Identify your Niche

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

It is often recommended that when you get started in marketing you should identify your niche and then find the product you would like to sell to that particular group of people.

But let’s face it. That’s just not everyone’s reality.

In my experience, most people have a product first. They love it, they use it and they want to share it.

An excellent way to share that product is by blogging. We are huge advocates for blogging for business but, and we cannot say this emphatically enough…

When you begin blogging for business, before setting up your blog, deciding on your domain name or even getting started…Do yourself a very VERY big favor…

Identify your niche!

I’m going to say that again because I mean it!

Identify your niche!

The most asked question we see from new bloggers, hands down, and usually not until they’re at a frustrated, breaking point is:

“How do I know who to talk to and what to say?”

When you identify your niche, that is, when you’ve defined your relatively small, yet well defined segment of your market, you have the answer to that question.

So, how do you identify your niche?

The best piece of advice I ever received with regards to identifying a niche came in the form of a quote:

“Nobody who bought a drill actually wanted a drill. They wanted a hole. Therefore, if you want to sell drills, you should advertise information about making holes – NOT information about drills!” – Perry Marshall

In order to identify your niche, ask yourself these very important questions:

1) What is my passion?

If you are passionate about something, you will really be able to connect with others with similar interests on a very personal level.

2) What are you offering?

Do you have a product, a service, advice, or maybe all three?

3) How does your offer help others with similar interests to you, to reach their goals and/or enhance their lives?

In a nutshell, you must identify the WHO, WHAT and WHY of who it is you would like to speak with.

When you have the answer to these three questions, you will be able to easily identify your niche.

For example:

Dylan and I market 6 highly effective products.  Each product builds upon the other and all are designed to assist teach people how to become highly effective network marketers regardless of the end product.

However, there are so many potential network marketers out there, that we cannot possibly truly connect with everyone. For example, as two 30 something parents of small children, together for almost 20 years, one a stay at home soccer mom, 2 cars, 2 kids, 2 dogs, and a passion for all things outdoors; we’re not likely to really connect well with say….someone in their early 20′s with no kids and no pets who wants to be out partying every night.

That’s not to say our products would not benefit them, but in all likely hood, we’re way too boring and old for them to sit down and listen to us about anything!

On the other hand, get us in front of a group of  parents, who are sick of the rat race, tired of missing out on their own family because they spend all of their time at an office working to make someone else’s dreams come true, ready to be their own boss, make their own fortune and their own rules and do it from home…..we’ll we’ve been there, done it, are passionate about what we do, use the products our selves to achieve it and we speak each other’s language!

In short, almost everyone in our Niche has kids, has missed out on some really great school performance or other hallmark moments in their families lives that they’ll never be able to make up for, because they were at work, and has probably been to a Blues and Brews festival at least once in their lifetime and actually enjoyed the Blues as much as they enjoyed the Brews, and whether they know it or not, they’re ready to bust out of that employee mindset just like we were.

In short, when you blog for business, you are marketing your company, your product and yourself so it makes sense that you will make the most meaningful connections with the people you relate to the best.
