Creating a Personal Vision Statement

What is a Personal Vision Statement?

Creating a personal vision statement is about writing a statement of the end result we desire for specific areas of our lives.  As an example, the statements could be about financial goals, spiritual desires or our marriage. Really, it is about anything that we feel is important to fulfilling life’s ultimate goals.

By creating a personal vision statement we are giving ourselves an overall view of where we want to go.  A good analogy is the box cover for a puzzle. If we are to do a puzzle without the cover we have no end result to guide us or shoot for.  We would likely end up getting frustrated with all the details of where individual pieces go.  Therefore, a personal vision statement is looking at the final creation without clearly observing or even knowing the smaller steps along the way.

Why Creating a Personal Vision Statement is Important

Creating a personal vision statement and posting it where you can read it daily is important.  Your vision statement is like a navigator to reaching success. It actually gives you permission to take chances and fail.  If you have a clear vision, you will less likely let challenges get in your way. You realize quickly that the direction you are taking is not inline with your vision and you get back on track.  Eventually your written vision statement becomes part of who you are.  You are more likely to avoid distractions, stay focused and accomplish the smaller goals that lead to long term success.

How do I Start Creating a Personal Vision Statement?

In creating a personal vision statement, it does not need to be long and detailed. However, I would urge you to think big and beyond your current situation in life. The size of your vision dictates the size of your results. Also, I would not make it about money.  Instead think about what the money would allow you to accomplish. You should develop your personal vision statement from your innermost core.

For the best start to creating a personal vision statement, you may want to draw inspiration from Stephen Covey’s book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”.  Specifically habit number two – begin with the end in mind. In the book he talks about experiencing your own funeral and what you would want others to say about your life. If you block out everything and really think about this, it may be an eye-opener. I know it was for me.
