A Piece of My Mind

An Orange Marmalade Mom Moment

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Like many a stay at home Mom or Dad, I am the grocery shopper in the household. It’s my job to plan our meals, make the list and buy the stuff.

My family loves jam/jelly. But I really, just….well…don’t. With the exception of Orange Marmalade.

I like orange marmalade. Notice I did not say “love”…I said “like” as in, if we have it I will eat it, but I don’t go out of my way to buy it.

Whenever we go shopping I usually let whichever little helper I have with me, decide what kind of jam or jelly we buy.

Imagine my surprise about 2 months ago, when Sophie picked out..ta da!!! Orange marmalade. The one I do like. Not love. Like.

Turns out…

They hate it.

And I have heard all about how disgusting it is.

“EEEEWWWWEEEE!!!!! IT HAS ORANGE PEELS IN IT!”

Yeah. It does. I told you about that when you picked it out. You said you didn’t care.

“EEEEEEEEWWWW! IT’S SO GROOOOOOSSSSS! IT HAS WEIRD CHUNKIES IN IT!”

Yeah. It does. Those are orange peels. I’ve explained that.

“Mom. I would like orange mamalalade except for the disgusting orange peels”.

Okay, it’s the “disgusting” orange peels that make it MAR-ma-lade.

So, I let them pick out a different jelly. I think we’ve had grape and strawberry since we last bought the marmalade…

…and yet…

…everytime that dang fridge opens for jelly I hear a shrill little girl voice say.

“EEEEWWWW! We still have this?! I HATE orange peel jelly!”

And I think….of course we still have it! I’m the only one eating it and I have toast like, once a week. (is it bad to say “DUH” to your kids?)

So this morning as Dylan (not one of the kids) is eating his toast, NOT with Marmalade I might add…he says in a tone that suggests I somehow forced the marmalade on them all,

“Yeah, Babe? I think you’re the only one around here who likes the orange marmalade”

Face Palm.
