Los Angeles Kings Win The Stanley Cup – Wayne Gretzky Happy
The Los Angeles Kings have received their fair share of congratulations and compliments on their Stanley Cup win, but few words will resonate more than those from one of the team’s all-time greats.
“It is a great day for hockey,” -Wayne Gretzky told TSN’s Pierre LeBrun on Tuesday.
“(It) couldn’t have happened to a nicer group of management and coaches that believed in a team that clearly took their play to another level. All hard work and very unselfish, they became true champions.”
Gretzky played eight seasons with the Kings from 1988 to 1996 and led them to the Stanley Cup Final in 1993.
He received a loud standing ovation at the Staples Center prior to Game 3 between the Kings and Devils after being introduced to drop the puck for the ceremonial faceoff.
Wayne Gretzky Kept Low Profile During Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup Run
Until then, Gretzky tried to keep a low profile during the Kings’ playoff run because he didn’t want to take any attention away from the accomplishments of the team.
“The biggest thing of all is that those two teams both earned the right to get there and both had worked so hard,” he told TSN’s Pierre LeBrun last month. “I just really felt it wasn’t my place to sort of steal some of the attention away from the players and the organizations that worked so hard to get there. I thought it was just best to stay on the sidelines.”

City of Los Angeles Waits 44 Years For Kings First Stanley Cup Win

Forty Four years is a long ass time. That is ten years longer then I have even been alive for. Think of all the inventions and how technology has advanced since the year 1967, when the Los Angeles Kings came into the National Hockey League.
You would definitely not be reading about the Kings winning the cup the way you are today if they were able to hoist Lord Stanley say 25 years ago. The Internet wasn’t even around way back then. Hell, computers were just starting to be introduced into peoples homes in 80′s. Even if you were able to watch the Stanley Cup Finals, it would have been on a very small, big and ugly black and white television that only got one or two channels and the only HD you would get is HARDLY DETERMINING which team has the puck and which team just scored.
Although other NHL teams have gone on longer streaks without winning hockey’s holy grail, The Los Angeles Kings definitely still deserve a huge congratulatory mention. The Chicago Blackhawks ended a 50 year drought in 2009 and back in 1994, the New York Rangers ended a huge 54 year drought without the cup.
Back in 1993, some guy by the name of Wayne Gretzky helped guide the LA Kings to their first shot at the big dance but came up short against the Montreal Canadians. There was a huge buzz in the city back then and this year was no different. I think the best comment, or tweet if you will was:
Congrats LA Kings! So many of your fans have been waiting weeks for this first championship! #StanleyCupFinal @ThePresObama
Haha. That was good. You can’t blame the fans for wanting to jump on the Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup run bandwagon. The electricity the team generated throughout the city was contagious… and the team hadn’t won anything in 44 years… did I mention that?
