How to Stay Consistent

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

This post is all about how to be and stay consistent in your life. If you have ever wanted to change; lose some weight, make more money, be a better parent, grow spiritually, etc, keep reading!

First off I will say that no one is truly inconsistent. Everyone is consistent in that they are living their life in a certain way. Now, whether or not you are living the life you want to live is a different story. But still, you are consistent.

I always thought of myself as ‘the inconsistent person’. Yeah, that’s me, the guy who can’t stick to his promises. It wasn’t until many years of living with this belief about myself that I realized that I wasn’t inconsistent. I was just having trouble being consistent in a new way.

I wanted to be consistent in being awesome, fun, happy, wealthy, prosperous, interesting, physically fit, healthy, and so forth. But instead, what I was consistent in, was being overweight, unfit, socially awkward, poor, fearful,…

Once I realized this, it wasn’t nearly as difficult to impact real change in my life. Being consistent wasn’t a question of having to become a different person. It was now a question of “How do I become consistent in a new way?”

Well, “How do you DO it?” …is probably what you are asking.

You don’t have to watch this right this second, but be sure to MAKE TIME to watch it! This seminar (4 parts) has helped me a whole lot in my journey to becoming consistent!

And be sure to TAKE NOTES.

The Philosophy of Consistent Action

What you need to do to become consistent in a new way is to change the way you see things. You need to change your philosophy. If you think about it, you can’t change what happens to you. The only thing you can change is how you react to things. Once you grow in the areas of education and personal philosophy, becoming consistent will be automatic.

When it comes down to it. If you view every challenge as an obstacle, as something bad, or as something that you want to avoid or run away from, you will just run in circles for the rest of your life. You will not grow as a person or become consistent in new ways. What you need to do is start viewing your challenges as opportunities to stay consistent. You will have a complete shift in perception.

For example: When I come to any point during my day where I am faced with a conflict in my mind where I am thinking something like, “Should I go work out or just wait until tomorrow?” I remind myself that this is an opportunity to stay consistent, and that if I do go work out, I will become better as a person and staying consistent in new ways won’t be difficult. It gets easier each time you say yes and you choose to conquer your challenges.

You must align your personal philosophy with your life. LIVE your philosophy. Don’t just talk about it. Being consistent starts with being honest with yourself. If you fail to stay consistent in a new way, you are only cheating yourself. This is important–especially when “no one is watching.”

Make A Habit of Saying “YES” To Consistent Action

All we ever have is this moment, so it is important to master the ability to say yes. “YES” I will go to work out! Say it aloud with confidence. I know this feels dumb at first, but once you do it for a while, it is quite an easy and effective way to change your mind right on the spot and remain consistent.

Whatever you do, do not cower in fear and try to find a rock to hide under (metaphorically speaking). Do not run away from your problems, as they will come back to haunt you and be 10 times worse. You know this already. You just need me to reenforce it for you. It’s okay. Make the choice yourself from now on. Say, “Yes, I will be consistent in this new way!”

Each time you conquer your challenges by saying yes to them, they will become easier to conquer the next time around. The only difference between an insurmountable problem and a healthy habit that is effortless is consistent action in a specific direction. Be sure that direction is the direction that you want for yourself!

Stay Consistent One Day At a Time

I have only ever committed myself to one week of real change. But this commitment led me to a whole month of change. Now, I am so involved in change that I don’t want to EVER go back to living a boring life again!

You must realize that staying consistent is all about tackling one little challenge at a time, every day, all day long. The nice thing is that after a couple of weeks, what you once considered a challenge is now automatic and no longer a challenge. Now you have new challenges. In time, these challenges will also become automatic. This is how we grow as people and become consistent in desirable ways.

Make a habit out of tackling every single daily challenge head on and you will create a life of consistent goodness. Set your sights on your target or goal, however distant it may seem, and stick to it. Revolve your life around your goals, rather than your goals revolving around your life.

Being Consistent While Facing Challenges

It can be tough to face your challenges head on.

When you are facing a challenge, think of it like this. You are about to break through to a new level. You are on the verge of success. Success is just one more challenge away. “Staying consistent all comes down to this one challenge and I am not going to fail myself.” This is what I say to myself in my head. You will find yourself taking much larger strides than you did before if you take on this perspective; this philosophy.

Realize that every time you overcome a challenge, no matter how small it may seem, you are adding greatly to your ability to stay consistent.

Harsh Winters Build Consistent Success

Lastly, be prepared for the ‘winters.’ Winter is when you feel like things just aren’t working out. You may feel like the amount of stress you have subjected yourself to is just too much. Remember that this stress is part of the growth process. Know that you can and will make it through the winter and there will be spring on the other side, in all of its glory.

Winters can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 20 hours to 20 days. You just can’t know for sure. Today I had a short winter where it felt like everything was just too much to cope with. I reminded myself that winters come and go.

Now, roughly 3 hours later, I feel like a whole different person. I could have quit, but I would have taken the road back to my old life that I do not want for myself any more. Just recognize that when winter comes, it is something to celebrate because it means you are growing and becoming a new person consistent in a new way.
