I have done it in the past of creating a website around an affiliate product. One drawback of this is it may be short-lived as many products are released every month. It is very possible that a product ends it run quickly. This may require a number of websites and may be hard to keep up to date some of the websites.
The other possibility is creating a website around a niche and promote many products in that niche. This can create a site that is easier to maintain and keep up to date as everything is in one place.
It is very possible to create a website around yourself. This would definitely be more of a blog-like website where you write about your interest and ideas. Then you pick affiliate products that are related to your interests or ideas.
No matter what direction you decide to take your website, it should contain affiliate links or links to your capture page. By providing links to your capture pages you can use the website to help you build your list, which is step two to start an internet business. You can also make sales while you are away doing other things.

As you start an internet business, you will need to decide if you want to make a static website or dynamic website. Basically, a static website is like a brochure. Normally, they do not change or can be difficult changing. This is normally what an traditional website would have been. In many ways, a basic capture page will most likely be a static website.
Dynamic website is one that can change very easily and updated often. A blog is a good example of a dynamic website. They tend to interact with social media very well like Facebook and Twitter.

There is also a great chance to get a visitor to return to your website. This is much more difficult with a static website.
