Nagoya to Tokyo – A Road Trip

Along with London, New York, Paris and Rome, Tokyo is oft considered one of the world’s great cities.

And yep, I know there is many more so don’t get all offended if I didn’t include yours!

12 years ago I left London and moved to Nagoya, Japan. Nagoya is a city of approx. 2 million folk and is located in the heart of Japan, about half way between Tokyo and Osaka.

I’ll never forget flying to Japan all those years ago with a job lined up as an English teacher. A few months earlier, we had to choose a city of preference as to where we’d like to live and work.

I had no idea so I said nowhere too rural, and not Tokyo. I got Nagoya and flipped open my Lonely Planet. Pages upon pages on Kyoto, Tokyo, the food, culture.etc.

But where was the Nagoya info? Then I found it… and no sooner had I done so, it ended. Nothing to see here was the message…and that hasn’t changed.

Despite being half an hour from the city of Toyota (which helps the local economy no end), it is bereft of anything of interest. Still, boring is good sometimes. As I often appreciate going elsewhere and can enjoy the peace while here.

Anyway, this blog post is about a trip I took a few weeks ago from Nagoya to Tokyo when I had family visiting.

Nagoya to Tokyo – A Road Trip

We all got up at about 5 AM (with kids it takes an age to get ready) and left home at about 6 (we had packed the night before).

Nagoya is about 260 KM away from Tokyo, and Japan has a great, albeit expensive highway system.  The bus usually takes about 5/6 hours, but as I was the only driver (being tired is safer than being in the passenger seat with my wife driving)

Basically it is one long road and pretty soon, everyone was asleep (all 7 of them…I have  big car). Still, I was enjoying the drive and it was smooth going.

The trip from Nagoya to Tokyo was more than half over when the first of the kids began stirring so it was time to stop off for a coffee. Luckily, there was a surprise coming up.

Everyone knows Mt. Fuji, but seeing it close up is breath-taking. Climbing it not so (that is for another time)

Nagoya to Tokyo – Half Way (just over actually)

After a few pics, it was time to get behind the wheel again.

More long straight roads. Luckily, we drive on the left (correct) side in Japan, so being British does make life easier in Japan.

Not long after and we were off the highway and on the Tokyo ring road (on which the film Blade Runner was based).

Our first goal was the Tokyo Sky Tree (Disney was to come later). You can see the view from my car as we were approaching… And yes, I was stopped at a red light when I took this.

Nagoya to Tokyo – Coming up to the Sky Tree

The Tokyo Sky Tree opened to the public in May 2012. It is the highest Tower in Asia (at the time of writing) and has to be seen to be believed. It is fairly hard to miss given the size.

If you ever get to Tokyo, you HAVE to see this place. The glass floors at the top are really something else.

So the trip from Tokyo to Nagoya was smooth, a bit tiring, and took about 4 and a half hours. If you are ever in Japan, Tokyo is a must see. Nagoya is a must avoid, unless you fancy a beer with me before going onto somewhere else.
