Something Worth Doing

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

Now you all know I love to read and find all kinds of books.  A few years I read a book called You Can Farm by Joel Salatin.  I live in the country and so that makes sense right.  I loved it and it made a lot of sense.  So I try and catch all that I can from him when I can. He has a great message and he knows what he is doing when it comes to farming.

By Joel Salatin

So today I was looking through my social feeds and I saw an interview with Dr. Merecola and Joel Salatin so I took the time to watch it.  It was about 25 minutes long.  It was awesome and I loved it.  He talked about business models of farming and that could be also put into blogging as well.  But anyway Joel said something made a heck of a lot of sense and really wanted to talk about it here.

So Joel was talking about how one of the things that hold us back from doing what we should be doing the old saying, “Something worth doing is something worth doing right.”  But when it comes to starting something and learning how to do something this is not the case.  Joel said, “If something is worth doing, then it is worth doing poorly first.”

Let that really sink in.  So many people never start something because they are so hung up on doing it right and perfect.  So they are start doing all this studying and the try and set up a few things, but then they get overwhelmed with all the information that they have gotten on how to do this thing they are studying.  They have so many different forms of information and half of it is conflicting.  No wonder you are overwhelmed.

So what tends to happen after all this is you might half start something but all the info makes you feel like you will never get it and so you quit before you ever even really get started.  And well that pretty much leaves you where you were to begin with except maybe a little more frustrated than you were before.

I know what that feeling is like and I have had those moments where I have let fear and overwhelm take over and I have quit.  Yes I have been a quitter before.  But I tell you one thing you get from quitting and that is the really icky feeling after realizing you never really tried.  No I am not saying if you do something really put forth effort and then find that thing is not for you, you should feel bad about that.  That is a life lesson and is in a totally different category.

No I am talking about starting something feeling overwhelmed and just saying, “Oh well I tried.” Yet you never really did put forth much effort and you did not stick with just one strategy and get it right, but trying doing to many things at once.  You are the one that needs to hear this.

So what is it that is worth doing?  I do not know this is only something that you can answer.  But the point is that if it is worth doing well it is worth doing poorly to start with, because it means that you have started.  That does not mean overwhelm yourself with a ton of information and bang at it from a hundred different angles.  If that is where you are at stop right now and pick on dang strategy and work from that point.

Get past you own hang ups.  Get past your thoughts of not being enough or this is too hard.  Just start doing and you will find what works for you.  “So something worth doing is something worth doing poorly at first.” ~ Joel Salatin.  What a brilliant thought.
