Have you ever realized that your life might not be in balance?
I admit and know that I don’t have balance in my life at this time.
I am a single mom of a 10-year-old child, working from home building a business online and caring for an elderly parent. I’m also quite active in my church and manage my entire household alone which happens to be a 1/2 acre lot with 2000 square feet of house to clean, 2 cats and 2 dogs.
Here’s the truth….right now, something has to give…..and it’s usually the house work…..just sayin!
When launching a business or taking on anything new, is it possible to have a life of balance?
Honestly…I don’t think so. I believe if you dedicate yourself to your goal like it’s a life or death mission, you will be a little out of balance but it can be temporary.
To me…balance equals being content with things the way they are.
In the last week this subject has been on my mind quite a bit. It started after a chat I had with a guy I just met and he asked me a simple question…..
…………..”what do you do for fun?”
wow….I imagine I might have had either a deer in the headlight look, or a blank look….
How do you tell someone…gee…I don’t have any fun, I’m all business! lol
Check out this short video where I talk about my unbalanced life and why it might be unbalanced and how I feel about that!
Instead of being upset about the obvious lack of balance in my life, I choose to focus on what I’m working towards because I know that once I achieve my goals, I will create the balance I need.
In my opinion, working towards your goals means giving up some other things temporarily knowing that things will go back to some kind of balance eventually. I’m really ok with my house being messy (well until a friend comes over and I’m embarrassed)
Here’s a personal example of my experience with this subject of Life Balance:
No Balance When Becoming a Police Officer:
In 1998 I decided to test for the Las Vegas Police Academy and become a Police Officer. At that time, I had been a dispatcher sitting in a chair for 10 years and I was not, nor had I ever been, a very athletic person and the reality hit me that I had some work in front of me to just even prepare for the testing process, never mind the actual job itself. Needless to say, I spent a few months training by running, doing push ups situps etc and that was just to pass the physical test to even begin the process.
Once I got through the initial testing and was accepted (months later), I then began the Police Academy and that’s when the lack of balance in my life really happened.
I was a single mom of a 7-year-old boy at the time, trying to juggle being a mom with going through the police academy. My mornings started early and my nights ended late from all of the work, homework, and preparation required to get through each day. I had to study my materials, I had to shine my boots, clean my gun, and be prepared for daily inspections and still physically train to maintain, all while handling all the needs of a small boy in school, myself and my household.
6 months later I graduated the police academy and then had at least 6 more months of field training to get through. More studying, more boot shining, more training and on the job performing for my Field Training Officer, being evaluated daily with the goal of making it! Couple that with shift work and you might start to see how my life was way out of balance. My life WAS police work and everything else evolved around it for a while.
Here’s my point…..the police academy took up all of my life and time but I was working towards a good goal that required all of my effort and focus for a short amount of time. I knew it wasn’t going to be that way forever. It was pretty drastic though – People I had known on the police department for 10 years already thought I had left because I was out of circulation and nowhere to be seen
Good news is, once I got the job made it and through my evaluation and probation, I was able to create more balance in my life. At least as much as humanly possible when you work in Law Enforcement or shift work.
Could balance be a limiting belief?
Do we really need balance in our lives or could it be a limiting belief? Even though I was made aware of the need for more balance in my life this week, I realized (and said) that for the time being, I’m willing to sacrifice some things in order to achieve my goals. When working towards anything worthwhile, there is a need to focus in the beginning, For me that focus is not balance, I am choosing to focus on creating more income in my life allowing me to be, do, and have more and share that with others.
So for me, the balance in my life will just have to wait a bit longer!
