organic gardening

One of the best ways to improve your diet and make it healthier is to start and maintain an organic garden. Taking care of a garden does require effort in order to make things grow. You may be curious as to how to start the organic gardening process.

You should teach your children how to garden alongside you. The benefits for your children will be a closer bond with nature and an understanding of where food comes from.

If you’re working to build a sustainable organic garden, try leaving a portion of your garden untouched so that the wildlife will be able to thrive. Wildlife can help the plants in your garden to thrive, as insects support plant reproduction, while the excrement of many species contains nutrients which can help to fertilize your soil.

Keep your tools handy to work more efficiently. You can keep them in a good sized bucket, or wear utility pants that have plenty of large pockets. Keep your gloves, a trowel, small pruning shears and other tools handy and make quick work of your garden maintenance.

For your flower beds, organic material should be used as mulch. Two or three inches should be enough. Mulching helps to hold moisture in the soil, enhance the soil quality, and slow down the growth of weeds. Mulch also completes your garden, giving it a finished appearance.

Tuck away some plastic grocery bags and use them to slip over your muddy boots. This helps the flow keep going so that you can get into the garden quickly to finish what you’re doing.

Try not to let the chores associated to your organic garden build up. Even if you are too busy to tend to your gardens needs every day, you can try little things that will prevent you from having a lot of work when you return to your garden. Grab a handful of weeds, throw down some mulch, or toss some water on it anytime you walk by.

Use equal parts dried and green plant material for your own compost. Green plant mulches include everything from fresh grass clippings, to unwanted vegetables, to recently pulled weeds. Sawdust, straw, cardboard, paper and wood pulp are all examples of dried plant material. Don’t throw charcoal, meat or manure into your compost.

When you are growing seedlings in your organic garden, lightly brush over them using your hand up to twice a day. This sounds like total nonsense, but there is research suggesting that it does promote plant growth relative to unpetted plants.

If slugs are problematic in your garden, you can use an all-natural beer trap to do away with them. Take a glass jar and bury it in your garden, making sure that the lip of the jar is even with the soil. Fill that with beer just under an inch from the top of your jar. Slugs will be attracted by the beer and fall into the jar.

As should be obvious by now, organic gardening requires a bit of forethought and planning before implementation. So you can see these results, you must keep working with them. If you use the advice in this article, you will soon see great results from your organic garden.

To your success!!
