How Do You Create a YouTube Video?

How do you create a YouTube video? Let me tell you how I create my YouTube videos using this free, easy to use tool. Then you can decide if you want to use the same process that I use because the reality is, there are multiple ways and multiple tools out there to create videos for YouTube. I’m also going to share with you the free tool that I use to compress and re-size my videos to make them smaller without losing noticeable quality, and how to eliminate any black boxes (wasted black space) around your YouTube videos.
YouTube Capture is a great, free app. that you can download to your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and iPad mini. At the time of this writing it looks like it isn’t available for any other device. However, if you have one of those Apple products that I just mentioned YouTube Capture is the easiest way I’ve found to create videos and get them up on YouTube easily, and quickly.
I use YouTube Capture on my iPhone and create my videos that way. You can tie in your YouTube, Google+, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. You can set it up so the video is uploaded privately if you’d prefer. That’s actually what I do when I initially upload it to YouTube because I like to add in a description and keywords first. Currently, you can only give your video a title before uploading it using YouTube Capture.
The cool thing though, is that I can shoot a video and upload it straight to my YouTube account for everyone to see as long as I have my iPhone with me. The app. has some simple settings, nothing too fancy though. I’ve got mine set to the following settings for my iPhone:
Landscape lock: ON (I can only record when my iPhone is horizontal)
Rotate to begin recording: OFF (I keep this off because I’d rather press the record button)
Quality: 1080p (best quality, but slowest upload; 720p and 360p are your other options)
Only upload on Wi-Fi: Usually ON (I change this one depending on where I’m at, but if you don’t want it uploading any videos on your 3G or 4G connection then you’ll want to turn this on.)
Color correction: ON
Stabilize: ON
That’s the only settings I mess with. You can also trim the video and add some default YouTube soundtracks if you want.
I Like YouTube Capture, but It isn’t Perfect
Here are a couple of flaws that I’ve ran into while using this app. It will randomly lock-up, however, it has never locked up on me while I was actually shooting a video. It likes to lock-up after reviewing a video and hitting the back button to record another video. It’s easy to fix, just completely shut the app. down and restart it.
Your video recording can be interrupted. One day I let my battery get low while I was recording a video and the 20% warning for a low battery window popped up right in the middle of my recording, and this closed the YouTube Capture app. which caused the recording to stop. So, just keep that in mind. I’m not sure if other things can interrupt it, such as phone calls because I haven’t had that happen yet.
When you upload your videos to YouTube with this app. your videos will have wasted black space on each side of the video. These black boxes will sometimes “dance” if you had the stabilize option turned on when you shot your video while holding your iPhone. To prevent the “dancing” just don’t hold your iPhone, set it down on something sturdy while recording your video; or have a really steady hand.
Your second option, and how to eliminate these black boxes, is by using Handbrake!
Handbrake – My Black Box Solution
I initially downloaded Handbrake to compress my larger videos. It does a great job at doing this while retaining the quality of the video. However, Handbrake also has a cropping feature that can be set to automatic or manual. I’ve used it with my videos that I’ve created using YouTube Capture, and discovered that by just leaving this cropping feature set to automatic it will remove those black boxes (that wasted black space) for me.
Quick Overview on Using YouTube Capture and Handbrake Together
After creating and uploading my video to YouTube using YouTube Capture, I turn around and download the video from YouTube to my computer. This is going to give me a 1280×720 video. Once the video is on my computer I load it up into Handbrake. I make a few tweaks to it (see video above), but I leave the video dimension alone and make sure automatic cropping is selected. I run the video through Handbrake. I then re-upload this newly formatted video to YouTube.
That’s just what I do if I want to remove the black boxes from around the video. Otherwise, I just create my video using YouTube Capture, upload it, add a description and some keywords, and that’s it.
