Treat the search for work as a hobby and it will take exactly as long as a hobby takes. Dona M. Davis coached people through it, and her advice begins there: report at eight, break for lunch, finish at five, five days a week, because the search has become the job.

The interview material is the sharpest thing here. She takes apart the behavioural questions interviewers rehearse, the ones asking you to describe a time you showed leadership, and points out that they ignore how people genuinely decide about each other in the first few minutes. A companion piece covers recovering from an interview that went badly, and another lists what human resources will never say out loud.

She also asks you to think like a salesperson while job hunting, and to work out what kind of listener you are, which sounds soft until you notice how much of any interview consists of listening.

Read the interview posts before your next one. The rest of the blog moves on to other business entirely.
