Canine Training Tips You Can’t Afford To Ignore

Restored from the Empower Network archive (2011–2017), lightly edited to meet our current advertising standards. Views are the original author’s.

A playful new puppy can bring much joy into your household. However, without a plan in place, that joy will quickly morph into frustration. You may start to wonder why you bothered. However, you can get that initial joy back by properly training your dog. The article below will teach you how.

Primary Reinforcement

TIP! If your dog is a jumper, squeeze his paws when he jumps on you to let him know he cannot do this any longer. It’s uncomfortable, but not painful.

Use primary reinforcement to train your dog. Primary reinforcement uses the things that your dog loves as rewards for positive behavior. This can be a belly rub, a favorite toy or a tasty treat. This is how you teach your dog to be good to get what he wants.

An older dog can learn new things, but you need to be aware of health issues that might cause his ability to be somewhat limited with certain things. For instance, if your dog is experiencing arthritis, making it crawl long distances is not very practical. Training could help a dog stimulate its cognitive functions, which is very beneficial when it comes to older dogs. Your first concern needs to be for your pet’s health, though. You don’t want to subject your dog to unnecessary pain or discomfort.

If your dog has been behaving badly for years, it will be hard to get rid of this behavior for good. If a dog’s previous owner or you have allowed a dog to sleep on furniture or jump on people for many years, it will take time to change that long term behavior. Getting your dog to behave in a certain way is easier if you reinforce this behavior while your dog is still a puppy.

TIP! Ensure you frequently put your dog in social environments at an early age. Your dog must learn how to behave in the company of other dogs as well as humans.

To train a dog to have good manners, training must be deliberate and consistent Perfection doesn’t come overnight. Unless you are willing to practice your skills, you are unlikely to be successful at anything! The same holds true for training your dog.

To teach your pooch the “sit” command, approach him with a treat while he is standing. Then you should keep their attention on the treat as you move your hand towards their rear side. It will make the dog look up to watch your hand. When dogs look up, they usually sit.

When training your dog, it is important to have everyone in the family get involved so that the training is consistent. All family members should be on the same page when it comes to training, and it is imperative that everyone uses the same command words. Consistency is crucial to puppy training.

TIP! Do the proper research to determine whether your dog’s breed fits in your training routine. Certain breeds of dogs have the tendency to forget new things, or they are stubborn, so more training time may be required.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. Praise your dog when he deserves it, and give him treats to show that you are pleased. Never punish your dog with words or your hands. This is ineffective and will just convince your dog that you don’t know what you are doing. Firmness, positivity and consistency are the keys to solid puppy training.

Deal with boredom barking. You are at fault if your dog has been barking because of boredom. You have to give him the opportunity to get his energy out. Spend some time walking him and playing with him. If you can’t be home, give him something to do while you’re gone, like leaving him toys.

The best training program is one that combines tasty treats with dedication and pure affection. Through the tips you have read here, you can move forward with positive training that will create a lasting relationship with your dog. Your dog won’t be trained overnight, but with patience and persistence, you will have a trained dog before you know it.
