The Croods! A Movie Review

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

The worlds first prehistoric family, The Croods, is an animated comedy about the journey of a lifetime!

The CroodsMy girlfriend happened to pick up some free tickets to a pre-screening of the upcoming release of 20th Century Fox’ and Dreamworks Animation ‘The Croods‘, which we went to on Saturday morning. After waiting outside for 45 minutes in the cold for the theatre to let us in and then going through some technical difficulties and a theatre room change the movie finally started. This particular screening was in 3D and in hindsight, I am so glad it was because it is such an all over the place, fast moving, looking at things from all angles all the time type of movie so the 3D aspect, for me, made it even more entertaining and engaging.

The Croods Guy and BeltThe story begins with a family hunting session, hunting meaning trying to steal a giant egg from its unsuspecting gigantic bird like mother, The Croods each have a part to play and play those parts they do! Nicolas Cage lends his voice to Grug, the father, whose sole purpose in life is to protect his family and keep them alive and he does so by keeping them in a state of fear about trying anything new or venturing beyond what they know and keeping them confined to a cave most of the time. Emma Stone plays Eep, the restless, impatient, questioning and rebellious daughter who just wants to be in the light and have The Croods Eepsome fun! Ryan Reynolds plays Guy, a nomadic young caveman who stumbles upon The Croods and although he is not as strong physically as they he has a very active mind and lots of ideas which The Croods are not at all used to and which causes all sorts of mayhem throughout the movie. Guy has a sloth for a pet which acts as a belt to hold his trousers up, hence his name, Belt. The rest of The Croods family is made up of Mom (Catherine Keener), Thunk (younger brother to Eep), Sandy (baby sister to thunk and Eep) and Gran (Cloris Leechman and mother in law to Grug) and they all play integral parts in this hilarious account of the familys journey to find a new home after an earthquake destroys their cave.

The Croods Animals
There are a multitude of weird and wonderful animals, crustaceans, birds and plant life that The Croods encounter on their journey that make the movie an absolute delight to watch and the steady pace of it keeps you riveted to your seat. I laughed continuously through the movie, even laughed till I cried on a couple of occasions so I have no problem at all in recommending this movie to anyone. It is light hearted and just plain fun and even the potential scary parts are not scary at all, such is the skill of the directors (Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco). The Croods is a movie which will have a place in my collection of movies to be watched again and again!
