Blogging can be a powerful tool for your online business. You can use blogging to generate traffic, connect with your audience, provide value, and build trust and credibility in your online “brand”. But a common question that many people ask is “What blogging topics should I write about?”
Well, you can blog about almost anything… but if you’re intention is for your blog to actually make you money, the more relevant question is “What does my target audience actually care about?”
Spend some time and brainstorm about your ideal prospect– Get into their head! What do they WANT? What do they STRUGGLE with? What are their common PROBLEMS?
Being a marketer means solving problems. So the first big hint is to take the focus off you (and what you’re “going to say”), and shift it to what solutions you can provide to your audience. And if you think that to find good blogging topics means you have to give birth to those solutions entirely out of your own mind– let me save you A LOT of time and frustration right now.
One of the major trends that is shifting the landscape of information on the Internet, is called content curation. What’s that mean? Well, to sum it up– there is SO much information online, that people actually get lost, overwhelmed, and confused trying to find what they need in the whole mess. If you can insert yourself between your prospect and that endless ocean of information, and make that information more palatable, you are already providing them a great service.
For example, even if you have just a little more familiarity with a particular topic or solution than your prospect, you can do a little research of your own and compile that information in a more focused version, and then write about it on your blog. This is one simple form of curating content online. And by just doing that, you’ll not only find a lot of interesting topics to blog about, you’ll be solving real problems and demonstrating leadership in your niche.
OK, but what about specific topics to blog about?
One powerful content strategy that will work in ANY niche, is to provide specific “how to” information that offers a solution your audience would benefit from. You don’t have to write a whole manual on the subject… rather, just address one prominent challenge your target audience faces, and provide some useful suggestions.
Are there prominent companies that offer popular products or services in your niche? Consider writing a review of that company that provides your reader with some valuable insight about them. Likewise, you can individually review specific products, tools, and services that your prospects would benefit from. (Another great source of interesting and valuable topics.)
If you’re in network marketing, direct sales, or provide training or coaching of any kind in your niche–personal development is also a very relevant subject to your audience. Consider writing about mindset and productivity strategies that have benefited you.
Share your own experiences too… blogging can be a powerful way to connect with people and build a relationship, especially if you write a post that starts getting a lot of comments.
Want another excellent (and often overlooked) source of blogging topics? Take a look at your own bookshelf! Chances are you have a lot of books on subjects that are highly relevant to your target prospect. Browse chapter titles and, charts, and lists inside those books for quick ideas of powerful topics to blog about.
