The Walmart Black Friday Strike continues to escalate

Recently I wrote a blog post about Walmart’s workers and how they were going to walk out on the retail giant on Black Friday.

Well now Walmart corporate has decided to fight back.

Walmart has filed a complaint with a federal agency regarding the organization of a union that is not directly tied to the Walmart workers union.

In its complaint Thursday, Wal-Mart said the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and its subsidiary known as OURWalmart is trying to force the store into collective bargaining even though it is not the official union for Wal-Mart’s employees. The UFCW represents over a million meat packers and food industry workers.  Read more here.

Therefore the complaint by corporate, during the Walmart black Friday strike, is that the UFCW is helping to organize the demonstrations that the workers are utilizing.

In what now looms for the large retailer is the largest shopping weekend of the year and one they could face shorthanded nationally.

The Walmart Black Friday Strike could bring repercussions to workers who participate

Walmart workers have been complaining about work conditions for years.

The fact that the strike would come on Black Friday is a shot across the bow of the Walmart corporate warship.

However, the Walmart Black Friday strike is not going to go unpunished.

If workers decide to partake in the strike, company officials are prepared to sanction them accordingly.

Wal-Mart spokesman David Tovar pointed out in a statement that the number of workers participating in the walkout is a “very small minority” of its 1.3 million workforce. Tovar said that Black Friday is like the “Superbowl” for retailers and that Wal-Mart is ready.

“If [the store employees] are scheduled to work, we expect them to show up and do their job. If they don’t, depending on the circumstances, there could be consequences,” said Tovar.  Read more here.

What those repercussions are yet is not clear.

It will be interesting to see if Walmart officials use the strike to terminate jobs.

One would think that company could take a massive PR hit in doing so.

What the Walmart Black Friday could mean long term

It will be interesting to see what the Walmart Black Friday strike could mean long term for the retail giant.

Social media outlets are starting to show significant support for the workers.

OURWalmart organizers say they have 1,000 events planned this week. Support for the campaign, which has been gaining momentum across social media platforms, is mounting: The organization’s Facebook page now has more than 28,000 ‘likes’ and its accompanying YouTube video has been watched over 103,000 times.  Read more here.

Walmart’s heavy handed management style may not fly much longer.

This weekend’s sales will be a telling tale about whether or not the public speaks with their wallets or not.

If the Walmart Black Friday strike hurts the company widely in the pocket book it remains to be seen how the retailer will react.

For a company constantly focused on the bottom line this will be the telling tale of what decisions they make moving forward
