Detroit Red Wings Set New NHL Record With 21 Consecutive Home Wins

Congratulations to the Detroit Red Wings on their new NHL record. The Red Wings won 21 consecutive games on home ice by beating the Dallas Stars 3-1 on Tuesday night which surpassed the old record of twenty. The two teams who used to share the record of 20 straight home wins was the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers. Winning four of five in a row at your home barn is impressive, never mind winning a mind blowing 21 in a row. So again, congratulations to the Winged Wheel on their accomplishment. They have a few home games coming up on Friday against the Nashville Predators and on Sunday versus the San Jose Sharks so there is a chance they could even stretch out the record a little more.
Is This Record A Big Deal?
The National Hockey League has been around a long time and since only two other teams have done it before, One can say it is definitely worth talking about. Back in 1929-30 when the Boston Bruins were able to do it, not to take anything away from them, but there were only 5 other teams to play against then. Although, the Bruins did actually win 22 games in a row, 2 of them were carried over to the next season which the NHL does not count for record purposes. The 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers in their streak to 20 were the only team to do it in regulation which is saying something. The old Broad Street Bullies most likely bullied their way and I could imagine playing in Philly against this tough team and listening to their tough fans in Philly would be pretty intimidating to play your game plan. Now for the Detroit Red Wings accolades, they did it a very competitive era of the NHL. In the post cap era, especially the last few years, the parody of the league is so close. Eighty-two years ago the record was set, 36 years ago the record was tied and February 14th, 2012, the record was broken. You could say this record was worth mentioning. As of now, it’s Twenty-one and counting.

The fans at the end of the game seemed to enjoy the victory. From the sounds coming from the Joe in the dying seconds, it seemed like the Wings were closing out a playoff series. As a huge Red Wings fan myself, I actually gave up some tickets I had to the last few games leading up to the record. I was too nervous and scared that the game I go to, could be the one they lose. I have tickets to the next two home games and now I’m not as nervous to go because if they lose, it will suck but hey, they still got the record. I think I will give up my Friday tickets and just go to Sunday. That way, they can set the record to 22 and hopefully I’ll get to see the 23rd live!
