How to talk about this man, how have fashioned his world ? Emerson is like many great men someone we know of without really knowing. What did he do that made him such a hero to the Americans. I guess it was who he was. He had an ideal and stood by this ideal his whole life. He respected life, hard work, equality and above all self-reliance. It is for his self-reliant advices that I came to spend some time reading and researching this man. What we sometimes forget is that he is from this world, he lived in a world and it shaped him as much as he shaped it.

More than a marginal, with his private transcendentalist group, he was someone who was on the edge to see clearly and in the trench to fight his fights. For instance one of his great battles was against slavery. He battled zealously not only against slavery but also against what slavery was turning white people into. For he saw that both sides were victims. One was the victim of harsh and cruel labor , the other was the victim of being less than they could be by depending on others. Yes self-reliance was very important for Emerson. One had to be self-reliant from outside forces, such as the European powers, but also from inside forces, such as dependence on family, friends etc.  To be self-reliant also means to be responsible, which translates into our own life as not blaming others for our own results. So my friends be like Emerson: “build therefore your own world”
