You want to have a fresh and organic garden. Congratulations on making the right decision. Below are a ton of wonderful tips to help you start an organic garden of your own.

Spacing is one of the primary considerations when planning an organic garden. You will most likely underestimate how much space plants will need as they grow. Space is necessary not only for physical growth but also to help keep air circulation flowing within your garden. Because of this, you should always take the time to ensure that there’s enough distance between all your seeds.

Keep the soil healthy by adding mulch. The mulch will protect the soil underneath it. It helps keep your soil cooler on warmer days, which protects the roots underneath. It helps the soil retain moisture longer by reducing the evaporation rate. Mulch is also great for controlling weed growth.

An organic garden doesn’t have to be restricted to a few types of plants. You can grow anything. A lot of acidic plants like mulch. These kinds of plants require a mulch consisting of a lot of pine needles during the fall each year. When the needles begin to decompose, they then begin to deposit natural acid.

Using a soaker hose to water your organic garden is the best method. This will allow the water to seep slowly into the soil straight to the plant’s roots. These use much less water than the sprinklers and are less time-consuming than hand-watering your plants.

Companion Plants

Use companion plants within your garden. There are many kinds of plants that will help the plants near them to grow and thrive. The companion plants will repel pests, and help enrich the soil so that the use of fertilizers and pesticides are not necessary. Many aromatic herbs and flowers emit a strong natural odor that deters all types of common garden pests.

Allow your children to assist with the work to be done in your organic garden. Gardening is a great way for children to learn, and it gives you two a chance to spend some quality time together and produce healthy food.

Nobody likes to see weeds popping up in their beloved garden. This organic method of killing weeds is safer for both you and the environment.

Use untreated stone, brick or wood to build raised beds. If you are to use wood, you should make sure that the wood is not treated and is also naturally rot resistant. Cypress, locust and cedar usually work best. Take care to avoid wood that has been chemically treated when your garden will hold vegetables, since unknown substances in the wood can make their way into your future food. If the ground cover you’ve used already contained treated lumber, line it with a barrier of some form.

Apply equal portions of dried plant material and green into your compost pile. Your green material can be made up of produce waste, used floral arrangements, lawn cuttings, leaves, and other yard waste. Dried plant material consists of sawdust, shredded paper, cardboard, straw, and cut-up and dried wood material. Never put meat in your compost or even the waste from your family pets. These can harbor diseases that won’t be killed by the composting process.

Use six parts water with one part milk to spray the leaves of your garden plants regularly. This helps prevent mildew, which can cause your plants to die. You can store the mixture in the fridge for as long as three weeks. You can use this every day until there is no mildew.

Coffee Grounds

Add used coffee grounds to your garden soil. Coffee grounds add many nitrogenous nutrients to the soil that will benefit your plants. The more nitrogen you have in the soil, the greater the growth of your plants will be, so adding grounds or compost will ensure your plants grow large very quickly.

Pine is a mulch that is great. Some plants have a naturally high acidic level, and therefore like acidic soil. If that’s the case, the easiest thing to do is use pine needles for beds. Cover the beds with a couple inches of needles and as they decompose, they will disperse acid to the soil.

You may think that organic gardens are a new trend, though the truth is that they have always been in existence. Native Americans helped the European settlers plant successful crops by placing a fish together with seeds in the soil. A compost pile using leftover food and waste can provide the natural fertilizer for your garden. Compost not only helps your garden, but also helps the environment by reducing trash.

The healthier the soil the healthier your plants are, and when they are healthy they become that much more resistant to insects and disease. While you still have insects present, they won’t cause any damage. That way, everybody is happy.

Plant twice- three weeks after planting tomatoes in the organic garden, plant more seeds. This staggers your harvest over time. Additionally, if weather or something else ruins one harvest, you still get a second chance to get a good tomato crop.

You should now have the basic knowledge you need to start an organic garden. Even if you already felt pretty prepared, the advice you’ve read should make you feel like an expert. The tips above should have given you some advice and a few ideas, so that you can begin an organic gardening adventure in your own backyard

Companion plants will help reduce your gardening chores. A lot of plants will help their neighboring plants when they are paired together. These companion plants repel pests and enrich the soil, and helps to avoid the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Plants that have a strong odor can drive insects away from the other plants in your garden.
