Be The Salt!

Be The Salt!

Here is a verse from Matthew 5:13:

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

This verse is nestled in the section of what is known as “The Sermon on the Mount”, where Jesus lays out Kingdom Culture. First a little background.

Remember that in Jesus’ day, there were no refrigerators. So the only way to keep meat was to pack it in salt. Without salt, meat would go bad very fast and wasn’t worth keeping. Once the salt was well used, it was used as a pathway material so that after people walked on it, it was packed down nicely, but worthless as anything else.

Have you ever heard the saying, “Facts tell, stories sell”? Jesus was all about stories. It was the best way to convey a message. The part about salt was a hit, because the people knew exactly what He was saying.

I believe we all have purpose. We all have a reason for being here. Believe it or not, everyone is placed here on earth to solve a problem. Now, I know that we all know someone who seems to be a problem, but they are here for a purpose too. That person in the mirror is here for a purpose.

You don’t know what that purpose is? I believe you can find it somewhere in your passion. What is it you are passionate about? I am passionate abut getting the news about Jesus’ Kingdom out, and to help people find where they fit in it. That place, as I have said before, is in your passion!

Think about it for a minute, where would this world be without some people and their passions? Think for a moment about Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. We might have been a darker place if he hadn’t persisted with his passion. And what about Henry Ford and his passion for the automobile? Horses are still celebrating. The Wright Brothers and their airplane? Hey, the list goes on and on! There are medical advancements, peace advancements,  and many many others!

So you are here for a reason. If you aren’t doing your passion, there is a part of this world that is missing out on what you have to offer! No matter what it is that you are passionate about, this world needs your passion. Without it, the world is missing your “flavoring”!

Now, Jesus was talking about being a force to change the world where you are. In fact, in the next verses He talks about being a “Light on a hill”, that we shouldn’t be hidden. So, no matter who you are, ““Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

So, as they say, track with me for a moment. God is your Creator. He made you with all the gifts and talents you possess. So, when you “shine”, and when you season this world with your brand of seasoning, and you don’t hide it, you are actually giving glory to God, because He put it in you!

Some people think that this is only referring to the religious, but if you follow me, you know that I don’t believe that God thinks that way. His world is neither religious, nor secular, it is His world. The Bible says that He created us for His pleasure, and I believe He created us in His image and likeness, with creativity. If we stifle the creativity within us, then we are not living to the fullness of who we are, or who we could be.

So, as Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” As Isaiah said “Rise and shine!” And, Be The Salt! This world needs you!
