Fear (Part 1)

Okay today I want to take about something in your business that most everyone does not like to think about. And we are going to do something just a little bit different. I am going to share with you a story that not many people but my closest friends and family know. See today was my twin’s birthday. And while the day is all about them, this is the day that I had to face the very biggest fear in my life.
When I was pregnant with my twins my husband was on deployment. So I went through the whole stinking pregnancy without him. I hated it. But I digress. I had some health issues and had to watch what I did, not to mention that being pregnant with multiple babies all ready makes your pregnancy high risk. Thank goodness we had some of the most amazing friends anyone could ask for and that I could ask them for help.
So I had spent the day playing and hanging out with one of these friends, her name is Kat and she is awesome. We drove all over the place and she went with me to get this video camera that for some reason I just had to get that day. I knew I was not going to be able to go and get it any other day I had to have that day. So she went with me. Kat was pregnant too and 5 weeks behind me. So we called it our preggo day of shopping. LOL.
We spent all day out and I was not feel all that well, but feeling a little out of it was nothing new. So we ate dinner at my house, she helped me get some of the things set up in our one bedroom apartment for the twins a John would not be likely be home when I delivered. It is so funny when I think of that day now. Neither of us knew how soon they would be there. I was 25 weeks and 3 days pregnant.
Then It Happened
I went to bed around midnight and woke up at 2:20 and felt like I was going to wet myself, but when I sat up on the side of the bed water gushed all over the floor. I still had to pee like a race horse so I knew right then I was in preterm labor. My mind raced. I had to pee. I sat down peed and prayed that was all that was going to happen.
I called Kat but she did not answer her phone. So I called my other friend Amber she lived downstairs too. Her husband Larry answered and then just set the phone down and fell back to sleep. I was naked and needed help getting some clothes on. Amber answered and when I told her I was in labor she panicked. I told her to come up stairs and help me get dressed. She was fixing to get Troy to come too and I had to remind her no that I was not dressed. Now if you wondering why I was naked. Well hello all my stuff got soaked when I sat up and I had to take it off.
Then I called Labor and Delivery at Balboa. I do not know if you have ever dealt with military nurses before, but some of them have the bed side manner of mud. Lucky me I got mud on the phone. I told her that I had lost my mucus plug 5 days ago and that I was pretty sure that my water had just broke and that I was at 25 weeks. She told me that I had probably peed on myself, but if I wanted to waste my gas I could come in. And she hung up.
Now I was mad and scared as hell and still naked and worried about losing my babies because if I bent over to put on my pants. Luckily Amber (who was 23 weeks pregnant) arrived all though frantic. It cracked me up even then that I had to tell her to calm down. She helped me get dressed and kept gagging because she kept stepping in the amniotic fluid all over the floor. Now I know it was not funny, but I was trying so hard not to laugh. She helped me get some things together and then she went to try and wake up Kat.
Kat was sleeping hard. I came down the stairs to my apartment as I saw Amber walking back across the court yard. I told her that Kat slept with the bedroom window open and we should go around back and wake her up there. I needed someone calm to keep Amber calm and Kat was going to have to do that. Because Troy her husband was still half asleep and trying to get dressed.
So I waddled while Amber ran through the parking lot to Kat’s window. We had to go back there anyway to get to the car. So I got to Kat’s window just in time to hear her tell Amber I was asleep upstairs and she needed to go back to bed. Man this was turning into a circus. So Kat got up. Amber ran across the parking lot and fell. I had to tell her to calm down again or she was going to be in a room beside me.
She headed off to get dressed and Troy came out to announce he was going to drive me to the hospital. They had a two door Camaro. That was not happening and as I was telling Troy there was no way he was taking me in that when Kat came out.
She looked exhausted. She announced she was going to fix the problem and drive me to the hospital in my car. I asked what took her so long to get outside and she said she was having the no pants dream only to realize that as she was fixing to step outside, that she really had forgotten her pants. I decided in that moment I was going to driving myself to the hospital. This was getting crazy.
Yes I was crazy enough to drive myself to the hospital in labor!
So I drove myself and Kat in my car so that I was not alone, in labor and driving. Like I said crazy, and Troy and Amber were to follow. I got the hospital with no traffic in 15 minutes flat and I did not even speed. Troy and Amber showed up about 10 minutes later because Troy got lost.
And the three pregnant ladies marched to the elevator got the third floor and made the trek to labor and delivery. Why the hospital but one of the most used areas on the third floor and made it difficult to get to for women that could be in preterm labor is beyond me. But when the three of us descended onto Labor and Delivery they did not know what to do or who even need care at that point. So I told the nurse my story.
She got me to a room and had me change into a gown. This time Kat was with me. I am telling you when you are pregnant and need help you just start not to care who the heck sees you naked at that point. The nurse took my information and put on the monitors to the babies. There was definitely something going on. And they were monitoring the contractions. Those had not gotten bad yet. And she rushed off to get a doctor.
As I was getting through telling the doctor my story and the fact that I had lost my mucus plug 5 days before and was having what I thought were just Braxton Hicks contraction. In walked Miss Mud. She started telling me if I was having symptoms I should of followed up with the same smug voice that she had told me I had just peed myself but I could waste my gas if I wanted too. I let that woman have it right there. (Now I do not like being mean, but she had put my children’s lives at risk. What if I had believed her. Thankfully I knew more.) I told her that this was my pregnancy I was taking fine care of myself and that no I had not peed on myself, I knew what the hell I was talking about and she needed to stay the hell out of my sight for the rest of my stay at the hospital.
I looked back over to see the Doctor, Nurse, and Kat all looking at me sort of shocked and then when she left they tried really hard not to laugh. Apparently she was not a very well liked person for the attitude she had around there. And she stayed away from me the rest of my time there. Once they took the test they confirmed what I knew these babies were trying to make an entrance. So they started pumping me full of steroids for their lungs. Then it all became real. I was really here, this was really happening and my husband was going to miss the birth of his children.
