Which is the best Video Marketing platform:

Facebook or YouTube?

If you’re somewhat new to online marketing, this may seem like a ridiculous question. The obvious answer would be YouTube… right?

Usually, I would say the same… hands down, YouTube.  After all, YouTube is a video based search engine, and Facebook is a social media site.  Well, before you give your “final answer” you may want to consider these points.

  1. What makes Facebook a great Video Marketing site

To give you some insight about Facebook as a video marketing site, I’ll have to give you a little back story.

First and foremost, Facebook is a social site, but it is quickly becoming a powerful search engine as well. When you search for a person, or page or whatever using the Facebook search bar, it will also search the internet for information matching your search. So it’s possible for someone searching for something… to find it outside of Facebook.

Let’s not forget that although you can find things on the internet by using a Facebook search, that’s not why people are on Facebook.  Actually, people spend the majority of their time surfing their “newsfeed”, not searching for information like they would on Google.  So if you post a video on Facebook, the most likely way for them to see it is on their newsfeed. Notice I said “see it” and not “find it”. I say that because the person surfing on their newsfeed is not “looking” for anything in particular. Right?

Therefore, from an advertisers perspective, Facebook could be considered an Interruption Marketing platform. If you pay to promote your post, or video on Facebook, it won’t be found… instead, Facebook will simply put it in front of them on their newsfeed.

Here’s why this is so beneficial. Facebook knows everything about everybody on their site. They know who you are, what you’re education level is, where you work, where you vacation, and even how often you post about certain “interests”. They know what you “like” and what you are most likely to engage with on the site. They know how many times you have clicked or commented, and also what interest category those clicks and comments are related to. THEY KNOW EVERYTHING!

So, if you advertise on Facebook, all of this info is at your fingertips. You can laser target your ads to only show up in front of the exact person you’re targeting. Make sense? This is powerful.

Facebook is also favoring Videos over all other types of posts. If you choose to use Facebook as a Paid Marketing Strategy, you can embed your URL right in the video automatically. When your viewer clicks it, they will forward your targeted viewers to your Website.

Here’s a link to my Facebook Page that I use for hosting my ads.

  2. What makes YouTube a great Video Marketing site?

As you should know, YouTube is now the 2nd largest Search Engine on the Web… right behind Google. You should also know, that Google now owns YouTube so they are working hard to complement each other to give their customers the best search results possible.

YouTube has been the leading Video Hosting site for many years, but in this post, I’m going to share why they are a great Video Marketing site. When you read this, you should refer back to my description of Facebook and decide which site might work best for you.

When you post videos on YouTube for whatever purpose, you need to understand how you can get the most people viewing them. The best way to get your videos in front of your target audience is by targeting Keywords.

By targeting Keywords, you can help your target viewer “find” you. When they type in the keywords that you’ve effectively identified, they should find your video.  Paying for YouTube PPC ads is no different, you simply tell YouTube what Keywords you want them to target, and they place your videos at the top of the search results.  In other words, YouTube will not put your videos in front of people unless they are actually searching for a keyword that is relevant to your video.  In this case, they actually know nothing about the actual person doing the searching.  Very different than Facebook, right?

Here’s my YouTube Channel, where I post my videos

Facebook or YouTube:  Which is the best Video Marketing strategy for you?

So it’s like this: If you want to target a specific audience, maybe you should consider using Facebook as your Video Marketing site of choice.

However, if you are choosing to target Keywords that your target audience may be searching for, then maybe YouTube is the best for you.

I’d ask that you also consider this: YouTube is a response marketing strategy designed to give someone exactly what they want, when they want is. Facebook is an interruption marketing strategy that delivers your interest targeted content right in front of the noses of the people most likely to have interest in it. Trust me, even though they aren’t necessarily looking or searching for your content, they are often so surprised to see something that so perfectly matches exactly what they like. I don’t know about you, but if I just finished reading a book titled XYZ, and an ad popped up on my newsfeed saying “what did you think of XYZ book?”  I might be inclined to “click”.

What about you?  How has your opinion about Video Marketing changed?

  1. I totally agree. My advice is always to pick a marketing strategy, and stick with it until you master it. In the end, I see no reason you couldn’t easily do BOTH! You’re awesome, thanks for your feedback!

  2. Thank you Sivilay! We all learn from each other. Now it’s your turn to implement what you learned and then TEACH it to your team.

  3. I don’t use Facebook video as much as I know I should. That’s a great point about pattern interrupt though. It’s so true, how many times has this happened to me personally. I just now recently started paying attention to WHY I stopped and looked. What caught my attention.

  4. Hey Craig! I’ve been a YouTube’r for years. For me, Facebook videos have always been for fun, and not as much for business. Facebook continues to evolve… and it’s working in our favor. Keep me posted on your progress!
