My Spouse Just Does Not Get It

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Do you ever feel like you have a ton of people counting on you and yet for some reason it does not feel like you are being supported?  I know that I feel that way sometimes.  I am working hard to make things work or to try and learn and I feel that my husband just does not get it.

Sometimes it feels like I am speaking another language when I am talking to him.  It kind of frustrates me because after 14 years of marriage I have learned to speak gamer so I just wish sometimes he would take the time to speak entrepreneur.

We often have talks about setting goals or making vision boards, but they are too much like the “what if…” game for him.  He loves thinking about it all, but actually implementing the plans and the work toward them are another thing.   He hates schedules and does not like me telling him what I need from him in order to be able to work.

It can seem hopeless some days and it causes a ton of frustration, hurt feelings, and few arguments.  It really is not fun and it is something that can irritate the living crap out of you if you are someone that is used to just getting to business and getting things done.  So what is a entrepreneur to do?

Well the first thing I will tell you is keep doing the work on the vision boards and the other things.  It might seem like a giant waste most of the time, especially if you feel like it is going nowhere in the beginning.  The reason that you want to keep at is that eventually it will start to make an impact on what your spouse sees or thinks.

And keep talking.  If you are frustrated find a common ground to discuss the matter on and be willing to make changes or compromises to help your spouse with your working toward something or with the fact that you see a bigger picture than they are able to.  It also helps you share your beliefs.  It might not be their belief or experience about money or working for yourself.  The more that you share the more they can start to understand what it is that drives you.

Now that being said if you are in a situation where your drive is something that is causing issues and you cannot share with your spouse or your friends and family then you need to make sure to build yourself a community of like minded friends online to help keep you going and to bounce ideas off of.

And just to show you that it might take time, this is what my hubby brought me yesterday.  It was  a little present.  He wanted me to know that he does support me and he does really want for this to work.  Even if he does not like having to help me so I can get things done.  He knows that if we are going to have a better life it is going to take me being able to dream, see and do.  In order for us to be the people and parents we want to be,  we have to do the things those people do, in order to have the ability to have the things we need to accomplish our goals.

The Billion Dollars My Husband Brought Me for Motivation

And the yummy money bar made me feel like a billion dollars.

So keep sharing, don’t fight, share.  Stay calm and understand that mindset is something you have to grow and grow and grow.  It can take years.  It can take decades and you never can stop learning mindset once you start.  So it will take those that don’t get it, time to make the change, but if they love you they will.  Just let them work on it in their own way.
