Brain and the Nervous System: The Dream Team (Part 1)

Brain, everyone owns one, we carry it around and it allows us to do our daily activities and routines effortlessly, yet what happens when we set new goals that break the routine, new talents we wish to develop, new challenges we need to face? … Sometimes we freeze, sometimes we fail, sometimes we downright quit, and why is this?
We think it’s too big of a task for us, too big of a challenge, too impossible of a goal, or that we’re not good enough, but what’s more, we forget that we’re carrying around a 3 pound perfect computer that, if correctly directed, can achieve, face and tackle every situation, just like in our routines, effortlessly.
Not many people know this even though books like Psycho-cybernetics have been around since the 60′s, just to mention one of many, but this is how I got introduced to the irrefutable truth that we all own an amazing, impossible to replicate, computer that is there to make our lives easy and successful.
Since we ignore this knowledge, we live life doing things the hard way and thinking only certain people can do things, only certain people have talents, only certain people are geniuses. In reality we can ALL develop our dormant powers, talents and geniuses, if we direct our brains properly, and this is a science that is everybody’s business to learn, for we all own an amazing brain.
Neuroscience sometimes is a reserved topic for the intellectuals or for scientists, but the knowledge should be of popular domain, and here I will do my best to introduce the basics to you, so that you too, make the best use of your brain and stop following the sheep herd that believes life’s too hard, and that they can’t do this or can’t do that. Which is a sad excuse and waste considering you have such power inside of your head.
In an effort to keep this as simple for you, I will go straight to the HOW to’s and WHY’s, and skip going any further on the WHAT is.
So How to use your brain to your advantage as opposed to against you?
First of all, you need to know that past memories, traumas, and the daily influences we let in our brain (TV, Radio, close friends, family, etc), contribute in building links (beliefs) in a part of our brain that does all things in autopilot, a part of our brain that already stopped paying attention to your conscious thoughts. It is also known as the subconscious, unconscious, servo mechanism or automatic success mechanism.
Those links stay with you for as long as you don’t exercise modifying them and they make you react automatically to situations similar to those lived in the past (habits). It may be 40 years later and you may still respond automatically to a situation that impacted you in a positive or a negative way back in the day. Example: You may still be afraid of elevators, because as a kid once you got stuck, it created a trauma and you keep reacting with fear even 40 years later.
This sometimes can be good if we are reacting automatically positively, or to our own detriment if we keep reacting automatically negatively, and hence experiencing the same mistakes or unpleasant sensations over and over and over, becomes a vicious circle we don’t know how to get out of.
A good way to correct our automatic reactions to turn them into intelligent responses that will grant us control when facing events, is to go inside, within our brain and do some thorough editing of the information contained in our unconscious mind.
One way to do this, and you won’t believe how simple it is, is to visualize yourself in the situation and imagine reacting properly and in control of your emotions; usually when we are in control of our emotions we delay our reactions, therefore making more sensible decisions, which will make for all the difference in the world, and is the thin line between making your life easy or hard.
For more detailed information on how to perform these exercises referred to as “The theater of your mind”, please read/listen to the book Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz.
So Why are these brain exercises helpful and why do they work ALWAYS?
Because of many reasons, but the simplest is, once we edit information contained in our unconscious mind, we will start obtaining new results inevitably, because we have created this new self image of ourselves in which we have poise, control and new capabilities that lay dormant before we redesigned our new way of seeing ourselves in our brain.
This new self image then is communicated to the nervous system, the nervous system is in charge of FEELING who we are NOW and creates a groove like a groove in a record that will be played exactly in that way, every time when facing that same or similar situation, without giving it second thought, without stuttering. In other words unconsciously automatic.
The whole point is to not have to worry consciously about what we do, for if we worry, we’re doing things the hard way, like trying to tie our shoe laces by thinking it through every single time, or riding a bike basically having to re-learn every time we get on.
These are supposed to be automatic skills, once learned, never forgotten, even for the things that are seemingly impossible to you right now, you can make them automatic.
The motto of psycho-cybernetics is, “Once hard, now easy.”
Things like solving algebra problems, or playing an instrument, you can never perform if you’re being too conscious about the process, it needs to be automatic in order for it to be effortless, therefore beautiful and worth the work of a genius. We develop our genius by re-engineering our self image in the theater of our mind. It IS that simple.
Sometimes things like these are really hard to believe because of their simplicity, but it’s with simplicity precisely that life is bound to be lived.
