Consider Treating Hypertension Naturally

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

At least two million cases of high blood pressure are diagnosed each year, and about 25 percent of Americans suffer from hypertension.  As men and women grow older, the chances of developing high blood pressure increases and once it gets to a certain level, physicians prescribe medications to keep blood pressure at a safe rate.

Certain factors contribute to two types of hypertension: primary and secondary. Primary hypertension is when the blood pressure is elevated but there is no known cause. Some experts attribute genetics as the cause and others believe that nutrition and lack of exercise are contributors.  Secondary hypertension occurs usually from a side effect from various medications or a certain health condition.

Research does indicate that nutrition and lifestyles can have an effect on blood pressure.  New studies are being done all the time and report that a change in diet can lower blood pressure in many individuals.  In fact, vegetarians alone have a lower incidence of high blood pressure probably due to a healthier and less toxic diet.

The Archives of Internal Medicine published the results of a study of those who had high blood pressure. The participants were split up into two groups. One group used olive oil in their diet and the other used sunflower oil. Those that used the olive oil (monounsaturated fat) experienced a drop in blood pressure and some of them did not need medication anymore or needed a lower dose.

Another finding via research is that omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil and flax seed oil reduce blood pressure. The eisosapentanoic acid (EPA) in omega-3 fatty acids dilates arteries, which causes a reduction in blood pressure.  It is recommended that anyone suffering from hypertension take omega-3 fatty acid supplements as a treatment for hypertension.

Taurine has been known to reduce blood pressure as well. Taurine is a sulfer-containing amino acid that has been found to lower systolic blood pressure by about 9 mm Hg and diastolic pressure 4 mm Hg.  Amino acids in general are good for the health.

Herbs to lower blood pressure

Botanical therapies also provide benefits for those with treating hypertension naturally.  Arjuna Bark, which is found in India, has been used for many years in Ayurvedic medicine.  It is known to lower systolic blood pressure and has zero harsh side effects.

Yarrow is another medicinal plant that has been found to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.  Yarrow is a flower that is found in Asia and Europe and is not known to have any side effects.

If you suffer from hypertension and are seeking alternative, natural ways to treat it, begin researching the topic and see a physician that specializes in alternative medicine.  It is wise to always consult with a professional before substituting or reducing prescribed medications for treating Hypertension

So I hope you will consider treating hypertension naturally
