New Study Shows that the Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke

I hate the word diet.

I prefer ‘lifestyle’ change.

Or healthy way of eating.

In fact, someone much wiser than me once said, that when faced with temptation for a food that was not on his “diet” he prefers to say to himself “I don’t eat that.”

It is a mindset shift.

If you keep telling yourself you “can’t have something” your brain automatically craves it.

But when you override your brain, and tell it that you don’t eat something, it shuts off that want.

At least in theory.

But I digress.

In a new study out this past Monday, the extended use of the Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan can greatly reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

The diet that consists primarily of fish, chicken, nuts, beans, fruits, and vegetables, helps control factors that lead to heart attack and stroke.

The findings, published on The New England Journal of Medicine’s Web site on Monday, were based on the first major clinical trial to measure the diet’s effect on heart risks. The magnitude of the diet’s benefits startled experts. The study ended early, after almost five years, because the results were so clear it was considered unethical to continue. Read more here.

People from Mediterranean countries have always had lower occurrences of heart disease, but that could have resulted from numerous factors other than diet.

Now researchers are more certain to declare the Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan is the most important factor.

One group in the study, assigned to the Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan:

….was given extra-virgin olive oil each week and was instructed to use at least 4 four tablespoons a day. The other group got a combination of walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts and was instructed to eat about an ounce of the mix each day. An ounce of walnuts, for example, is about a quarter cup — a generous handful. The mainstays of the diet consisted of at least three servings a day of fruits and at least two servings of vegetables. Participants were to eat fish at least three times a week and legumes, which include beans, peas and lentils, at least three times a week. They were to eat white meat instead of red, and, for those accustomed to drinking, to have at least seven glasses of wine a week with meals. Read more here.

Can the Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan be right for you?

Obviously the study above shows that this is a really healthy lifestyle.

And the reason I like it, is that you can actually eat good foods.

I have tried different diets and have continued to struggle with weight issues….

….but the programs I do the best on, are the ones where you can eat good foods, and don’t feel like you are being majorly restricted.

The Mediterranean Diet Meal Plan allows you to eat meat, such as fish and chicken.

You can eat all the fruits and vegetables you want, basically.

And if you like nuts and olive oil it might be for you.

Also you can drink wine on this diet.

Thumbs up!

Or bottoms up may be more appropriate.

Any healthy lifestyle, that allows you to drink a little, is alright in my book.
