Christine Kitchen (Clarke)

She wrote about the importance of drinking water while lying in a clinic with tubes in her arms, being treated for a kidney condition that produces stones by the hundred. Christine Kitchen mentions that almost in passing, and the post is better for the setting rather than sentimental about it.

The travel writing is the strongest thing here. She describes the red sandstone fort at Agra, where the emperor who built the Taj Mahal was imprisoned and could see it from his rooms, and she is honest about being shepherded around on a timetable with no chance to wander.

Another post defends a French town whose name became attached to a terrible crime, and argues that everything else it deserves recognition for vanished overnight.

The practical piece nobody else would write covers inheritance law and the formalities of buying property in France, which is exactly the sort of thing people discover too late.

Nine posts. Read the Agra one, the water one, and the property one if France is in your plans.
