A lot of people are becoming more aware of the chemicals that are put in our everyday produce and how this can harm them, this is why they decide to grow organically. Additionally, most organic gardening techniques cost very little money. Here are some suggestions on helping you to become a organic gardening professional.
When you are growing organic plants within the home or an enclosed area, considering how much light the plants will receive must be emphasized. Ideally, these plants should be kept in a room that offers natural light from a window or glass door. You can also get special lamps if you want a different kind of plants.
When you are preparing fresh vegetables for meals, take a few minutes after dinner to chop the excess pieces finely and add them to your garden. These veggies decay quickly, which then leech vital nutrients into your new plants that are growing. You may of course still choose to use some of these leftover vegetables for composting, but making immediate use of them is also beneficial.
If you’d like to create a raised bed, use materials like brick, stone, or untreated wood. When selecting wood, make certain you pick untreated products that have a natural resistance to rot. Cypress, cedar or locust wood are appropriate selections. In a veggie garden, don’t use treated wood since its chemicals can leech into the food crops and soil. Treated wood can be lined with plastic to create a barrier.
For perennials, you can quickly get a plot developed in a short amount of time. Use a spade to slice beneath the turf and flip it. Next, the area should be buried in a three- to four-inch layer of wood chips. Let this set for a few weeks before you plant your perennials.
Flower Beds
Use about two to three inches of organic material as mulch in all of your flower beds. A thick layer of mulch will prevent weeds, reduce watering needs and fertilize your garden. It will also make your flower beds look more finished.
Use a beer trap to capture slugs and stop them from eating your plants. Dig a hole the size of a glass jar, and bury the jar with the top at ground level. Fill the jar with beer to an inch below the jar’s top. The scent of the beer will bait the slugs into the jar and they will become trapped.
When planting seeds in containers, remember that the depth should be at least three times bigger than the seed. However, you should always know that some seeds cannot be covered, even the slightest bit, because they need to be in direct sunlight. Ageratum and petunias are two examples of seeds that should not be planted deeply. With so many different types of seeds, it is important that you check seed packaging or utilize other resources, such as the Internet, to discover which seeds require exposure to direct sunlight.
Though organic farming can present challenges that traditional farming with the use of chemicals does not, harvesting the crops is reward itself for the hard work. While chemical pesticides and fertilizers may claim to do great things for your garden, organic methods will give you the best crops possible.
Try to put an aspirin in the water to get rid of plant diseases. Dissolve one aspirin and a half for 2 gallons of water. The simple practice of spraying them with the mix will help them fight off diseases. The process can be repeated every three weeks or so.
You will garden more efficiently if you keep your tools close by. You can do this by using a bucket, or you can wear rugged pants or a gardening apron that has several pockets. Keep all of the tools you use and your gloves handy and will help you work more efficiently.
Working in the garden doesn’t have to be grueling; learn to work more efficiently. Don’t waste time searching for lost tools. Set up the tools you will need for your day prior to hitting the garden, then put them away neatly at the end of your gardening session. If you need to use a tool belt, try using some pants with pockets in them.
When you garden, be aware of what you can use. Try to use natural and organic alternatives rather than common chemical fertilizers. Using compost is a great example. Unlike inorganic fertilizers, compost fertilizers do not add toxic chemicals to the soil which could get in your water supply.
One great way to keep your plants healthy is to spray them with a mix of water and milk regularly. Use six parts water and one part milk. This mixture helps to prevent mildew from forming on the plants. You can store this in your fridge for about three weeks. You can use the spray mixture daily to get the mildew under control.
Transform your organic garden into a shade garden. These types of gardens are incredibly low maintenance, which many people will be relieved to hear. They will require much less watering, which saves a lot of work and time. Growth is sustained, but weeds will be less of a problem.
If you use this advice concerning organic gardening, you will have a healthier yard in no time. When your garden works with nature, you will also be able to notice an increase in the number of wildlife inhabiting your garden.
