magic of thinking bigChapter two of The Magic Of Thinking Big : Cure Yourself of Excusitis, The Failure Disease.

You may or may not like this chapter of The Magic of Thinking Big, it talks about mindset and it describes the “mind-deadening thought disease called Excusitis. This disease basically explains the difference between the person who is going places compared to the person barely doing anything with their life.  If you simply took the time to study the differences between the successful person and those that aren’t getting anywhere, you would see that the successful person is not making excuses.

Unfortunately, as humans, we find it easy to make excuses for ourselves and even others.  For example, are you one of those people that made New Years Resolutions to lose weight, eat better, exercise more, find love, make money, and so on?  How’s that working for ya?  If you ask yourself honestly, can you come up with some reasons (excuses) as to why you didn’t accomplish the goals you had for yourself?

Chapter two of The Magic of Thinking Big goes deeper into explaining the four most common forms of “Excusitis.” Here is a brief overview of what the four excuses are. You will have to read the book for yourself to get a more in depth explanation.

The Magic Of Thinking Big: 4 Most Common Forms of Excusitis:

1. My Health Isn’t good: Many people claim their health isn’t the best and they use it as an excuse for some reason. Schwartz talks about a book written by Dr. Schindler called How to Live 365 Days a Year where Dr. Schindler states that 3 out of 4 beds in a hospital is filled by a person suffering from Emotionally Induced Illness because they didn’t know how to handle their emotions.

You get to choose how you are going to live with health issues in your life and the book gives 4 suggestions on how to deal with this excuse.

  1. Refuse to talk about your health
  2. Refuse to worry about your health
  3. Be grateful that your health is as good as it is
  4. Remind yourself often that “It’s better to wear out than rust out.”

2. You’ve got to have brains to succeed:

This excuse is very common.  People believe they don’t have the smarts or brains to succeed. Unfortunately most people won’t talk about this excuse and they won’t openly admit they don’t feel smart enough. We need to stop selling ourselves short in this area and quit thinking that they we don’t measure up to the next guy.  After all, it doesn’t matter how intelligent you are, it’s what you do with your intelligence that matters.

3 ways you can deal with this excuse:

  1. Never underestimate your own intelligence or overestimate the next guys intelligence
  2. Remind yourself several times daily that your attitude is more important than your intelligence.
  3. Remember the ability to think is much better than the ability to memorize facts.

3. I’m too old ( or too young)

This excuse involves thinking you are never the right age for something.  People either think they are too old, or too young.  The most common one you will hear is the “I’m too old” excuse.

4. My case is different, I attract bad luck.

This excuse has to do with cause and effect. Nothing happens without cause. Funny thing is, you often hear people blame their problems on bad luck. Are you guilty of doing this yourself? In the book, Schwartz conveys a story about 3 sales man competing for one job and what lead to the one salesman being picked over the others.

The Magic of Thinking Big gives you two ways to conquer this excuse in your life.

  1. Accept the law of cause and effect. Preparation, planning, success producing thinking are what lead to good fortune: not luck.
  2. Don’t be a wishful thinker. Success comes from doing things and mastering the principles of success.

So there you go, this was just a very brief overview of chapter two of The Magic of Thinking Big. To really understand these forms of Excusitis and how to get past them, I encourage you to read this chapter for yourself.

To Your Success,

Regina Floyd
