10 Tips to Perform Your Best While Running in the Rain
Whether you are preparing for a marathon or are simply looking for ways to improve your morning run, don’t let rain ruin your run! Running is a sport of endurance. Marathon runners and leisurely runners alike are sure to face a rainy day at some point in their lives. Here are ten tips for running in the rain to help improve your endurance and build your confidence as a runner.

- The faster you befriend the rain, the faster you will run!
- Let rain be the motivation for increasing your speed. It is definitely unpleasant, but use it to push you.
- Avoid uncomfortable chaffing by applying A & D ointment or Vaseline to areas where you typically chafe, as well as between your toes.
- Keep the rain off your face by wearing a visor or a hat with a brim.
- Wear breathable clothing and multiple, light layers that are easy to remove while running. Use merino wool for the layer closest to your body as it will keep you warm and help to avoid illness or hypothermia.
- Be cautious of puddles! Running through them puts you at risk for hitting an unexpected pothole. Your best option may be to run around them.
- If you are running a race, place your car in a nearby location where you can switch out your wet clothing or shoes. Remember to grab a towel before you leave home.
- Your feet will most likely be soaked! I find compression socks help to keep them as comfortable as possible.
- Waterproof windbreakers or ponchos serve best to catch some of the rain and keep you dry.

These tips may work better from some, but generally help all runners bear the rain. Don’t let a rainy forecast discourage you. Running in the rain may be the key to giving you a breakthrough in your running career. Whether it is an unexpected downpour or a light mist, don’t let rain ruin your run! Running in the rain will improve your stamina, speed, and mentality as an athlete. Conditioned athletes would agree that practicing and performing in difficult weather conditions improves their ability to compete. Running in the rain for practice will indefinitely help you perform if you are running a race. If you run for fun, let the next rainy day be an opportunity for improvement.
