to divide up our experience of time into individual units that we can track. The best we seem to be able to do is divide up the natural cycles. For example, we know that a day always takes about the same amount of time. Knowing this, we can divide up a day into thousands of little pieces called seconds.

But what is a ‘second’ in actuality? A second is definitely not real. A second is simply a mental construct. In nature, seconds don’t exist. Only the now exists. By saying that a second is a mental construct, I don’t mean to downplay it. The entire universe is a mental construct. So don’t get me wrong. Seconds are cool.

If you’ve never thought about these kind of things. Now is the time.

2. What are your beliefs about this moment?

Did you ever wonder why sometimes, time seems to fly, while other times, time seems to last forever?

This may be due to your beliefs about the moment you happen to find yourself experiencing. When you enjoy an experience and you are living in the moment, time tends to compress (go faster). When you dislike and experience and you fear the moment, time tends to extend (last longer).

Lets say you were sitting in a class room. But, you don’t want to have that experience; instead, you want to be with your friends and have fun. You view this experience in the classroom as somewhat painful, annoying, and pointless.

Your experience in this classroom, as you sit there watching the clock, waiting for it to be over, will be quite long. It may seem like the class is never going to end. This is because you view the moment you are in as something to be avoided.

On the flip side, when you are having a great time with your friends and you never want the moment to end, 5 hours seems to fly by like it’s going out of style. It’s actually pretty funny!

Differentiate the moment.

What you can actually do is combine the benefits of both of these examples into one experience. You can have a seemingly long experience, but instead of experiencing pain, you can experience joy!

You can do this by changing your momentary experience as often as possible. You need to be experiencing your life in as many different good ways as possible. Experience your life differently every day. The key here is that the more separate experiences you can create throughout a day. month, year, etc, the more “filled” that period of time will seem in your memory.

I don’t know about you, but I want to have days that seem like they last a long time while simultaneously doing things that I love. To do that, I need to fill my time with as many different individual events and good experiences as possible.
