The Game Changer!
Today I got to play a little with the grand kids, something that is always fun! They are different ages, so I have to play differently with each one.
My ten year old grandson wasn’t here today, but when he is, we always play whatever he wants to play. One thing I notice about children, when they play, they like to change the rules so that they will win.
Here is an example. There is a game he likes to play whenever we are outside, either walking or in the car. He watches out for a particular colored car, and he has to call it and slug me in the arm when he sees one. But, if I find the same colored car, he will change the rules so that the car has to be in motion, or have another color mixed, or in some way he will always win!
When I was just a father, rules were always important, and following the set rules could not change. I had to enforce the rules, no matter what. In that way, the children were taught to respect authority, and respect rules.
Funny thing happened when I became a grandfather, its like a whole new situation. When playing with the grand kids, it isn’t so important now to keep the letter of the rules! In fact, it seems more important to me that they have fun and enjoy their time with me! Becoming a grandparent was a Game Changer!
Under the Old Covenant, the time before Jesus’ death on the cross, rules were extremely important. There were “Fathers” that enforced the rules, and made sure that they were kept. The only way to win was hard for people, and nearly impossible. God knew that there was no way for us to win, so He sent His one and only son to be the Game Changer!
When Jesus gave Himself to the cross, His last words were “It is finished!” According to the culture of the day, these words meant something more than His life was over. These same words were written over jail cell doors when their sentence was over, or if they were in debtors prison, their debt was paid. Now, the rules weren’t changed, nor were they abolished, but they were “fulfilled”, meaning that the “game” was over!
When Jesus died, He didn’t abolish the rules, and He didn’t destroy the game. But He did finish it for us! Now, I know life isn’t a game, but it is an analogy. But the truth is, the rules were “fulfilled”, the debt was paid, the sentence was served! What does that mean for us? We’re free, that is what it means! Some people think that we have to keep playing by the old rules, the ones that Jesus took care of. But, as Paul says, ” if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; and look! All things have become new!”
The Game Changer!
Why do some people still want to play by the old rules? I’m not totally sure, but I believe it has something to do with control and power. The “rule keepers” want to be in charge of everything. But there isn’t anything to be in charge of!
We are like kids, we like to make rules that stack life in our favor. But it already is! Jesus has won, all we have to do is to believe in Him, accept what He has done!
So here you have it. You are free. Free to live your life without worrying about the rules. Here is a quote from Jesus, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Here is your call to action! What do you do with what you know? If you are following “rule keepers”, switch to the One who finished for you. Its true, He took your place, paid your debt, completed your sentence. His way is easy, His burden is light!
He is our Game Changer!

Hi Tim! Very interesting experience of playing with your grandsons, I guess they have a very creative way of thinking and come out with their own rules hahaha and yeap we are free, we have always been, the problem is people do not believe it. Thanks for sharing it! Take care!
So true, Deigo, but believing is key! Thanks!
