How Important Is Imagination

Maybe you never heard this before, but Albert Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Have you ever given any consideration to this idea? If you have, you certainly wouldn’t be alone. Virtually everything that has ever been developed by mankind relied on this process.

Einstein didn’t end there either. He also said the following regarding imagination, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.” “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” And also “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”

Imagination cannot be strictly our starting point. You might awaken in the morning and begin using your imagination, but if by the end of the day, you have given up on yourself or simply ignored what you began the day with, you have surrendered to logic, perhaps with something as simple as “Oh well, that’s not gonna work.”

Amazingly enough however is the fact that while so many ideas begin with our imagination, they cannot be substantiated until they are employed to create a solution that can prove its existence. That’s why proof is defined somewhat differently in accord with legal settlements for business, crime and civil cases. You don’t want to leave out comedy either. So many of us have been taught to believe simply in logic, but that is a mindset based exclusively of what is in front of us, instrumentally or physically and yet even that produces challenges. Just this past week, they announced on the news that the Chinese have hacked our major military weapons, raising the possibility that they could be defused or worse yet become a risk to us. Apparently those hackers didn’t rely solely on logic.

So what alternatives have we? Whatever you choose to allow in your mind. If you choose to surrender to any challenge you are confronted with, then basically you’ve given up the process of developing a solution. If you allow yourself to expand and adapt your mind to new possibilities with respect to any and all challenges, you will benefit in ways you may never have dreamed of.
