GetResonse tutorial: setup for Empower Network, Big Idea Mastermind, and Join A Mentor
Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.
This tutorial assumes you already know how to setup a campaign (subscriber list) with GetResponse (click if you need help with this) and I’ll will walk you through the steps to integrate GR with Empower Network, Big Idea Mastermind, and Join A Mentor.
GetResponse Setup With Empower Network
Just a heads-up first here, you would only want to setup GetResponse with Empower Network if you wish to promote the following capture page found in your Empower Network back office under “My Tools” -> “Lead Capture”:
/almostasecret.php?id=shakedog
Despite what people have said in the past, there is still plenty of room for Empower Network to grow and these capture pages are still solid. Just keep in mind that there is the potential for 135K current members to be promoting this particular capture page, whereas only 8,000 are currently promoting the Big Idea Mastermind capture pages, and 270 members have access to the Join A Mentor pages (if you are interested in the story behind Join A Mentor that started in February 2013, click to opt-in and learn more.
On the same “Lead Capture” page as mentioned above, scroll down this page and click on the link to setup GR to work with the Almost Secret lead capture page.
The following page will ask you for your “Web Form ID.” To find this information, please scroll to the bottom of this page to the section labeled “GetResponse: Web Form ID.”
GetResponse: Join A Mentor
Just like Empower Network, Join A Mentor lets you integrate both AWeber and GetResponse, but since Big Idea Mastermind only supports GetResponse, if you have the choice, you should just go with GR.
If you are in Big Idea Mastermind already, Join A Mentor will give you a fresh way of promoting BIM via the new Google Hangouts feature. If you’re interested in joining JAM, click for my referral link.
If you are a member of JAM, login at and click on “Your Links.” You will see a section labeled “GetResponse Web Form ID.” Please scroll towards the bottom of this page to see the steps for locating this number in GR.
GetResponse: Big Idea Mastermind
Even though Big Idea Mastermind has a section that explains how to integrate GR with it, I’m going to explain it in my own words here to clarify any confusion. Currently, there are five BIM landing pages and you can integrate GetResponse with all of them, however you can only choose one GR campaign (list) to associate all of them with at a time.
Log into your Big Idea Mastermind account and go to “Business Center” and then “Autoresponder & Tracking Setup.” Your autoresponder provider will be GetResponse (there is no option for any other AR at this time). To get the API key you will need to head over to your GetResponse account and click on “My Account” and then “Account Details.”
Click on “Use GetResponse API” and copy and paste the API key onto the page in your BIM account. You will then be able to click on the drop down box for “Select Your Campaign.” Make sure you have separate campaigns setup for Big Idea Mastermind, Join A Mentor, and Empower Network. If you don’t, it will be difficult to figure out which pages your leads have opted into.
Now even though you may have followed my last blog post that explains how to disable double opt-in, GetResponse will not enable single-opt in (meaning your leads will still have to confirm their subscription to your campaign) due to the nature of the API key. Instead, you will still need to email bigideamastermind@support.com with your campaign name so they can disable double opt-in for you. You can also contact GetResponse directly and request that they put your campaign on single opt-in as well.
GetResponse: Web Form ID
Empower Network and Join A Mentor require you to use a web form ID in order to integrate GetResponse. Create one web form for each system. Doing this will allow you to track how many opt-ins you have received from Empower Network and Join A Mentor (or other systems that you might be promoting).
In GetResponse, click on “Web Forms” at the top and then “Create New.” Since both Empower Network and Join A Mentor only ask for an email address on their capture pages, you really don’t need to add or delete any fields (you will see the “Name” field is already included under the headline, but you don’t need to do anything about it.
Click on “Next Step” and give it a name (ex: Empower Network Leads). Leave everything else to their default settings, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “Show Advanced.”
In “subscribe to campaigns:,” make sure you have selected the proper campaign that your leads will be filed into. Do not mess this step up as it is very important that your leads be collected into the correct campaign.
Click on “Next Step” and in the “JavaScript” code area, you will see a six digit number. This is your web form ID. Copy and paste this number into the appropriate areas above to finalize the integration of GetResponse with Empower Network and/or Join A Mentor! If applicable, make sure you click save or submit.
Testing Your GetResponse Campaigns
It isn’t totally inconceivable that you may have made an error or two while you were setting this up. The best way to test to see if you got everything correct is to opt-in to your own landing pages. Test Empower’s Almost Secret page, test at least one of the Big Idea Mastermind landing pages (they are found under “Business Center” and then “My Landing Pages), and test one of the three Join A Mentor capture pages under “Your Links” then “Squeeze Links/Opt-In Pages.”
If you are using all three of these systems, then you should have three campaigns and two web forms (and not three because BIM uses the API key instead of the web form ID). If everything is setup correctly, you will be your own first lead to be added to your own campaigns!
