What do we do when dolphins attack? Well maybe we should stop dangling food over their habitat.

Feeding the dolphins at sea world can be an amazing experience and it was for 8 year old Jillian Thomas until the moment when one of the dolphins attacks. Now if you watch the video it is obvious the dolphin is not trying to eat the little girl but they are so used to the fish being dangled over their tank that the natural reaction is to go for it and unfortunately young Jillian Thomas’s hand was in the way.

Thankfully she did not suffer any permanent injuries and is healing well. She was even concerned that the dolphin may have some problems because it ate the paper fish holder.

When Dolphins Attack for food or play

My family and I lived in Florida for many years and we had many encounters with dolphins. When dolphins attack it is usually because they are attacking their food or they are being playful and don’t realize their own strength.

We must remember that these are wild animals and not house pets. It should come as no surprise that when we interact with them regularly there will be mishaps.

I have been at the beach, in the water and had a dolphin swim by me with in inches. It is a humbling thing to see a creature that big come that close to you in its own habitat.

I have also been at the tank where that young girl got bit and I had my young sons with me. I can tell you that the excitement level when you are standing there is pretty high and it is very easy for parents and children to get overly eager to feed these large dolphins. Let’s be careful out there. It is not a trivial thing when a child gets injured at a place that is supposed to be safe and fun for the whole family. We hope for her continued recovery and continued safety of those going to places like this.
