[12:20:12 AM] Marian Gurowicz: I need to get a blog posted before I go to bed.  I think I’ll write about this experience.  (sun)

I’m hoping by now that you are all wondering what was going on that would lead to this Skype conversations moments after the clock ticked into the new day.

We often talk about online marketing being about building relationships and not about selling a product or service.  That is what was going on.

Let’s roll the clock back to Thanksgiving evening.  TimTech and their partner sites were getting ready to kick-off a Black Friday through Cyber Monday sale.  That was the innocent start of what will remain in with most of us as a treasured memory.

TimTech sells advertising mostly through traffic exchanges.  The basic premise of the sale was a new deal every hour at unheard of prices.  Only one person knew the entire array of deals and the schedule in which they would appear.  While there really wasn’t a need to gather Traffic Exchange owners, technical support, splash page producers, bloggers, surfers, advertisers and a cast of others for the sale to be successful, it did sound like fun.

So as midnight drew near, Jon kicked off a Spreecast.  Shawn from the Spreecast technical team dropped in to see how we were doing.  What happened next might have been magic, it might have been the law of attraction at work, it may have been serendipity.  Someone asked Shawn if it would be possible to stream the entire 96 hours from Black Friday through Cyber Monday live.  The response was sure, but the longest any group had ever kept a live streamed on Spreecast prior to this was 48 hours.

There were some rules.  There always needed to be a live producer and we needed to be delivering content through out.  In other words, no camera focused on just an empty chair with a lot of attendees who were anywhere near their own computers.  Plus, the on screen people had to be doing something not just sleeping.

I guess we took it as a challenge because by the end of the first 48 hours the special of the hour had been fully integrated with:

  • A play-by-play live stream blog commentary
  • A trivia game or two,
  • The Friday TE Live conference,
  • An Inter-continental chicken nugget eating contest,
  • A Special Edition of Surfing Socially the Game,
  • Lot’s of non-business general chat,
  • Some business sharing of blogs, sites, as well as suggestions and commentary,
  • An on screen Call of Duty game,
  • Jokes, and more.

People took turns on screen not because they had to but because they wanted to.  We worked around each others schedules and helped when we could.  It was an international event with people from Australia, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and from the east coasts to the west of Canada, USA, and South America.  And when hour 49 rolled around we did a happy dance and Bill presented us with a badge that he had created especially to celebrate breaking the old Spreecast record.

A collective deep breath as we questioned our intent and determined whether just breaking the old record was enough or we really wanted to hit that 96 hour mark.  As you might have guessed from the Skype transcript above, we kept going.

Sunday brought sports to the forefront including English Football (or soccer as we call it in the USA), NFL, and discussions of NASCAR (no major races this weekend).  The Sports Nerds made their regularly scheduled show part of this broadcast.

Then Brenda and I took the floor for a while with a topic that we are both passionate about, being involved with your children’s education and advocating as necessary with the school system to ensure that your child’s needs are being met.  The average school system (At least those I know of in the US) gears its programs toward middle of the road students and can easily lose sight of the gifted and those with any challenges.  There were also discussions of the Law of Attraction with Kevin bringing us examples from his work in this area and somewhere during the night an online golf game.

Hour 72 rolled past and we’d made it to Monday.  There were new faces added to the crowd, new stories to be shared, and views to be heard.

Regularly scheduled editions of TE Live and T3 were rolled into the ongoing Spreecast  as well as a very spirited debate of the age old question, PC or Mac?  I’m not sure there were any minds changed when the debate was done but we were certainly entertained by the two sides.

One of the highlights of the evening was a discussion that started with Justin and Patrick discussing their book series “Beyond the Quotes” and morphed into a lesson on business leadership that went beyond the books.  This is definitely a few hours that can be captured from the Spreecast video and turned into a seminar all on its own.

Some other major events that happened over the weekend, included Janelle’s baby standing up for the first time, Brenda and her husband celebrating their 45th wedding anniversary and the memorable story of their night out, and Justin buying his wife a beautiful bouquet.

Somewhere along the line, I committed to getting my mailing list capture form embedded into the sidebar of this blog so that I can send out regular reminders for my Wednesday night Spreecast, Living Wealthy with Marian Gurowicz.  You can all hold me to that one.

The grand Black Friday through Cyber Monday sale that started it all?  It continued right through the entire Spreecast like clock work with various people stepping up to record the deal, make sure everyone in the room was aware of the new deal, get the word out to the participating TEs and Skype rooms.  I took advantage of quite a few of the specials myself as did many other people.

Before we knew it, we’d made it to 96 hours.  We will have stories to tell for years to come that start with, “Remember that crazy weekend we set out to to shatter the Spreecast record. . .”
