The Death of Stephen Covey
Stephen Covey, author of the tremendously successful best-seller, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, died Monday morning (July 16, 2012) at an Idaho hospital. The death of Stephen Covey was the result of injuries sustained in a bike accident back in April.
Stephen was 79.
Covey was the founder of a Salt Lake City-based business that evolved into FranklinCovey, a multimillion-dollar corporate consulting, training and publication enterprise, according to the firm’s website.
After his amazing success with “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, Covey went on to write several other bestsellers about business management, including “Principle-Centered Leadership”. He soon became a favorite motivational speaker on the Fortune 100 circuit and was named one of the world’s top 50 business thinkers in 2011 by Thinkers50, a group that compiles that list every other year.
In his final hours, Covey was surrounded by his adoring wife and children, and all of their spouses, who sang him his favorite songs, just as he requested.
The Death of Stephen Covey – His Legacy Remembered
Here’s one of my favorite videos of Stephen Covey – on “Choosing Success”:
The Death of Stephen Covey – a Time to Celebrate
I don’t think the death of Stephen Covey is a time to mourn. Rather, it’s a time to reflect on a life lead to the fullest. A life dedicated to empowering individuals to reach their fullest potential.
Whether one read his books or heard him speak in person, Covey will always be remembered, not just for his words, but for the powerful way in which he shared them. He’ll be remembered for his integrity. In a world sorely lacking in principle-centered leadership, Covey was one of the pioneers of bringing honesty and principles back to leadership.
Indeed for me, the biggest take-away from the death of Stephen Covey is to live a life on purpose, with a vision bigger than one’s self, and dedicated to inspiring others to rise above mediocrity… to escape the “gravity of average”.
With much respect to his family, I’m not sad about the death of Stephen Covey. He lived his life. He lifted others up along the way and left the world a better place, and is now heading to a better place. If only everyone would rise up and live their lives with the same passion, mindset and purpose, what an incredible world this could be…!
Make it count,
P.S. Stephen Covey was all about empowering individuals to live their lives to the fullest, to live life on their terms… not the other way around.
That’s what I love about Empower Network… and I bet Mr. Covey would approve of what we’re doing. We’re fighting the forces of evil and helping people to overcome their “inner wussies” and paying out millions of dollars in commissions (Over in just 8+ months!)
